Social Interaction First actual bad experience at the LGS. Why is politics in everything.

I also have to ask, i know Jack is a straight up ass hole. But am i also the AH in this situation?

I've been playing magic since Beta and Unlimited packs were on the store shelves still. I took a long break during college and my 20's but came back about 10 years ago. While I've had my fair share of annoying people or people with a chip on their shoulder I wouldn't consider any of them truly negative till yesterday.

I bounce around to a few stores throughout the week but this happened at the main store i normally play at. I'm sitting down with someone i normally play with. Were friends in the sense we like to play together but not like "come over to my house or hang out" type of friends outside of the store. This persons name is Sky and she is trans.

Were waiting for others, a new player sits down with us then a few minutes later another player I've seen a few times sits down to be our forth. Well call them Jill and Jack. While the game was nothing special just a normal battle cruiser game what Jack did was beyond anything I've ever experienced from anyone while playing magic.

Jack easily had 100+ power on the board with trample and haste. Nothing any of us could do about it. Jack starts looking at life totals and its clear that two of us are dead but one person will remain as he does not have enough to get all of us.

Jack starts his "Humm who should i kill" He's looking at what we have and board state then it happens he looks at me and is like "Who did you vote for?"

Me: "What's that have to do with anything? Just attack who you think is the biggest threat."

Jack: "Nah, I'm definitely going to attack you and He surely didn't vote for trump since he's one of them so ill attack him too" (Referring to Sky)

Right after that i could see how uncomfortable Sky was, the new player is kind of just looking at the floor like "WTF did i just hear" and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the table for what i just heard.

I went off on the guy. I tell him to STFU and that shit is not cool or welcome here. I'm straight up yelling at the guy to pack his shit up and GTFO. Thankfully other tables heard what he said and it was clear to him he had no others who were going to back him up on his BS. I'm bitching him out the whole time he's putting his stuff away. The LGS owner came over to see what was going on. Jack wouldn't explain anything to the owner and i was so heated at this point i couldn't do anything other than continuing to tell Jack to GTFO.

I've never seen someone pack up so quickly. He grabbed his stuff and was gone in under a minute. I did calm down and explain everything to the owner. Jack will never be allowed back but i also got a warning after from the owner to just bring things like that to him and he'll take care of it. I apologized to him and the people that were playing last night.

We finished the game as if Jack never existed. Jill rolled us both with an unstoppable flying army of 1/1 fairy tokens buffed to 10/10's.

Edit: Thanks everyone for your kind words. I don't tolerate that BS and I'll be sure if it ever happens again at the table to handle it a bit better rather than possibly ruining other peoples night's by yelling.

Wasn't the politics I was expecting

But good on you for telling that guy off, that shit doesn't belong at the game table. A warning well earned, people like that think they can "get away with it' becuase they think people won't speak against it.

u/BoldestKobold The Derpy Mothman Sep 24 '25

that shit doesn't belong at the game table.

That shit doesn't belong at ANY table.

My great uncle used to quip "if you gotta do it bent over I don't wanna hear about it at the table" then 'innocently' clarify that he obviously meant prayer and voting—

u/Collective-Bee Sep 25 '25

Idk why he had to clarify that sex was still acceptable conversation.

Thanks i 100% agree. Even typing that out and thinking about it. I'm still shocked someone would come out to play magic and think saying something like that would be acceptable.

That’s why it’s important that OP did what he did. If Jack pulled that shit with no push back, he would probably start bringing those shitty friends to that shop, and Sky (and any other non-shitty people) would have to find a new place to play.

u/CodeRed97 Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

There’s a common thing in the punk subculture that if your bar/venue tolerates nazi punks, then it will become a nazi bar.

Same deal here. If you tolerate people who can be that shitty to others then they’ll bring their friends who do the same shit and next thing you know, they run the place.

(Edit: wanted to clarify that this was about Nazis and not just skinheads in general as people have pointed out SHARP and other antifascist skins are prevalent.)

u/NamedTawny Golgari Sep 24 '25

Hey, skinheads are fine, and most of them are very strongly antifa.

It's the nazi shitheads you need to keep out of the bar, not the skins.

u/PandaCat22 Sep 24 '25

Are you from the UK?

The connotation of "skinhead" is very different between the US and UK. In the US, Skinheads are a white supremacist group (like the ones depicted in the film American History X)

u/GreyHuntress Mardu Sep 24 '25

In the US, skins are still a thing as well. Literally go to any Ska, street punk, crust, or Oi! show, and you'll see them hanging out, being awesome.

