Discussion Mecool won't launch new boxes

Upvotes

A Mecool spokesperson told me they won't release devices anymore but current ones will still receive firmware updates until Google demands it.

The only device that seems to be excluded is the Mecool KT2, I've got one so now I will have to see what to do with that paperweight.

The store also lists practically all devices out of stock so this seems to be the end of the Mecool brand.

Discussion Casting to Google TV 4K streamer - how to fix YouTube app on phone not staying connected?

Upvotes

I've owned all the Chromecasts before and loved them. But I just replaced mine with the Google TV 4K Streamer, and the YouTube casting experience is weird.

I start casting a video from my Pixel 10 phone. When I open my phone a minute later, it doesn't seem to know I'm casting anymore. There's no in progress playback UI, and clicking a video just starts playing it on the phone. I have to click the cast button to connect back to the device first, and the tap an interstitial thumbnail pop-up that shows what's playing, and then I can actually connect like before, where I can pause, fast forward, change videos etc.

Incredibly annoying, anyone found a workaround?

Buying Advice Google TV with an unconventional setup...will it work?

Upvotes

Hey all!

I use projection and a soundbar with a cable box currently. I thought I was savvy enough, because I had successfully used an HDMI IN splitter in my old soundbar model to be able to swap between cable and a Chromecast but the tech didnt translate to even the new-ish versions of Chromecast (the white wall powered ones, instead of the grey USB powered old models). I gave up...buttt I have Google Store credit and an itch to defeat this tech hurdle.

Current setup (no Google products):

CABLE BOX HDMI-> HDMI IN port (SOUNDBAR)-> 4K HDMI OUT (SOUNDBAR)-> PROJECTOR

Ideal new:

(SPLITTER)

GOOGLE TV HDMI as 1 IN

CABLE HDMI as 2 IN

Splitter HDMI OUT [into] HDMI IN (of SOUNDBAR) -> 4K HDMI OUT (SOUNDBAR, no change) -> PROJECTOR

I got a different soundbar as of 2024, it's Samsung. I do still have (gonna keep it, ideally) cable with VZN FiOS, so I would like to either go back to a splitter, or would have to get rid of cable and go to all Google TV and use YouTube TV/Hulu Live, etc. to cover all channels. I will not be going full-on streaming. The cost would likely work out to be the same anyway, with how expensive streaming apps have become, I just like cable!

I tried exhaustively to get the old splitter to work with the new version of Chromecast and my Cable HDMI as the 2x 'HDMI IN'. That's what makes me wonder if the Google TV won't work. Any thoughts or experiences are welcomed.

Bug Report Screensaver is Horrendous

How do they manage to make it worse with every update?

* The now playing part is now unreadable and overlaps with other text
* The screensaver settings popup won’t go away
* The now playing part also no longer shows cover art - just the app icon from where it is playing

Apps Looking for exotic/rare Android TV & Google TV devices to test a Sleep Timer app.

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m developing TV SLEEP, a dedicated sleep timer app for Android TV and Google TV (turns your TV/box off automatically, with routines and voice control coming soon).

The app requires two permissions during onboarding. To make setup effortless, the buttons should deep-link directly into your device's specific settings menu. Since manufacturers (Xiaomi, Shield, generic boxes, Sony, TCL ...) handle settings paths differently, the shortcuts don't work reliably everywhere yet.

What I need from you:

  • Test the 2-minute onboarding flow.
  • Tell me your device model + whether the permission buttons opened the correct settings screen.
  • Keep it installed for the testing period (Google Play closed test requirement).

TLDR: Need 12+ testers with various Android TV / Google TV devices to check if settings deep-links work during onboarding.

Comment your TV/box model below or DM me, and I’ll send you the test link!

Buying Advice Bought a new 4k 144hz QLED, what streaming/TV device would be best for me?

