casual hot take Tiktok should've been banned.

Good god the world would be so much better. Think of it. Less misinformation, less viral content, better attention spans. Also they wouldn't be defending a woman who killed her kids. Fuck I hate tiktok. How's yalls day btw

The world was a better place before social media and smartphones existed. Period.

u/stardust1914 1d ago

Double edged sword.

u/commonCranberry999 13h ago

social media was great at the beginning. stuff like myspace. it only started to suck once all the normies got on it.

u/Antorias99 6h ago

I don't think social media is that bad but it evolved into something very bad becuase I truly do believe that it's ruining attention spans and childhoods.

I kinda feel this way about all social media. It’s rotting our brains lol

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Agreed. Most of social media is a hellhole

u/FOTORABIA23 1d ago

I got booted off TT. Best day ever.

u/shwifty123 1d ago

No one is forced to use it. I've Never had it, many people whom I know, also never had it and never will. You can't ban everything, for the greater good.

u/RandomIDoIt90 1d ago

Me as well! I said I was taking a break and I feel bad for not going back and talking to my friends on there but the idea of opening that app again, especially since AI garbage has gotten 100x worse since, makes my skin crawl.

That’s wild but kind of typical for your age group. I’m 36 and my friends even online are around my age. No one really gets shocked or flabbergasted at our big age if someone takes a break or leaves socials lol

u/MonicaLewinskibidis 1d ago

Reddit nearly ruined a man’s life by accusing him of bombing a marathon

u/Minute-Associate-220 1d ago

You're right about the attention span part and it's actually measurable, the endless algorithmic feed is the mechanism doing it. The catch is that Reels and Shorts cloned that within a year, so a ban on its own would have just moved everyone across.

u/Moist_crocs 1d ago

This, something about having the ability to move on from content is what fries brains apparently, you can do this with Reddit too, not just videos, if you scroll through your feed without really engaging with anything just reading you can get the same feeling. The algos are the big problem

u/Wenndy042 1d ago

Meh! Depending on what you like to watch.

Yes some are hateful people, very opinionated people and misinformation.

But some is very useful. I get some good recommendations about health, sport, craft, book reading, new music and funny meme.

It depend on your algorithm. What you like to watch.

Every social media are like that. You just have to be careful about it. You select what you like to watch and skip all that non sens. It not all bad.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

While this is true ( most of mine is animes, games, and books) I can't control other ppls. Which is just begging for extremists and misinformation. Because misinformation gets attention

u/troubledanddoubled 1d ago

Exactly just cuz my girlfriends got the emotional maturity to press ‘not interested’ on misogynistic and misandrist content she mostly gets videos of her actual interests. The problem isn’t the well regulated people.

It’s people like me, who engage with this shit all the time.

u/AeonsSeen 1d ago

TikTok is the SoMe for tards.

u/hannelore_pfeffer8 1d ago

I love tiktok. It shows me science, news and dance videos

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

You can find that on YouTube.

u/hannelore_pfeffer8 1d ago

YouTube is unusable with the ads

u/Yuck_Few 15h ago

I bought adguard for YouTube

u/No-Straw-777 1d ago

People that watch videos from tiktok about injecting insulin into their stomachs to get thin?? Well my wife's friends got cancer and died shortly after because of that

u/onandnonna 1d ago

eh? injecting insulin doesn't give you cancer

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Sorry for your loss

u/skronk61 1d ago

Mine’s pretty informative, the algorithm is based on what you like and interact with so saying it’s all trash means you just don’t know how to curate your feed.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

My feeds fine. It's just anime and games. But others aren't like that and information spreads like rabbits

u/skronk61 1d ago

Yeah so you’re basically agreeing that it’s not totally the platform’s problem. It’s the people.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Yep. Just like giving ppl free access to explosives is stupid. The explosives ain't the problem the ppl are.

u/Dazzling-Mission3960 1d ago

There is misinformation and idiots everywhere .

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Yeah but tiktok ain't helping since it's entirely centered around " what will go viral?"

u/MidorriMeltdown 1d ago

Ban twitter x first.

u/StructureBetter9165 23h ago

Why would you want to ban X?

u/MidorriMeltdown 14h ago

because it's a septic tank.

u/StructureBetter9165 12h ago

What's the difference between X, TikTok, and here? They all pretty much seem the same.

u/MidorriMeltdown 11h ago

Tiktok contains a lot of young people exchanging ideas. When twitter was new, it was more like it, but in the years leading up to becoming x it seems to have filled with older people who have narrow views, and the idea sharing people left. Between 2022 and 2023 was the first exodus, the second bigger one came at the end of 2024.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

No. Tiktok is bigger. It's banned first

u/slainascully 23h ago

Twitter posted deepfake child sex abuse material and revenge porn of hundreds of thousands of women???

