Wisconsin (badgercare plus) - Does alimony received count as income?

Upvotes

I've looked online and I'm going to call my local medicaid office tomorrow morning to talk to them, but I could use some sanity checking. I enrolled successfully in badgercare last January. I'm divorced, 62 years old and my only income is alimony/spousal support of $3K/month and interest income from a savings account. When I enrolled I was told that alimony doesn't count as income for medicaid because the IRS counts it as non-taxable income. So that's how I qualified.

Now suddenly, medicaid has cut me off starting Sept 1st this month, citing the fact that my $3K/month income is over the cut off of $1330/month. Did something change?

I'm also thinking back to last year - before I signed up for it, I had attempted to get medical insurance on the ACA marketplace. At that time I found that with my $3K/month income, I didn't qualify for credits/subsidy/whatever, so they quoted me the full premium amounts that totalled well over my annual income. Even for the worst possible plans (highest deductibles, lowest coverage). If I no longer qualify for medicaid, and can't afford an ACA plan, I guess I'm self-insuring which kind of means no more health care for me until I'm old enough for medicare. Anybody else here fall into this trap? What did you do?

(I know I can look for a part time job that offers health insurance, but 1) I'd hate to take a job from a younger person who needs one, and 2) I retired so that I could spend my time on myself and doing volunteer work. I'll do that if I have to, but it's my plan B... or plan C.)

As far as I can tell the fed/state just aren't updating public data anymore. Was consistently released on the 2nd of each month, now our public health system has gone silent.

NYC Medicaid — denied CASA because nursing home lists me as 2-person Hoyer. Can I use MLTC first and switch later?

Upvotes

I’m currently in a nursing home in NYC trying to discharge back into the community.
I applied for CASA home care, but I was denied because the nursing home has me listed as needing a 2-person Hoyer lift. From what I understand, that 2-person requirement is basically the facility’s policy/documentation, not a separate medical assessment saying I actually need two people. NYIA/HRA seems to be relying on what the facility has documented.
My rehab doctor wrote a letter saying I only need one person for Hoyer transfers, so I’m appealing the CASA denial.
Because I don’t want to stay in the nursing home while the appeal takes months, I’m considering enrolling in HomeFirst MLTC so I can get home.
My question is: if I get home through MLTC and later win my CASA fair hearing, has anyone been able to disenroll from MLTC and switch to CASA/fee-for-service home care while already living in the community?
I’m not planning to drop MLTC unless CASA is actually approved and ready to start. I’m just trying to understand whether that kind of transition is possible.

Aging Out of SSI Benefits

Upvotes

What happens with Medicaid benefits when someone who's been receiving SSI ages out at 62 and starts receiving retirement benefits? In this case the monthly payment will only be $50/month more ($994 vs $1044) keeping income far below the annual FPL. Also wondering what happens to disability status when this changeover occurs? Asking for a resident of Louisiana.

?s in North Carolina

Upvotes

Good evening from NC,

Long story short..... I am going to receive LTD benefits from my previous employer's insurance company.

When I applied for Medicaid, actually the healthcare.gov bumped me to it actually. Anyway, I went to the e pass portal and submitted the change for myself.

I took a screenshot of the confirmation number page.

My question is do I stop using Medicaid? I still have doctor's appointments and prescriptions that need refilling.

My wife says go with it until I receive a letter in the mail of a notification of termination.

Then go to healthcare.gov and apply for some kind of silver plan. Our neighbor says if I get a silver plan that I can receive big subsidies to offset the monthly premium.

Is this sounding correct? Thank you for your time and input.

Ohio Medicaid and household income

Upvotes

Edit below:

I took FMLA early June to care for my wife who is in poor health. She was able to get Medicaid last Month and also approved for the Passport program. She will be 65 next month and will be on Medicare which will become her primary insurance. Her only income is her measly $775 SS check and she has no assets. I have not had any income since June but had enough to pay the bills for July and August. I have become her paid caregiver thru Careforth this week (via the Passport program). We have a shared checking account. Question: once I start working, will my income affect her Medicaid eligibility in any way? Her income does not change but our household income will.

Edit......I am not on Medicaid, only my wife. I have my own insurance.

Work requirements in state of Ohio?

Upvotes

Trying to figure out how to navigate this, I am filing for disability as it is for fibromyalgia, chronic migraine, C-PTSD, OCD, and Boderline Schizophrenia. I'm seeing a lot of people talk about doctors notes for work exemption, has anyone got a step-by-step of this or how it would work for Ohioans?

