Yep. My sister worked for a home design magazine and even they did that. They had stock photos of smooth, blemish-free underarms and knees and just whatever body parts that didn’t look the way they wanted in photos of people in the feature stories.
Yes I've have some experience of this as well. At points you just exchange the entire thing. Which always have disgusted me. I still think people don't fathom the amount of body dysmorphia this causes.
I have worked in production and shoots on major brands for over 15 years (given I’m on the motion side of things and not stills. But I work with the stills team as we have to share talent and coordinate on lighting). Every single shoot. Every one has retouching. It’s part of the pipeline. Given, I’m not going to weigh in on whether she was retouched because she definitely was. But what OP is pointing out may be compression creating that illusion. I’d have to see full res images. But knowing the pipeline there’s no way that ELLE let something so glaring slip though. There would be the Retoucher, the producer, an art director as well as the creative director all looking over this before the EIC does final approvals. Especially for a shoot of this calibre. These images would have many well trained eyes going over with a fine toothed comb.
It's so weird. Like I get the need to edit the shots and clean them up, adjust lighting or whatever. But I didn't even recognize her here. And she looks prettier normal.
I think the joke is that the photo on the right is so abhorrently bad (look at the gloves, the way that the photo makes her hands look huge, the appalling belt, the lighting) that she must have done something that made the photographer want to paint her in a bad light.
She did not. Thats physically impossible given her current film schedule and movie contracts strict prohibition of any procedures that alter appearance and fuck up visual continuity.
It’s lighting, professional makeup and professional photography/editing.
People need to stop immediately assuming a person has had work done.

She has toyed with fillers in the past, her lips ballooned at one point…idk why we are acting like actresses in their 30s and 40s aren’t getting work done at all whatsoever. It’s usually pretty subtle but it’s there.
It goes in and out of style for some reason. I remember times when magazine covers would all suddenly look airbrushed or eddited to the point of looking fake. Closer to cartoons than people. And the weird fad of adding an insane glow, to the point it was like they were sources of soft lighting 😂
I took the tweet to mean that these photos are so bad, that she must’ve “done something” to the photographer/photoshopped to make them treat her this way.
She did a video openly acknowledging her botox immediately following getting said botox (needle marks on her face and swelling). The joke is that we are asking when she's already answered. Petah out !!
I've seen all of those films. I don't recognize her. Without context, she's just a token, blonde, YT woman. So I read the "joke" of "did she do something" as, "why are you showing a picture of this random YT woman with no context".

Clearly, as a novel-writer with a high intellect (and the ability to hear really high frequencies, which isn't relevant but I am a narcissistic dog) my attempt to make a joke got a little too convoluted like a long-winded metaphor in my book, Faster Than The Speed Of Love.