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Ok? Once more. Tiktok is bigger its got a larger pull on ppl. X is much smaller and is less of a priority.

u/slainascully 17h ago

‘Less of a priority’ to you, to the women targeted it probably matters a lot more than brainrot and doomscrolling

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Yep that's exactly what I said. Have a good day hotshot

u/FanSerious7672 1d ago

Well all that happens on Reddit too

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Reddit is also full of morons but its less sensationalism and viral attention seeking.

u/Special-Audience-426 1d ago

I'm certain the whole Lindsay Clancy support movement wasn't organic.

It was 100% orchestrated by people wanting to get her off by tainting the jury and feeding them misinformation. There were far too many bots spreading the exact same new lies within minutes every day until the useful idiots picked them up and parroted them for free.

As soon as they knew the jury wouldn't be sequestered they went all out.

u/Goomysaur 1d ago

why was the jury not sequestered in a case like this?

u/Special-Audience-426 1d ago

Pure incompetence

u/Goomysaur 1d ago

Can’t she just mistrial this case for that?

u/troubledanddoubled 1d ago

Truly acknowledging this people on trial should have their banks locked. She’s been donated £1,000,000. It costs £50 for 100,000 views I’m sure it’s £50 for 10,000 comments. In theory she or her family could’ve funded bots over 2,000 times, generating 2,000,000 false comments.

u/slainascully 23h ago

There’s also a significant amount of accounts using this to post about how women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, so idk why you think it was orchestrated to get her off

u/curryMax21 1d ago

The reason it worked was that women are like LLMs being fine tuned by social media

u/slainascully 23h ago

You’re literally posting in multiple looksmaxxing subs and obsessing about tall guys

u/aislingplath 1d ago

If not for tik tok it would just be insta, threads, Facebook YouTube shorts/reels. It's not one platform that's the issue.

I don't use tiktok.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Those gotta go to. Im just saying tiktok because its the most popular

u/aislingplath 1d ago

Pretty sure Facebook still has the most active monthly users followed closely by Instagram. Tiktok is only popular in certain demographics so it's reach isn't as big as some of the others (still huge though).

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

1.12 billion ppl use tiktok daily. That's a good chunk of the population

u/aislingplath 14h ago

Yeah, I'm being too literal haha because I got curious and did the research lol. 😅

Facebook still sits at the most active monthly users (3.2 billion - insane!) and then YouTube (I don't consider this social media but it comes up in all the research) and Instagram tend to switch depending on the exact source for second/third place at 2.3-2.5 billion active monthly users then Whatsapp (again I don't think this is the same category lol, even less so than YouTube!). Tiktok is pretty firmly in 5th place with 1.5 billion monthly users. This is consistent in the 2025-2026 numbers. Reddit is way down at around 8 haha.

The research is clear that those numbers don't take into account that one person can have multiple accounts on all those platforms. Because yeah I was like HALF the whole worlds population is on Facebook every month, that's insane. But who knows what the actual individual numbers of people on is, impossible to know that.

Tldr; Regardless, tiktok is a huge problem, I agree. I think they all are (Whatsapp not so much!? I thought Whatsapp is just messaging so I really don't know why it's in the same category lol).

Misinformation, short form content and the way the algorithms work are the problem. Eliminating one would just create another one doing the same thing 😭

u/Born-Cauliflower_ 1d ago

Tiktok and twitter, maybe Instagram comments.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Im on the side that the world would be better with less social media

u/Formal_Economist7342 19h ago

I agree but extend that grace to instagram, twitter and even reddit.

u/RoutineKoala4 12h ago

I meannn the recipe videos slap can’t lie

u/SchatzMoney 1d ago

People defending her have been listing and reading court reports; not bs TikTok trash. Which was also why 11 jurors voted to acquit. Unless you have been reading court reports and watching the proceedings; don’t comment.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

No very few of them have. I've been reading a good bit. I say throw her ass in a cell.

u/SchatzMoney 17h ago

Husband did it.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Rage bait or genuine stupidity?

u/SchatzMoney 17h ago

Evidence points that way. He was also never investigated at all which makes no sense.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 16h ago