Upvotes

Recently upgraded from a cheap-ish Polaroid 1080p TV to a 4k 144hz Hisense QLED. Difference is immediate night and day, my only immediate complaint is that VIDAA OS seems to lack the availability of apps like Jellyfin, Steam Link & Moonlight. I do have a FireTV stick, but it's a 2019 model and limited to 1080p60hz. It would be nice to get something that can achieve 4k60 or 1440p120

What options do I have, and what would you suggest? As far as I'm aware:

  • Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 - this is near the top of my list, my reservations are that it's a 7 year old model still costing around £200. I was kinda hoping we'd get a hint of a newer revision but I suppose with Nvidia's shifting focus towards SkyNET this is unlike. Are there similar alternatives to it (eg android based, decent specs, ethernet) out there?
  • FireTV - not really a fan of this as the cube is rather expensive and I don't want to get locked into amazon's eco system
  • Chrome TV - don't really know much but I've been told these are somewhere between FireTV units & stuff like the Nvidia shield?
  • HTPC - is this worth entertaining in the current economy? Are there any good HTPC software solutions that would use of a TV remote and HDMI CEC? I do have an unused Wyse 5070 but not sure this will be much use for my use case.

Troubleshooting UI elements, thumbnails, youtube videos look washed out/contrasty

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I use a Xiaomi MI Mini led S 65inch android tv. I don't know how this happened or what exactly this issue is called but my TV's UI elements like the volume sliders, settings menu, etc and other app's UI and basically everything that is not HDR or DV looks washed out, not as in dull but as in the whites look too bright the contrast feels high i can't explain this issue exactly. I factory reset my tv once and that didn't seem to help and I couldn't find any solution online.

Please look at the attached images, it is very difficult to capture what I see with a camera but you'll hopefully get an idea

Buying Advice Smart tv with Google TV, can it be a dumb TV?

Upvotes

I have been looking for a good value TV, like Xiaomi which looks good on paper.

can I use the TV without internet?

is it required sign on when booting up the TV? usually you can't skip that step on Android TV

will there be issue if I use like another Android TV like Nvidia shield? usually I use the TV remote to navigate my shield and TV.

can you hard reset a TV? let say I'm changing launcher or ADB something that breaks..

Troubleshooting TCL 55Q750G Suddenly Offline in Google Home and Won’t Generate QR Code

Upvotes

I have a TCL 55Q750G Google TV, and Google Home has suddenly stopped working with it.

The TV now shows as offline in the Google Home app, even though the TV itself is connected to the internet and otherwise works normally.

I tried reconnecting it through the TV. When I go to the Google Home option and select the option to connect/setup Google Home, it is supposed to generate a QR code that I can scan with my phone. However, no QR code is generated at all.

Has anyone run into this issue with the TCL Q7 or another TCL Google TV? Is there a workaround to reconnect the TV to Google Home without doing a full factory reset?

Troubleshooting Can't setup TV Streamer with app, can't cast or use mobile remote if setup without app

Upvotes

Hi!

I bought a Google TV Streamer the other day. When setting it up the first time I couldn't do it with the Google Home app on my phone.

When I open the app it finds the TV Streamer, I scan the QR code but get an error message saying it couldn't autorize the Google TV Streamer.

I have tried using ethernet, wifi and even tried with a tablet and connected to my phone hotspot instead but nothing helps.

If I do the setup using the Google TV Streamer remote I can finish the setup and the GTVS is added to my home in the Google Home app.

However, I cannot use my phone as a remote. The remote option in the Google Home app doesn't work (just says it can't find the GTVS) and it just doesn't connect with the Google TV-app.

Also, none of my apps can cast to the GTVS but they can cast to my Nest Mini speakers.

Please note that I also have a Xiaomi TV Box S gen 3 that I can connect to both as a remote and also cast, so I know it's possible.

I have already done a factory reset twice and am out of ideas!

Troubleshooting How does one start-up Shizuku on a Google TV Streamer (4K)?

We don't have a notification panel to display the fleeting, transient pairing code, and as soon as one switches out of developer options' wireless debugging back to Shizuku — poof! — the pairing code is gone and changed out from under us!

Troubleshooting Volume Down stopped working via CEC

Upvotes

Hey!

I have a Xiaomi TV Box S gen 3 and a Google TV Streamer. I have both configured to use CEC to control volume and power (instead of IR which was default) but yesterday the Xiaomi box suddenly stopped sending Volyme Down commands via CEC.

It still sends Volume Up but not Volume Down. If I connect my Google TV Streamer to the same HDMI cable and port it works just fine. Only the Xiaomi box has this issue.

