Photography / Art Spent 5 days between Edinburgh and Glasgow
I’ve never really spent any time north of the border, but now I’m hooked! Looking to go further north next time so I’d welcome any suggestions for 4-5 days in the Highlands.

highlands is such a big area that it's hard to narrow down, but glencoe, skye, cairngorms (aviemore or ballater), and loch ness are all good shouts, but all a bit busy these days. really anywhere you go will be pretty. i would honestly recommend doing only 2 or maybe 3 places, gives you a bit more time to appreciate them.
towns like Callander, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy, Aberfoyle, are all touristy towns on the geographic border of the highlands that sell themselves as "gateway to the highlands", and once you've seen one you've seen them all. Not that interesting to me, but they might serve as a good base if you want to go hiking. Fort William or Tyndrum would also make good bases, and Oban is a nice town.

I took a 2 week trip to Scotland last year and have been wanting to move there ever since. The US feels so underwhelming.

Im confused, I live in the UK, I love Scotland, and also lived in the US. The US is enormous... how is it underwhelming? There are so many states with such a variety of landscapes... You have the west coast, with the rainforest in washington and oregon on the coast, Yellowstone national park, grand canyon, idaho hills, the redwoods, and sooo so sooo much more.

Underwhelming may not be the right word. And I don't mean just landscapes.
Public transportation is abysmal, and a train ride that is from major city to another is about $500 USD. And takes about a full day. Plane tickets are bad too. And while the US is huge, that's part of its downside in my opinion too. I can drive for 6 hours...and see nothing but the exact same thing and still be in the exact same state.
Just one example. I know that I may be in a "grass is always greener" situation. And I was only in Scotland for 2 weeks, so I probably didn't get a full picture. But if I had the chance today, I would still move there in a heartbeat.

I hear you. US has some major transportation issues for sure. Everywhere I've lived in the US tho, I was lucky enough to be able to drive an hour in any direction and be lost in the wilderness.

I'd give you a couple of weeks commuting to work in the darkness of a Scottish winter to change your mind.

Fuck I miss Scotland. Lived in Glasgow for 5 years. Some of those photos still feel like home….

I spent a week on the Isle of Mull, and it was wonderful, both for things to do and a peaceful vibe.

Good to see all the masts back on the tall ship. I went a couple of months ago and it only had one and looked a bit weird.

The ship, the Glenlee. My father corked the decks by hand in the late 90's. On his knees and well into his 60's, (IIRC) he had to hammer in lengths of rope between the deck planks and then tar them to make it watertight.
It wasn't long after the job was complete that he developed a little bit of skin cancer above his eyebrow (I think due to the sun/lack of sunscreen).
He had an operation to get it removed safely, but I accidentally burst his stitches when my rucksack clipped him as I was leaving the house; he was not a happy chap!

Could you share your itinerary? Im looking to spend a one week in Scotland around Edinburgh, but so far the only thing I planned is 3-4 night in Edinburgh, still unsure what to do for the rest. Thanks x

Between Edinburgh and Glasgow? That's longer than most would be willing to spend, in Falkirk. :D