I'm terrified of losing my anxiety/migraine meds.

Lawyer adament that they only look at purchases over 2k.. then AI tells me otherwise (Upstate NY) long term care medicaid

Upvotes

I asked her lawyer about regularly ordering doordash. Buying 100s of dollars worth of diapers to stock up. Electronics. All she says if they wont look at anything under 2k. Is this true? We have about 1 or two months to soend down money. So if I soend 7k of that on stuff thats not gifts they wont even notice and wont be an issue? Im confused. How picky are they? Whats the real limit? Anything under 2k or are they more sticklers than that?

For instance I wsnt to buy my grandmother a new phone, laptop, drawing(artist) tablet because she used to do art, and maybe even a game console to keep in her room. Is this allowed is all are under 2k? AI is telling me it is absolutely not allowed

Illinois - Will my parents see visits?

Upvotes

I'm currently 18 and still on my parents medicaid, but will be kicked off it when I turn 19. As of now, would my parents see the insurance charges if I visited somewhere (ie. OSF or Planned parenthood)? I never ended up signing anything to allow them to see my medical records, but since I'm only on Medicaid as their dependant, I'm not quite sure how it works.

Ohio Transitional Medicaid

Upvotes

Hi,

I have kind of a weird situation and my caseworker hasn't gotten back to me. 1 questions really.

I'm starting a new job and will be making to much for Medicaid. I reported it and am on Transitional Medicaid as of October 1. I was on parent/caretaker Medicaid as I have 2 kids. One of them is claimed by me and the other is claimed by his dad for the child tax credit but both are on my taxes for earned income credit as they live 70% with me.

  1. Does my other child count for Medicaid or no since I don't claim the child tax credit for him? I've asked my county twice and haven't gotten an answer, just vague "I'm not sure".

  2. As part of a divorce, I'm going to be receiving some cash from retirement that will be converted into a Roth in the next few weeks. I understand this is taxable income but do I report it as earned income on my quarterly report and if so will that mess up receiving Transitional Medicaid for the second 6 month period? Same thing, I asked but didn't get an answer one way or the other.

Thank you!

MINNESOTA MA - establishing paternity

Upvotes

I have medicaid for myself (33 F) and my son (1 M). We live alone but I have a long term boyfriend. We were seperated when my son was conceived and we have always thought a very intoxicated, non consentual one night stand was the bio dad. Mn medicaid paperwork was filled out as no dad in the picture and no last name for them to hunt him down for child support. My son is starting to look like my boyfriends twin so he took a DNA test and low and behold he is somehow the dad. We didnt have sex for almost the whole month of conception so I dont know how but he is bio dad.

Anyways - how do I go about updating MA that a bio dad has been found who is able and willing to add child to his health insurance? I dont want to get hit with fraud investigation or make him go on child support (he already supports us some and we are getting married in a year) just to get this cleared up. I essentially want to just cancel MA for my son (and I as I have an employer plan to join this open enrollment) and then add dad to BC (via ROP paperwork) but I dont want a gap in coverage. If I call them and tell them what is going on will they let me just end MA completely or will they insist on staying involved? If I could go back, id have son on dads plan immediately and never mess with MA at all.

One plan is to cancel MA effective 12/31/2026, open enrollment myself this Nov for 2027, have dad fill out ROP and new BC in December and use his new (legally) dependent as a qualifying life event in Dec/January when official to add child to dads employer plan. Instead of essentially admitting to MA we were wrong all along. I just worry that him doing the ROP/BC will flag the MA people honestly. Can I call them and "hypothetically" ask these questions?

Texas Medicaid questions

Upvotes

My mom is disabled and lives with us. She now has Alzheimer’s and we need to place her in a nursing home. For that reason we are now applying for Medicaid. The application is so confusing to me.
1. She pays us $250 rent. Do we include my family on the app? Or is she considered a single person household since our finances are all seperate except the rent she pays us? She pays her own groceries etc.
2. Because of the dementia/Alzheimer’s I am filling it out for her (I have POA and medical proxy). Am I the “head of household contact person or is that her?

CA - Medi-Cal - Question on assets and income

Upvotes

Hello, and thanks in advance for your help.

Older son lives in CA, is over 26 years old and is not currently working (i.e. no income). He has been approved for Medi-Cal since Sept 2025. He attends school and volunteers at 2 different places weekly, so we're confident he will meet the 80 hour/month work / volunteer / school requirement.