Changing settings to use IR will of course use IR but since I want to replace the Xiaomi remote, I will need to have CEC working.

Any ideas?

Troubleshooting tuner micro stuttering like low hz

Upvotes

I am using the Dreamstar Nova 2 with a tuner named My monitor is a Dell S2721DGFA 27" 1440p. The TV box resolution setting is set to 1080p 50Hz. While watching satellite broadcasts via the tuner (especially on news channels with scrolling ticker text at the bottom), I can see that the scrolling text is not running at a true 50Hz. It feels like it is definitely lower than 50 fps. For example, if I am on a channel, switch to the channel below, and then return to the same channel, it fixes itself; sometimes it doesn't.

For instance, when I am in the YouTube app and open the TV app, there are stuttering-like issues, as if there are micro-stutters and it isn't smooth. Then, when I return to the background YouTube app, close it, and reopen the satellite receiver app, the stutter is gone, and I can tell from the scrolling text that I am genuinely watching the satellite broadcast at 50fps. However, when I switch to another channel and come back to the same channel, I get that stuttering feeling again. Or, while watching the same channel, if I enter the TV box settings via the remote and return to the satellite broadcast, I experience those mild micro-stutters again. I couldn't figure out what is causing this or how to fix it if it can be resolved.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Discussion Remote control Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen from outside the home?

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m looking for a way to remotely control my parents’ Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen while I’m away from home.

I’d like to be able to see/control the TV Box over the internet and fix issues for them without requiring them to do anything.

Has anyone found a working solution for this? RustDesk, AnyDesk, TeamViewer, Tailscale, scrcpy, etc.?

Thanks!

Troubleshooting Issues with Apps

Upvotes

I posted about this earlier in the week, about having issues with our Google TV and the solutions offered didn't seem to do the trick. The set is about three years old at this point, maybe four. we've never really had an issue with it. But, recently, none of the apps would work except for Netflix. Now, that one doesn't work either. We've reset the TV back to factory settings and started over. That didn't solve the issue either. Every time we want to watch something on Hulu or AppleTV, we have to uninstall the app and re-install it. If we don't, the app simply won't open and says it can't open because of Error 95 or something along those lines. However, uninstalling and re-installing an app didn't work last night. These apps (Hulu, AppleTV, Netflix) work just fine on our iPads, phones, and computers. They just won't work on the TV for some weird reason. It's becoming a huge pain in the ass and I really don't want to get a new TV. The TV will also say that we're not connected to the internet (even though the router and modem is working fine on every other device) then it will click back in and say it's connected via Ethernet. This doesn't happen every time, just throwing it out there as a potential clue. Argh! I'm not even sure where to go to for help!

Troubleshooting Issues with casting videos from an Android browser

Upvotes

I have a Pixel 6a phone, Google Chromecast on one TV, Google 4K Streamer on another TV, and a Windows 11 laptop. If I play a video in my browser on my phone from a site that supports casting, for example Dailymotion, and try to cast it to either TV device, it's like the casting mechanism within the browser stalls or something. Nothing happens on the TV, but the Cast feature in the browser stops functioning. I have tried this on multiple browsers on my phone (Chrome, Edge, etc), same result. Aside from this, casting the same videos from within Chrome or Edge on my Windows laptop works fine, as does casting my phone's screen from the Home app, and casting from within dedicated apps. But in my specific use case I want to try to get the in-browser casting working again.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Discussion Which 4K 49-inch TV should I buy for Movies + PS5? Looking for Google TV OS

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m planning to buy a 49-inch 4K TV and would love some recommendations from people who have actually used these TVs.

My main use cases are:

🎬 Movies & OTT: Picture quality, HDR, contrast and good upscaling are important to me.

🎮 PlayStation: I want good gaming performance, low input lag and ideally features like 120Hz / HDMI 2.1 / VRR if available.

📺 OS: Google TV is a must — I don’t want other smart TV operating systems.

I’m currently confused between a few models/brands and would really appreciate recommendations based on actual long-term usage, especially from PS5/PS5 Pro owners.

Also, if there are any TVs I should absolutely avoid, please mention those too.
