So stupid how that always happens. Man and a woman both with equal culpability. Woman gets a shorter sentence and paroled on first attempt and often early. Man rots. Now Iām not advocating for him to get her treatment rather her get his. Itās incredible how often this happens
What the heck, it says her sentence was 15 years. And that she was eligible for parole after serving 1/3 of her sentence (which would be 5 years). Except she served less than 3 and was paroled??
Seems the 15 year term included both prison and probation. The prison time portion of the sentence was just 6 years. She served 32 months then she went on parole until the end of the 6 years. Then another 9 years on probation.
The guns and threatening violence are the only reason thereās any prison at all if we are being real here.
While antisocial and distasteful thereās nothing inherently illegal about running around screaming slurs and waiving prejudice flags. Shoot thereās at least one nut on a street corner of my city who does that crap almost every week.
Some might think the sentence is too long for what occurred, but what those people fail to take into consideration is the lifetime of trauma and ptsd from this event, those children will end up reliving that for the rest of their lives.

I remember when this story first broke. Their excuse for the shotgun was something like "Well, you know, driving around town with a group of friends shouting racist harassment at complete strangers, you never know how people are gonna react. Some of them get really mad. So, you see, I need this shotgun to protect myself from them!"
It was sickening, absolutely awful! & the good ole boy system tried to sweep it all under the rug. It took 2.5 months for the killers to be arrested & charged and 4.5 years for the DA Jackie Johnson to have her obstruction charges dismissed by a judge.

As a gun owner, can confirm. I know other gun owners that really shouldn't have guns and will proudly tell you that they have guns because they can't don't like to fight but they will be the main ones starting shit and the first to pull their weapon.
Literally watched one of them start a fight with a guy, get his ass handed to him, and then went back to his car screaming for his wife to bring him his gun.
Cops were called, witnesses told the cop what happened and nothing happened to him. He still brags about it to this day, but of course he says that he beat the other guy up

I believe it's that last sentence that most people need to read. Everyone gets fixated on the years, but forget to check if the convicted become eligible for parole.
Most states in the United States they serve 65% of their time barring any violent crimes that are not eligible. And some states are 85% of the sentenced time served.

What they did was actually worse than just this birthday party incident. They had be riding around with other people in their "Respect the Flag" group for two days terrorizing people.
Agreed. Specifically the confederate leadership and slave drivers werenāt punished enough. The correct course of action would have been to punish them all the way.

Up to that point federal troops were in the south maintaining some level of peace. The protected poling places. Made sure ex slave owners gave reparations, and back wages to some former slaves. And in some cases intervene against the newly formed KKK.
Reconstruction was when America had its first black state and federal representatives. It was when the founding of a few black towns started happening. In some places where a few slave were receiving back pay, and reparations, they started to build futures. So Reconstruction was working.
But ex Confederates hated the north having a presence in the South. And northern sympathizes hated spending tax money to protect ex slaves. So Reconstruction was cut short, and once federal troops pulled out, all hell broke lose in the south. The KKK and other ex confederates insurgents went wild in a terror campaign against every black person, and any white allies they may have had.

Slave/land owners also, they were able to retain way more of their land they initially should have under Sherman's 40 acres and a mule rule which johnson rescinded when he took over. They basically got all their land back
Iām from Alabama. My school system was progressive compared to surrounding areas and any confederate regalia was banned on school property. Breaking this resulted in suspension and repeat offenders get expelled. My parents never played into confederate bs.
I went to college in Alabama also and the amount of students from the north that were pro confederacy and argued over the ārightā to fly the confederate flag was insane. I have always been vocal I donāt support it, and ended many arguments by saying I donāt respect Yankees who are pro confederacy.

It seems the sentence was weighted in the context that these people were also in a roving gang of trucks and other people who were all waving guns around and threatening the community at large.

That mom never should've forgiven them, imo. They traumatized her children, her family's children and her children's friends. This monster was released from prison 3 years early and neither the Court, nor the DAās office alerted the family that she threatened. The family only found out when one of them saw her out in public.
Itās also important to note that the convictions, and sentences of these racists were only possible because activists have fought for generations to bring justice to these people. Georgia doesnāt even have a hate crimes designation so this group had to be charged under a gang prevention bill because before attacking a kidās birthday party, they were roaming around Georgia threatening black people in cars.
