Other Question Advice for new transfer students?

I just transferred here from my local community college and I’m feeling a little lost. I’m sure I’m in the same boat with a lot of new students. I was wondering if anybody had any advice or pointers to meet new people and make friends as a transfer student and possible ways to get involved on campus?

Are you living on campus? If so my number one tip is, knock on doors on your way to the dining hall. People hate eating alone and you can amass a good cohort of neighbors to accompany you. Friend groups will definitely grow from there.

I’m living at an off-campus apartment here in DeKalb however I am getting a meal plan so thanks for the tip!

Go to Holmes Student Center. A lot of students like to gather around there and all the different clubs mostly meet there. Go to the activities around campus during welcome week. The weekend before school starts is Corn Fest. Definitely worth going and walking around, the bars are usually packed with students.

Is there another one? I move in around that time today so I won’t be able to make it:/

I transferred to NIU last year. I found that complimenting someone can go a long way!! Everyone here kinda has their groups so it can seem intimidating to go up and talk, but I've found that everyone is super nice and a compliment is a good way to just jump right in!

Find a party and you’ll make some friends

I transferred too and i say talk to people in class especially if you find them in your other classes. I have made a few friends from people that i shared classes with, you tend to see the same people if you have the same/similar majors. Get to class early and talk to the people waiting there. People are saying the student holmes center and thats a good spot to go but also hard to talk to new people unless an event is going on. The food trucks on Wednesday can get busy so you can meet people there. Also the student involvement fair is good to meet people and join clubs. Even if you don’t join a club it kinda forces you to talk to other people and if you are at the same booth you probably have something in common.