However, I've been reading this sub-reddit and have seen inquiries about asset tests and limits. Do we need to worry about an asset test for him?

1) He has a savings account (birthday checks, earnings from previous jobs, etc.) so I'm wondering if we need to "spend it down".

2) He is also listed as a joint account holder for my and my husband's bank accounts (which have substantially more money than his savings account) so wondering if we need to remove his name as joint account holder.

Again, thank you!

Virginia MAGI Medicaid inherited IRA question

Upvotes

I received an “inherited” Ira from an aunt and because of the way the estate/beneficiaries were handled, I have to withdraw the entire amount within the next couple of years. For tax reasons, it would be beneficial to spread it out, but it would put me well over the threshold of eligibility and if I’m going to lose coverage, I’d rather lose it for one year (take it all out at once) than three (spread it out) due to extensive medical costs.

I cannot find a clear answer on how to handle it because the IRS will count it as taxable income. It would be more like a lump sum payment, but would that make me ineligible for the entire year or just for one month? My case worker has flat out refused to answer my questions, saying she can’t advise me and I just have to report when I receive money.

I’m extra confused given the new 6 month renewals that start next year. Technically my current coverage goes until May.

I can’t find a lawyer in Virginia well versed in MAGI Medicaid (this part is important because the rules are different). I guess I’m just trying to find out if anyone else has dealt with something similar (a convoluted inheritance that includes taxable income).

California- Medi cal being terminated after I just got it?

Upvotes

I’m in Orange County, CA and was just approved for Medi-Cal less than a month ago. I just got a notice saying it will end 9/30 because I didn’t provide “renewal information.” I’m unemployed and currently receiving EDD unemployment and CalFresh (food stamps), and I already provided the information they requested.
Why would I already need a renewal when I was just approved? Has anyone had this happen?

I’m 28, have a child and pregnant. I got laid off May 1, 2026.

Inactive, Past Renewal, and denied due "failing to provide verification" (Colorado Health First)

Upvotes

I had already submitted all of my identity verification they asked for, but for some reason they asked for it again, even though it's all still there on my profile. I didn't check my account for a while but I've got a doctors appointment coming up in 5 days and i'm wondering if i could get it back before then. I've been on the website for an hour and looking up things but there's just no option to reapply. The app says my next renewal is next year, but i need to renew it now. I've clicked on everything trying to find where I can just reapply. Is there anything at all i could do online, or do i have to wait until the county office opens back up?

Woodlawn Medicaid Process (Chicago, IL)

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I applied for medicaid recently and I have not been contacted yet regarding my application and/or to set up an appointment. I moved to Chicago two weeks ago and have a chronic illness that I need insurance for ASAP (moved from another state with medicaid). How can I contact them because I have called two numbers (773-735-5200 and 800-843-6154) multipel times and I have not been able to get anyone on the line. Am I supposed to wait for them to call me, but then how do I know when my application is being processed / they will contact me back? Do I need to go to the woodlawn location in person without an appointment?

I would appreciate any help or suggestions on what to do in this case! Context: I am a 23F, low-income job (less than 6K per year), graduate student with loans, federal-work-study (if it matters), & have had medicaid before (but my parents applied).

Should I meet with social security or DARS before applying for a job?

Upvotes

I am a 23 year old disabled male and I want to look for a job. However, I am not sure about how many hours I can work or how much I can make because I don’t want social security to take my money as I am disabled and get medical supplies from them.

Thoughts?

Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) - Louisville, KY

Upvotes

Posting here in case anyone has any experience with this. Currently going through the application process through a PPEC daycare facility. We got an approval letter but when the daycare checks online it shows something different.

We have been give several numbers to call but no one seems to be able to help or knows the right people to talk to.

Does anyone with experience with knows of a phone number to contact at state level to check on this type of requests since none of the Medicaid numbers contacts have been able to help.

Thanks in advance!

If I don't meet the 20 hours, do just I lose Medicaid or my entire family?

Upvotes

We are a family of 5 in Ohio. My husband is self employed and I work PT with unpredictable hours. My kids have so many medical appointments, it makes it hard to work FT but that is the goal eventually! If I am unable to get 80 hours in a month at renewal, will my whole family lose Medicaid or just me? I know I can volunteer, or go to school, and I will probably do one of those but I am just wondering for worst case scenario situation. My husband is trying to find a job and leave his business behind so he can finally have benefits but in the meantime, this is our situation. Thanks!
