Hey! I’m totally new to free diving and I had questions.. I’m 17 and got into free diving because of a college p-e free diving class and now I’m super interested in getting better but I had some serious questions..Is 2min 1sec good as a record time on dry land? And is a CO table a good way to increase that number?

We visited Rodrigues Island in December 2025, flying across from Mauritius, and spent some time exploring the underwater life around the island. We had previously visited Mauritius in December 2024, and from what I personally saw on both trips, Rodrigues felt noticeably healthier underwater.

One of my favourite places was Saint François Beach. The shallow seagrass areas were epic to snorkel over and full of interesting little animals and fish. I came across hermit crabs, little dragonfish, bat fish, horned boxfish, juvenile lionfish, porcupinefish and plenty of other reef life. The darker channel offshore was also amazing, with deeper blue water and schools of fish moving through it.

Another major highlight was Rivière Banane. You take a small boat from the beach out to the reef, and it ended up being one of the healthiest coral reefs I have personally seen. There was a huge amount of living coral, lots of soft coral, and most of the reef still appeared alive and in good condition.

What really stood out to me was the overall amount of marine life and the condition of the reef. Compared with what we saw around Mauritius in December 2024, the ocean around Rodrigues seemed to be in a much healthier state during our December 2025 visit.

Rodrigues also has great variety. You can spend time snorkeling over very shallow seagrass looking for smaller creatures, then head out to the reef and suddenly be surrounded by coral and schools of fish.
If you fly from Mauritius to Rodrigues, I would definitely recommend trying to book a daytime flight. Seeing the island, lagoon and reef system from above is incredible.

I absolutely loved Rodrigues. For snorkeling, underwater filming and marine life, it was one of the biggest surprises of the trip and somewhere I would definitely go back to.

Managed to break two Mares masks last week - those silicone buckle holders just snap after a while, especially if you're harsh on your gear. Is there a good alternative? My face is a bit neanderthal, big nose big brow ridge, so most masks don't fit me proper. I know Subea do one from the same mould but I don't like their rubber/silicone. And the frameless varieties distort my vision too much, which is tricky when you're a photographer. Happy to switch to single lens if necessary, comfort is more a priority as max operating depth is usually only 30-35 meters. No brand preference.

Has anyone here ordered divermon fins from AUS to the UK and know roughly how much the VAT will be when it arrives?

I’m just curious as I’d been waiting for ages for a restock of a certain pair of their fins and finally got my hands on some and then got an email saying about VAT and how they don’t cover it so wanted an idea of how much I’ll be paying.

I am due to fly out to Crete next week, although I would love to do some depth whilst there, my better half cannot safety me that deep.

We would be looking at some snorkelling and maybe some shallower depths (no deeper than 20m) and ideally not in a place with harsh current.

I have found a lot of the coast has accessible depth with a 500+ metre swim. Ideally would be looking for more of a shelf dive access like Dahab and not a graduated approach.

Additionally looking at a possible boat hire to access the depth easier. Recently picked up the M3ki and looking forward to testing it, safely!

I've been getting into freediving/spearfishing using only goggles and a spear gun. I've really come to see what all the gear is for lol; it would be such a luxery to 1. not have to lift your head/break line of sight to breath, 2. dive with proper boyancy and a full lung of air, and 3. be able to locomotate effectively under water without scaring rhe fish off.

That being said, it is definitely doable to spear fish with no gear (atleast here in eastern indonesia where there is coral reef), and I've been developing techniques to get around these limitations. Right now, I mostly will breath out maybe 50% before a dive, go down to 5 or 6 meters, making sure to passive drop that last meter or two to not scare fish, then grab onto a rock. If I have a target within range, I will push off the rock into range and then fire. I learned this from an indonesian guy who would go down to like 10m and lay at the bottom like a croc, dude was seriously impressive. Other times I will just drop around the crest of a rock and try to hit a target underneath it, or in shallower water breath out 100% and take a shot while I drop. Deeper shots I have the luxery of going down with a full lung of air, and maybe even slightly floating into position from underneath. Of course theres lots of different situations, and I find that what I can hit is basically limited to what will let me hit it, and alot of opportunitues are lost due to not having the gear to get in position.

