A lot of people in here on both sides of this debate are wrong. The EC wasn’t created to protect rural areas or small states. In 1789 90% of the electorate lived in rural areas. And the smaller states already had their compromise with the Connecticut compromise. Madison kept very thorough constitutional convention notes. The founding fathers wanted the EC because they thought the electorate was too stupid to pick the president (they also thought we were too stupid to pick our senators). That was the founding father’s justification.
That is the justification put forth in the Federalist Papers but the first time (in my lifetime) that some delegates said they would award votes differently than the popular vote the alleged voice of reason said that should never happen and moved to take measures so that the electoral college and popular vote would always be in lockstep. At that point I began to believe it should be done away with.
I personally believe our current president is a menace but that'll not why I think the system is trash. If you were a Rep. elector in and you thought he was wonderful then cast your votes accordingly, I have no problem with that. If you were an Rep. elector and you felt he was a menace but are now legally prohibited from casting your vote for someone else, then the system is fundamentally broken.