The general public thinks that boneheads and skins are the same thing because most people don't know anything about punk culture, let alone skinhead culture.

u/NamedTawny Golgari Sep 24 '25

I'm from Canada. And grew up around punk culture in the 90s and beyond.

I know a LOT of anti racist skins from the US (I liked my hair too much to be a skinhead). There's definitely both types though, absolutely.

Which is why it's important to call out the Nazis for what they are. (It would be like claiming that "feminists" are anti -trans because of the existence of TERFs. You want the good feminists and skinheads around; they're our allies)

u/NamedTawny Golgari Sep 24 '25

(and the common story that the previous commenter was talking about talks specifically about Nazis, which is why I wanted to clarify)

u/CodeRed97 Sep 24 '25

Edited my post to be more clear about that, yes.

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

[deleted]

u/PandaCat22 Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

Absolutely, and I'm not arguing otherwise. But the connotation to the US public when you use the word is such that most people are going to think of white supremacists rather than righteous punks.

It's like libertarian being coopted in the 70s and now it means "right-winger who wants to abolish age of consent laws" rather than an anarchist like Nestor Makhno, as it originally meant.

It stinks when a term is taken over by bad people, but we just have to work within the reality of popular connotation of words.

I particularly like how calm he remained in the face of such insurmountable hate. So much better than the guy I saw this happen to when another guy called him Maga trash because of his reagan/bush 84 shirt and was screaming at him. That guy actually had the nerve to tell him to "please calm down, we're just trying to play a game". Store owner actually kicked out the guy that called him out. Never going to that store again.

Tbf, I'm pretty sure like anywhere they're just an excessively loud minority. There's at least some reasonable discussion on there so long as you manage to avoid catching the attention of the chronically online section of the community that obsesses over finding a way to blame every problem with magic on trans people for some reason 🤦🏻‍♀️

u/lmboyer04 Control Player Sep 24 '25

You made the right call for sure. Could you have handled it better? Maybe, but it’s also not possible to ask people to act without emotion when they’re feeling upset. The warning you got is just that, so as long as you’re normally not exploding at people you’re doing more good than bad

u/pr3mium Sep 24 '25

Imagine it in other context.

Asks if you support Israel or Palestine. Then picks out a Jewish kid and says "Clearly you support Israel". Or imagine saying "You clearly support Genocide, I'm going to attack you". Politics don't belong in the politics of EDH. lol

u/Eaglest2005 Sep 26 '25

The funny part is that a jewish kid is less likely to support israel than a white christian in the first place 💀

u/ThatRenaissanceBear Sep 24 '25

u/RobGrey03 Sep 24 '25

The owner of our LGS would have told him off.

u/EcologyLover69 Sep 24 '25

The warning was so worth it because OP let any closeted (or out) member of the LGBTQ community that was there know that the shop is a safe space for them to play games.

u/Malkavon Sep 24 '25

This is such a key point. Outspoken allies are what help ensure people feel comfortable in such a space. Now all the LGBT+ players in that LGS know that at least one other person there has their back with full-throated support and conviction.

u/dafunkywhiteguy Sep 24 '25

I should preface this with im in a fairly happy marriage so im not looking for anything. There's a very attractive younger girl that works at my LGS and ive had to interject when men are being super fucking sleezy towards her. Her boyfriend works at the LGS too, but rarely the same shift, so ill very often throw out the "Oh Jane, where's your boyfriend? I wanted to show him a new card I got?" (Made up name for example)

I have had to actually confront 2 guys about how they were talking to her because shes become a friend and it made her uncomfortable.

OP addressed them as Jill and Jack. I guess, in my mind, I inferred Jack and Jill as being a package deal (considering the nursery rhyme!). XD

u/EtalonduQ Dimir Sep 25 '25

No matter where you're from, that's the right position. We have a few queer and trans ppl coming at my lgs, someone talking like Jack would leave the shop without any need to touch the ground at light speed.

I don't think I'll ever understand shitheads like that who try to start fights with people.

u/Emotional_Honey8497 Sep 24 '25

The thing is he probably didn't think he was starting a fight.  Probably spends most of his time with people who think like him.  You start to think that everyone agrees with you.

Not to say that makes it any better in the slightest.  Even worse actually, to be so bold in your hatred you assume other people will back you up or shrug it off.

Hopefully OP scared him enough that he won't bring that shit up in public again.  Even with the support of other players, i wouldn't be suprised if it left the trans individual (among others) shaken up.

