I visited Finland (From Australia) back in 2022 shortly after the world re-opened.
I like Architecture (Too bad Finlandia hall was covered for renovations) and theme parks (Taiga is actually one of the top roller coasters in the world)

Hiring a car was a bit expensive and I thought I would need it to visit some obscure locations, but in reality it was unnecessary and even though I only had about 5 days in Finland it was an exceptionally easy country to get around, I thought the quality of the trains was better than Japan, nicer stations, and surprisingly cheap tickets. Even had a chance to use the new tram system in Tampere and the new Metro extension too. Funny seeing the bright orange trains from that Boomfunk MC "Freestyler" song.

It is well known in theme park circles that a wealth Finnish businessman built his own racetrack and theme park in the middle of nowhere, and it was even possible to get one a train a day that would stop there and be met with a shuttle bus to the park.

Did also get to visit the Aalvar Alto studio and a ferry out to one of the islands for a bit of Finnish outdoors. The first Finn I met was in a sauna on the ferry from Stockholm!

Moi 🙏 im kindly seeking help as Im a final year international bachelor's student atm. I recently had an emergency where a huge chunk of my finances evaporated this semester. My money is getting tight and i badly need to find a job but despite tons of applications, the job market (vomit-inducing due to how many have said it i know) ain't exactly been on my side.

Warning to anyone in Finland looking for a PS5 Pro

If you're currently looking for a PS5 Pro, especially because you're waiting for GTA 6, please don't pay €1,000–€1,400 for a used console on Tori.fi.

There is currently a global shortage of physical PS5 Pro consoles, and some sellers on Tori.fi are taking full advantage of it. They are asking ridiculous prices for used consoles simply because they know people are desperate to get one before GTA 6.

Don't feed the scalpers.

The situation will change. Most major electronics retailers in Finland are expected to receive PS5 Pro stock before the end of the year, and new consoles should become available at much more reasonable prices, roughly €850–€950.

A used PS5 Pro is simply not worth €1,100–€1,400. Depending on its age, condition, warranty and included accessories, a reasonable second-hand value is closer to €600–€700 at most.

If you're buying one specifically for GTA 6, there's absolutely no reason to panic-buy now.

Wait.

Don't let the current shortage and GTA 6 hype convince you to pay hundreds of euros extra to someone who is simply exploiting the shortage.

Don't reward the scalpers. Let them keep their overpriced consoles. Normal supply will eventually return.

This time I went looking for black trumpets (Craterellus cornucopioides) but I just could not leave all those poor golden chanterelles alone in the woods. Half of my loot is chanterelles and half is black trumpets with just a few yellowfeet. Fun fact, the chanterelles discolored overnight when they were in the same basket with the black trumpets. There will be part three later when the funnel chanterelles get bigger.

Funny winged creature above reminds of the illustrations created by Tove Jansson for "The Hobbit" though I doubt there was anything exactly alike in her drawings... Thanks in advance!

Some months ago PS was around 10%, now they are again at 16,3% while Kok. stayed pretty stable. How come that the far-right government that has until now not the best results in term of unemployment and social cuts, is gaining again? What are the topics that drive the elections this time?

It seems like it will be interesting coalition negotiations for now.

Hi everyone!
This summer, a few friends and I travelled around Finland by car, from Helsinki all the way up to Levi. We had an amazing time, and at some point we became curious about Sahti after watching the film "100 litraa sahtia".

We wanted to try it while we were in Finland, but finding it turned out to be surprisingly difficult.
The only place where we actually found sahti was near Nokia, in an Alko shop. It was a canned "Tumma" version, dark and carbonated, and it was stored at room temperature rather than in the fridge.

Everywhere else we looked — including Oulu and Rovaniemi — we couldn't find it even in Alko. What surprised us even more was that, when we asked the staff whether they had Sahti, they sometimes looked at us a little strangely, as if we were asking for something unusual.

