That's how she looked before fame btw.

Is this suppose to mean something?

u/Double-Truth1837 14h ago

I think how she’s gentrifying goth and alternative culture and fetishising herself playing into those “goth mommy” weirdos while not actually being a goth

u/BarryOakTree 13h ago

standard E-girl

this comment is so terminally online

Right? She's made a career for herself as a character, like so many musicians, actors, artists and other creatives before them. What is this gatekeeping shit? Oh she isn't authentic goth, she's only doing it for money, shame! Shame!

Because then dudes fetishise the rest of us who are actually part of alt culture, and we get harrassed for sex constantly. People like her just cosplay it because it gets dudes hard, and it impacts the rest of the culture by fucking with the messaging. Its kinda like conservatives pretending theyre punk, when theyre brown shirt, boot lickers.

i understand the sentiment, but goth girls have already been a pretty fetishized group well before this woman was doing much of anything.

best course of action if you dislike her is just straight up ignore her - same with people in real life that go out of their way to make you feel uncomfortable as well.

ultimately she's using an image to make herself money - not that different from so many other people out there, unfortunately.

I wouldn't even say gentrifying. She's just diluting the subculture for the sake of profit and fame. There's now a trend where all these E-girls who worship these subculture-tourist influencers decide to show up to goth events, drive out the regulars and demand their EDM and nightcore DJs get a spot instead of the regular nu-wave/post-punk/industrial music that our subculture is rooted in, based around and thrives off of. This subculture was thriving and strongly rooted until the fashion got used by influencers and streamers to generate donations and onlyfans money.

What does "not actually being a goth" mean 😂 brother it's clothes and makeup not a different species

u/EddieTheAxe 13h ago

So if I put on a cowboy hat, boots, and jeans I'm a cowboy? Sticking feathers up your ass doesn't make you a chicken.

GOTH ISNT A JOB

u/EddieTheAxe 13h ago

Ok, then let me make a more direct analogy. If I make videos where I cosplay as someone who is homeless, but actually pull in 500k a year. Would that make me homeless? I think people are pointing out that people like her are wearing the outfits for content, but not actually a part of the culture or living that lifestyle. It's a wardrobe change. I don't know this girl or her content, I assume it's an only fans model, but I'll be willing to bet she couldn't name the lead singer of Bauhaus, 5 type o negative songs, and when the cameras are off, dresses quite differently

Tl:Dr she's being called a poser.

u/ToxicNerdette 13h ago

Bro what goth culture are you talking about? Being able to list off every goth singer or album to prove their street cred? I’ve had a goth aesthetic for 20 years but that doesn’t mean I need to love Bauhaus or Type O Negative. Goth is an aesthetic.

u/EddieTheAxe 13h ago

So if I go to a goth club tonight. I should have no expectation of the social circles having their own values, slang, worldviews etc? The music will be a big mix, like a melting pot of different types of music? Because if that's what you think, as someone who has been a part of that culture since 1995, I can tell you that is factually incorrect.

u/4r4r4real 13h ago

Well a cowboy drives cattle. You'd be dressing up like a cowboy. Same as if you or I threw on a white coat and a stethoscope.

What does a "real goth" do? What does that occupation entail?

Well if you have a home you're not homeless no, you're just dressing up like a homeless person.

But dressing up as a goth literally is what being a goth is. That's the extremely straightforward and clear cut point you seem to be missing. There is no definition of a goth BEYOND the dressing up. That's all it is.

You're just gatekeeping your hobby.

u/EddieTheAxe 13h ago

That assumes it's a hobby, and is just dressing up in a style. I can dress up as a cowboy, and according to you because there are other requirements that makes me something other than a cowboy. Because of the job that is associated with that aesthetic. Goth is also an aesthetic. As is punk, hip hop, etc. Normally they are associated with a culture, music, and social circles. Have you ever heard of juggalos? They dress a specific way, typically have similar values, and tend to all be fans of a group called the insane clown posse. They have their own slang, events, etc. So in your worldview, anyone who puts on juggalos makeup, and clothes is a direct and exact representation of all that?

u/4r4r4real 13h ago

Yes. These are not exclusive groups with strict entry requirements. If you dress like a goth and say you're a goth, you're a goth. If you put on clown makeup and listen to ICP you're a juggalo. And if your identity boils down to being a part of one of these groups and gatekeeping others who want to, you're a clown.

Hope this helps!

u/EddieTheAxe 13h ago

But what if I post 1-3 videos a week where I dress as a goth, a juggalo, and a cowboy. But in my everyday life I wear a graphic tee, jeans, and airwalks? And I listen only to classical music. Then what am I? I'm someone who attempts to appeal to various aesthetics for some motivation. Clout, attention, money, etc.

u/4r4r4real 13h ago

Someone who plays dress up? That's all being a goth is... we're going in circles here. Enjoy the holiday.

u/azjunglist05 11h ago

“If you dress like a goth AND say you’re a goth, you’re a goth”

Wasn’t your entire argument that you simply needed to dress goth to be goth? 🤔

u/4r4r4real 10h ago

Yeah. Someone who dresses like a goth and says they're a goth meets those requirements, no? Unless you're somehow proposing that saying you're a goth means you can't be one?

Not sure what you're trying to say here.