The evidence points to him running a 4 minute mile, suffocating his kids, making the wife think she did it, running a four minute mile back, get caught on camera all while on call with his wife and then driving back and calling the cops with a phonecall so sad and distressing that the cops won't release it? Grow up.

u/SchatzMoney 16h ago

He could have staged all of this if he had brought her watch with him. Video surveillance footage shows him with it in his hand. Also why was he wearing different cloths upon entering the CVS then when he left the house. He's a total dirt bag whose new lady's father is high up in a creepy ass sex cult. Lindsey either found out or was asking questions about if he's been sex trafficking their daughter, on the private trips he was taking just with her, and confronted him about it so he killed her because it was all true. The jury was gonna acquit based on so many holes in this trash ass case. If you think you know more than 11 jurors then you are the one who needs to grow up.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 16h ago

Dumb dumb are you crazy? There's video footage of him. There's several alliabis, she literally said she did it. The court case isn't about whether or not she's innocent. She's guilty everyone knows that. Its about whether she should be put in a cell or a outhouse. You can make up whatever you want. The defense said it's her. The cops said it's her. She said it's her. It was her She killed her babies

u/SchatzMoney 15h ago

Hahahahaha. You clearly don’t know how court works. End convo.

u/pacoLL3 20h ago

You guys must be joking.

How is not everything you just said 100% true for reddit aswell?

Dear god is this place dumb ...

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

More ppl use tiktok

u/feral0101 1d ago

TikTok is the best social media platform. I can understand anti-social media sentiment but specifically anti-TikTok rhetoric is just a misimpression of early TikTok or outright propaganda.

I say that as someone that didn’t have a TikTok account until last year and downloaded it with skepticism

u/Norwind90 1d ago

Best tool for the CCP

u/feral0101 1d ago

… so US propaganda is what keeps you away.

u/Norwind90 1d ago

No, a proper formed frontal lobe does.

u/feral0101 1d ago

This would carry weight if you didn’t post this on Reddit lol

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Its most of social media but im mainly pointing out tiktok because ots the worst

u/feral0101 1d ago

I would genuinely say X is the worst by far because it SOLELY thrives on controversy, hate, and is run by a literal insecure schizo that actively enables propaganda.

Reddit is much cleaner but also very toxic compared to TikTok.

TikTok is much larger and has a much better algorithm that lets you build a great FYP.

All of social media is bad, but Twitter takes the cake. TikTok> Reddit > IG > FB > X

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

You are forgetting reach and size. How many ppl use X compared to tiktok?

u/Killthepasta 20h ago

nah X/twitter‘s community notes make it much better at calling bullshit than the others

u/InformationFit4059 1d ago

I don’t think TikTok should be banned but I do think more people should be banned on TikTok. Also if you’re under the age of 18 you shouldn’t be allowed on it

u/FOTORABIA23 1d ago

Man its toxic as hell. Live chats by Nazis etc...its fads and pastimes are creating hell. Nine people inc two policemen were killed in the UK recently all related to one incident...and it can be linked back to Tik Tok

u/Norwind90 1d ago

CCP wouldn't as long as those people prove useful in sowing discord.

u/SleepyFella0312 1d ago

I think you would LOVE most slime ranters

u/Ill_Interest_2346 1d ago

But no tik tok means no charli d'amelio

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

Your making it easier

u/Ill_Interest_2346 1d ago

As a fan of hers especally the new thicker version of her it would suck if we had no way to enjoy her content

u/ImWithStupidKL 1d ago

I'm not in favour of banning any social media, but I am in favour of making them legally responsible for everything that appears on their platform. Someone libels someone on Tiktok, you should be allowed to sue Tiktok. Someone posts something illegal, well you published it, so you should be prosecuted the same as if a newspaper published it. What do you think would happen in a newspaper published child abuse images, for example? It wouldn't be a fine, it'd be prison. It should be the same for Mark Zuckerberg.

u/Habibi-77 1d ago

I think the parents are part of the problem and encourage their kids to use that stuff. I’m almost 40 with no social media, I cancelled my all of them about 4 years ago. My gf has a teenage daughter, she was literally nagging her kid to make a fb for a couple months

u/Solid-Copy-6189 1d ago

You do know reddit is a social media website right

u/Habibi-77 1d ago

I see where you’re coming from, but I don’t see it as social media. I don’t have my name, posts, pictures nothing. My profile picture is a random picture of the internet. If I had a fb or IG my name is there, pictures, job, friends, family and a lot more. You can literally know everything about a person from their profile. On Reddit none of you know anything about me, only if you’re a hacker or the government you’ll be able to

u/Glittering-Dot-2025 13h ago

you can literally do all of that on fb or ig idk why you think that is exclusive to reddit.