From what we have understood since then, traditional Sahti is actually unfiltered, uncarbonated and perishable, so it needs to be kept refrigerated and doesn't last very long. This made us wonder whether there are essentially two different types available: the traditional, naturally uncarbonated Sahti, and carbonated/canned versions such as the Tumma we found.
We also read that Sahti apparently can't be sold online in Finland, and that the Sahti produced in Estonia is similar but isn't shipped outside Estonia.

So, we'd love to understand a few things from people who know more about it:
is our understanding correct that there are both traditional uncarbonated Sahti and carbonated/canned versions?
is the canned "Tumma" version we found significantly different from traditional Sahti, or is it basically the same style with carbonation added?
and most importantly: is there anywhere online where I could buy the canned "Tumma" Sahti (or something similar) and have it shipped to Italy?

We really enjoyed discovering this Finnish speciality and would love to try it again.

In Finland, on the Z commuter train traveling from Lahti to Helsinki, a man, according to witness Juliana Musto, handed an approximately four-year-old girl a sticker of the Sinimusta Liike movement bearing the words “Sukupuutto vai paluumuutto”. The incident, she said, occurred near Mäntsälä. YLE News reports.

Musto said that the girl was traveling with her mother, who has a migrant background. When the man gave the child the sticker, Musto took it, tore it up and told the passenger that it was unacceptable to give such materials to a child. According to her, the man saw no problem with his actions and said that migrants “have no brains”.

According to Musto, the man complained to other people in his group about the torn sticker, while someone from the group filmed the situation. YLE notes that it was unable to independently verify the details of the incident from sources other than Musto’s testimony.

The child’s mother’s reaction

The girl’s mother asked Musto what had happened, as she initially thought the sticker was a lid from a yogurt package. She became upset and thanked Musto for intervening. According to the witness, a young woman with a migrant background who was in the carriage also reacted emotionally to the event and began to cry.

Musto, who was born in Finland and whose parents are of Kurdish origin, said that the incident made her concerned about children’s safety. She stressed that children have the right to grow up in a safe environment.

Expert advice

Nora Dadi, a family work and equality specialist at the Familia organization, said that reports from families and the organization’s work have shown that cases of racism against children are becoming more frequent. According to her, such cases used to come to light a few times a year, but now they occur almost every month.

Dadi noted that a child may not understand the meaning of a racist message but may sense from adults’ reactions that something serious, wrong or frightening has happened. She advised reporting racist harassment to the police and, on public transport, also to the carrier or transport staff. After an incident, adults should explain to the child in an age-appropriate way that they did nothing wrong and are safe, she said.

I can't do much about the fact that some people are idiots but treating kids like this is the new low. Fuck these people and fuck this man in particular.

I'm from sweden. I have a finnish mom and we used to visit Finland often when I was a child. I've eaten hundreds of karjalanpiirakka but I'm ashamed to say... I don't know anything about Karelia.

1. I want to learn about the history. Are there any Swedish or English resources or documentaries where I can learn the basics? Preferably not wikipedia.
2. How do people living in the region feel about their identity? Do people in Karelia feel neither Russian nor Finnish, but simply "Karelian"? Or is the cultural and societal border the same as the physical border?
3. Are some people upset about the border being closed? Or was the border already very strict before the war, so it didn't make that much of a difference?

Some kind of hook or securing mechanism, but how to use it and what for?

Is it good idea or bad idea? what is usual forecast of fresh snow.

Because I don’t buy the non-sexual part fully. I sort of get what you mean in some sense. I grew up with that vibe when we all shared a cabin on a trip, etc.

It’s good to have people be equals.

But what if you go to the sauna with the love of your life’s new partner and you are still in love with your ex? Are you really not feeling worse once you see that person naked or could have access to look?

Or what if you are in a friend group that goes together and you know someone has had a crush on you for a long time, but you don’t like them, are you weirded out that they can now see you naked?

Or let’s say you have a major crush on someone who doesn’t notice you and you’re all going in a group, how can you not look?

Edit: thank you all for explaining! It’s a strawman (deliberately absurd premise to try to understand) and I get it now. I was reading a lot of other posts saying it’s not sexual and blah blah blah and I get it now!

Edit 2: A lot of things online imply everyone saunas with everyone like a big happy family. Seems like it’s more intentional.
