Works for some crime, but socioeconomic status is clearly only the reason for a small amount of crime because there are a lot of poor people who have never committed a crime in their life. The socioeconomic status is either one factor among many or not a factor at all depending on the crime and individual.
It's a very complex issue involving many things, making a socially positive human is like getting a car running - taking out the spark plug will stop it ruining but that doesn't mean that fuel, air pump, etc aren't needed.
Economics isn't the only important factor but it's absolutely one of them.
Culture plays a part in it whether people like to admit it or not. When you glorify a life of crime it is of course going to influence people to commit crime.
There is no fence, just a field of problems and some people are only looking at a small section. Crimes of passion, crimes from jealousy, road rage, kleptomania, serial rapists, serial killers, religious extremism, do I really need to go one listing types of crimes that have nothing to do with how good the society is? Someone could have everything they need and the money to buy whatever they want, and still be arrested for shoplifting. Do you think someone as famous and rich as Bill Cosby really needed to drug women to get laid?
