guarantee. The problem isn't that I can't spell it, it's that it looks wrong even when it's spelled right. So I second guess myself a million times til I finally just look it up
I never realized barrel was one of those words for some people. For me, it was camouflage, until I misspelled it in the 5th grade spelling bee and got 4th place and thus no trophy. Have never forgotten how to spell that word since. ☹️
Beryl it's because no matter what even if it gets the word right it won't get the correct word if there's a possible other spelling. Including, if it doesn't make any sense in any language.

Omg please tell me why it’s “value” for me. Almost every single time I go to spell it I do a little * spells vaule, ope nope that’s not right, spells value.
I work at a pharmaceutical company and have had to write a few deviations/investigations for missing data due to petri plates drying out. While was writing those I kept forgetting how many Ss and Cs were involved.
Yeah it’s genuinely mostly rogue and rouge, there/they’re/their, where/were vs we’re, and a few others :’) English is a hard language to learn tbh so I respect those that learn it as a second or third language
I cannot believe how often I’ve seen that one! Mine is bureaucracy, I often spell it so wrong that even spellcheck has no idea, and I need to google it!
I still don’t know what the correct spelling is for “drawer” (droor?), the thing in your dresser that you put clothes in. I’ve looked it up many times and I’ve never been able to remember it.
I use the word fairly often, and only feel comfortable doing so because of autocorrect. If I had to spell it to save my life, I'd resign myself to death.
Rhythm Has Your Two Hips Moving!! It's the only way I can remember it...by far the best and most useless acronym going. Every day I need to spell that word exactly zero times but I still remember how to just in case.
Also English (British English) keeps some of the extra letters of those words to remind the other languages just who stole from it in the dark alley. :)
English is my first language and I didn’t realise you had spelled it wrong, to be fair though I’m very dyslexic (also the spelling of dyslexic is evil)
I teach English and spelled it wrong every time for years. Then a kid who was learning English as a second language told me it’s “rats have yellow teeth, hm?” I’ve spelled it right since then lol. That kid was amazing, and I think of him each time I have to spell rhythm. Hope he’s out there thriving and teaching spelling to others.

Don't feel bad at all! The thing with English, is that it's actually like 7 languages in a trenchcoat pretending to be one, and each one likes to pretend it's rules are most important. That's why we say armadillo with the L sound, but quesadilla uses the Spanish "yuh" sound. There are no rules here. It is a lawless linguistic wasteland
English is not so much a "language" but three trade dialects in a trench-coat (West German, Old Norse, & Low Saxon/Frisian), waiting in an alley to jump other languages, knock them unconscious, and rifle through their pockets for loose words and grammar.
As was said, there are words that even native speakers get wrong. I was in high school (and in advanced English) before I realized embarrass had two Rs.
Funny story about rhythm- there is an episode of New Girl where one of the characters writes a zombie novel about a town called Rhythm City... and misspells rhythm a different way each time. :)
Just wanted to step in and say that I’m a spelling bee nerd. Like, the kid in school who studied for them. And rhythm is a bitch of a word. There’s no need for the h you missed. There’s already a perfectly good h later that you included. They made it spelled that way just to be bitches. You shouldn’t feel any negative way about getting it wrong. ❤️
especially in america, many english words are spelled a little differently, partially because we got hooked on phonics and not spelling, but also because when ads first were printed it cost per letter so many were shortened in ways that don’t change their sound
I know the spelling of rhythm without fail... But one day I learned of the mnemonic "Red Hot You Three Headed Monster" and I can't spell the word anymore without it even if I never needed it before...