u/WonderinglyWorld 15h ago

The truth is if it wasn’t TikTok it would be something else that would have eventually done the same thing. Same with AI, almost inevitable but the execution is always by choice

u/caelan_mcmahon 6h ago

Tiktok didn't make people support kids being murdered. Liberalism did that all on it's own

u/atrillionpieces 2h ago

I think the algorithms are the prime offender. People who craft algorithms for social media have a very low view of their consumers.

u/PreferenceVisual2408 22m ago

should also ban all right wing ideology and rich men because those things brought about tik tok

u/AttentionNo6359 1d ago

Watching Gen Z shit it’s oversized, high waisted pants for a piece of literal Chinese spyware was pretty damn dystopian.

u/TheRealcebuckets 1d ago

Yes.

Nothing further to add.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Simple. I like simple

u/StructureBetter9165 23h ago

Misinformation is spreading everywhere. Does that mean banning Reddit too? No, you just learn to spot the BS.

u/mitzi04 19h ago

It has rotted peoples brains and sense of morality and its a cesspool. I completely agree. Ive been saying this forever. People absorbed in tiktok irritate the hell out of me. Youre absolutely right

u/Dependent_Remove_326 1d ago

And social media ID should be tied to your social security. No more anonymous basement trolls or bots.

u/nintendoinnuendo 1d ago

Mental

u/Dependent_Remove_326 1d ago

Why? You should have to own what you say.

u/LockWinter 23h ago

Do you really trust giving away your social security to Elon Musk though? There's already been massive leaks on pretty much every social media

u/troubledanddoubled 1d ago

I agree, i dont get why people who are kind and understanding would have a problem wjth this.

Sure, someone could go on my phone, go into tiktok, write the words “I hate X” on a piece of paper and then upload that picture to my tiktok. So therefore online hate shouldn’t result in prison time just the banning of accounts. If your account security is shit enough for someone to get in, that account should be banned anyway

u/PopularSet4776 1d ago

Was it ever actually sold? Or is the president just ignoring a law that the congress had literally just passed right before he got into office?

u/Honest_Ad5029 1d ago

Text based social media is orders of magnitude easier and more productive as a misinformation and propaganda vehicle.

Social proof is much easier and more cost effective to generate with text based social media. Troll farms can go much farther and evade detection much easier.

The premise of tik tok being a vector for misinformation is largely overblown, and deliberate misinformation starting with the spread of protest footage, war footage, and genocide footage. Also, it was being used as a tool to organize boycotts and protest the trump admin in the first administration. Over the pandemic there was a brief window where it looked like there would be an economic awakening, but thats precisely around the time calls to ban it started ramping up.

It was a great tool for mutual education, but the days that it went dark and seemed like it would go away, as well as its eventual purchase by the fascist ologarchs, gradually chipped away at the perception of it as a useful tool.

Its still useful in commerce. A post on tik tok goes about 3 times as far as the same post on instagram.

u/Important_Speaker_60 23h ago

That would give the government far too much power. Do you want the government to be able to control what media you consume?

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

They already do. Mf do you think the news isn't controlled?

u/Important_Speaker_60 16h ago

It is incredibly partisan, but the government running propaganda through the news isn't the same as them being able to ban all other sources of information.

u/Solid-Copy-6189 16h ago

They already control all the media. And im not saying all sources of info. Just tiktok

u/pleasepassthepoo 23h ago

But not Reddit?

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Never said that. Reddit aswell

u/NoAssumption1978 15h ago

I think you are 100% wrong that people wouldnt defend her if TikTok was gone.

u/Medical-Patience-532 11h ago

Its too late the damage is far too gone even roblox has “mini videos” now in the app. Fucking Roblox

u/PermissionNeither 19h ago

But reddit is okay when it does the same thing?

u/Solid-Copy-6189 17h ago

Where did I ever say reddit is ok

u/DrHousePls 17h ago

This is such a bad and short sighted take. Banning an entire medium because you don't like a few idiots on there? We have tiktok to thank for the rise of information on Israel's genocide. Governments wanted to ban it to keep young people from organizing. Wanting that to happen is just willingly suppressing your own right to expression. Whether you use it or not.