I'm interested to hear if others here spear fish with no gear, and what techniques they have developed to be effective in their environment. I'm pretty new to this, and while I have been getting a bit of a groove, I know I still have alot to learn

I was reading that Schofield Richardson Pool on base had Island Divers teach Freediving there. I don’t know if this is still active BUT also wondering if anyone else knows on base OR off base pools that are Freediving/apnea workout friendly? Obviously always priority to be with buddy and train responsibly, but I feel like I am going crazy without pool training since I got back on island.

Hi everyone,
I’ve been learning freediving for about a year now. Unfortunately, I live pretty far from the sea, so I only get the chance to actually freedive for around three weeks a year when I’m on vacation.

On my last trip, I somehow managed to bite through my snorkel 😅 It wasn’t a huge loss since it was already pretty old and just a cheap Aqualung Super Dry snorkel, which wasn’t exactly ideal for freediving anyway.

I bought a Cressi snorkel while I was there, but unfortunately I really don’t like the mouthpiece. It starts hurting after a while and feels almost too small around my teeth. I can’t bite down on it comfortably and it keeps getting caught against my teeth, which gets annoying pretty quickly.

My current mask is a Scubapro Zoom. It’s okay, but sometimes it fogs up like crazy and I occasionally get water leaking in around my nose. Both are starting to annoy me enough that I’d rather replace it.

My fins are Tusa Liberator X-Ten, so as you can probably tell, my current setup isn’t really made for freediving. 😅 Since I’m going on another trip at the end of this month, I’d like to finally put together a proper beginner freediving setup.

My boyfriend has the Beuchat Mundial One 50 fins and I’ve tried them before. I actually really like them. They feel easy to handle even as a beginner, and I especially like that they’re not ridiculously long, since I need to fit everything into a suitcase when travelling.

At the moment I’m considering:
- Beuchat Maxlux S mask
- Beuchat Spy snorkel
- Beuchat Mundial One 50 fins

The Maxlux S seems to get pretty good reviews for comfort and fit, but I’ve also read quite a few comments about it fogging up a lot. Since that’s already one of the things driving me crazy with my current mask, I’m a little hesitant.
I also haven’t found that much about how comfortable the Spy snorkel mouthpiece actually is. After my experience with the Cressi, that’s something I definitely care about now.

Does anyone here use any of these, especially the Maxlux S or Spy snorkel? Would you recommend them for a beginner who mostly freedives while travelling?

I’m also completely open to other recommendations, especially for masks, snorkels or relatively compact freediving fins that are easy to travel with. Maybe there are things I haven’t even considered yet.

I have always been interesting in wanting to learn free diving. I finally have enough time and resources to spend on it.
Can someone advice me on how to start? I don't live near a waterbody so I have to start basic exercises in the pool itself.

What breathing exercise and technique do I start with, at what point should I sign up for a course?

I rly like holding my breath, parly because i think i am rly good at it.

I wanted to extend my record because why not, i dont free dive or anything but i love the concept and i do swim some times.

My record is currently 3:12 and i dont train, what i do before trying to break my record is, i breath slowly and deeply for like 5 minutes, then i hyperventilate right before going into the water (which i just found out you shouldnt do, at least is what the chatgpt says).

I asked chatgpt some tips and tricks and he gave me some stuff to do like CO2 tolerance tables, O2 deprivation tables the 4-7-8 methode and box breathing and breathing with your diaphram.

As you can see i have plenty of exercises but i have a important question.

Do i do these exercises every day? How much time should i do each exercise?etc.

Can some1 clear this stuff for me ?

Okay I would like to clarify that I am not in the continental U.S., but in Guam. I wanted to ask about anyone’s experience with ordering directly from leaderfins and how it was. I have read some “horror stories” saying that the quality control is 50/50.
