People doing flash robs or most of the people shoplifting arent doing it because they're poor. They just want free shit and nobody is stopping them from doing it.

Rich people will still steal if theres no consequences.

You want teenagers to not do dumb crimes? Give them stuff to do.

This is a fixable problem

Not one that will disapear. There was never a time that kids didnt get into trouble

We can decrease crime by giving teenagers things to do.

Or we can respond to crime that already happened by arresting teenagers, increasing the likelihood that they will commit more crimes when they are freed

What are the things to do that arent already options? There are so many more options today then when i was a kid

Expand on that

Well, like there's so much more variety of sports options today than their use to be for instance. Like archery has really taken off in this region, some of the schools even have golf and cycling teams now. We have late night coffee shops, an ice rink with hockey teams, an arcade. Kids still hangout in parking lots like we always did on Saturday night.

From my perspective, kids will always fight when in groups, but by and large they are much better/nicer kids than when i was growing up

Lotta free archery clubs in high crime areas of US cities?

Their silence speaks volumes.

Okay, you're a teenager. You get $10 a week in allowance.

Now answer the question again but with a $40 monthly budget.

Movie ticket + popcorn 2x a month, then hang out at a friends house or empty parking lot

u/JustaSeedGuy 2d ago

Movie ticket is $15-$18 and popcorn runs $7-$15. So call it $25 per visit. One movie a month.

Empty parking lots are A) boring as shit, and B) might get you yelled at by the owner of the parking lot or a meddlesome passerby who decides you're up to no good.

Friend's house requires that the teens have families/homes that are suited to guests, and this isn't sustainable on a daily basis. It also doesn't solve the problem of getting out and having experiences in the world.

Also, all of the above requires transportation and parents won't always be available.

Basically, you're totally ignorant of every aspect of this. You think teens need less stimulation than they do, you think things are cheaper than they are, and you are actively choosing to ignore the steep decline in cheap or free third spaces and the rising societal suspicion of teens just hanging out in public.

Also, can't help but notice that none of that was your original suggestion of an archery club.

With all the things you knocked out, the minority of kids you're trying to talk about have literally no option. Sounds like they cant leave the house and cant have people over.

The problem with saying they need more to do is, WHAT? WHAT is this other thing you think they should do on a Saturday?

Good thing the premise of the post explicitly states that making crime disappear isn't an achievable goal and this is designed to improve things in a different way.