I think it's naive to think this one experience will change his thinking but we can hope for that too.  Maybe a stepping stone at least.

u/HereForTheBoos1013 Sep 24 '25

Even most of them usually clam up when in the presence of a member of their despised group.

u/XelaIsPwn Grixis 4 Life Sep 24 '25

I find it extremely hard to believe that he thought someone who was visibly trans "thought like him." My guess is the exact opposite - he's used to saying inflammatory shit online and getting away with it. Either that, or (considering he was new) he knew hew probably wouldn't get away with it, but wanted to see if he could, anyway - like a toddler experimenting with boundaries.

u/Emotional_Honey8497 Sep 24 '25

Lmao yeah dude obviously he wouldn't think the trans person would agree with him.  But thought maybe bringing the edge and singling someone out would help him bro out with the others.

u/nimbusnacho Sep 24 '25

Idk, in my experience people like that thrive off the attention and thinking they're 'owning' people because they only process that they see an emotional reaction and therefore 'won'. Just under developed emotional intelligence and taught to believe that being a human troll means that they're alpha or some shit.

It's entirely possible to do the right thing but at an unnecessarily loud volume.

From the perspective of an owner/operator, heated events are a problem for business. Anger can drive away customers, and violence can cause law enforcement to get involved, which is always a headache.

But from a human and personal level, sticking up for another human being from judgmental crap is a good thing. I don't know you, but I'd be happy to have someone like you in my pod.

(Also, as an aside, I briefly misunderstood what you meant be politics at first as my pod uses that term to describe "If I overextend to kill Player A this turn, will you not attack me while I'm defenseless next turn?" kind of behavior.)

u/boomgoesthecat Sep 24 '25

"If I overextend to kill Player A this turn, will you not attack me while I'm defenseless next turn?"

This is the type of "Politics" i like in my commander games. Making deals and such is part of the game.

Expelling bigots should be done at volume.

It reduces the possibility of other people accidently playing with bigots by mistake.

Now people who want to play with bigots must actively choose to. As is their right.

But I, a bystander, demand the right to know if the people in the gamestore I am bestowing my business with, is frequented by bigots.

It will impact my willingness to spend my money there.

u/Misanthrope64 WUBRG Sep 24 '25

... it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal

u/greenearrow A little of everything Sep 24 '25

I disagree with the “ideal world” comment. Of course, in an ideal world it wouldn’t have had to have happened. In this world, you stood up for someone when they were clearly being targeted for who they were. The store owner wants you to bring it to them, but the outright rejection of the premise they pushed was the right thing to do. You get to have big feelings, we need to make those people uncomfortable to espouse hate. The store owner wasn’t wrong to give you a warning. You weren’t wrong to do it once, and if you do it twice and get kicked out, you and the store owner still aren’t wrong. Conviction has to exist even in the face of consequences.

You and Sky would be welcome at my house. Jack would not.

u/Itsdawsontime Sep 24 '25

You did the right thing defending a close acquaintance of yours.

As you mentioned you hit up a few gaming stores, watch out for Jack at the other ones now. I would not go to the store owner and tell them right away if you see them as it’s a “he said / she said” situation, and would be cautious to tell it to other players that you’re not close with as perpetuating a “rumor” (even if true, but again outside perspective for the other people).

I cannot imagine bringing politics to the table, even in passing. Just straight up being like "I'm going target the people that didn't vote the way I did" in a game that is kind of a lot about escapism and having fun is just...yikes. I'd say get a hobby but like maybe he shouldn't have one if he's going to bring politics into it.

u/OopsMyNoobisShowing Sep 24 '25

Right... like "i voted for whomever you didn't because I want to be as far from being like you as possible.."

u/MathematicianVivid1 Sep 25 '25

Keep in mind these are the same people that will complain and say “why do you have to bring politics into things” when it’s not something they worship.

u/Eaglest2005 Sep 26 '25

I mean, I could see discussions about it with a friendly table being understandable, but yeah even as a somewhat hardcore leftist myself I couldn't imagine bringing up "So, who did you vote for?" at a public table if some context of the conversation didn't at least already make it relevant.

u/Alternative_Dot7769 Sep 24 '25

NTA 100%

They are getting so brazen with their horrid views. Way to stand up for someone in a tricky position, great example of being an ally and a decent person. It’s better you stood up for her than her being on her own to defend herself.

I’d rather people like Jack be shamed and ridiculed than put up with for the sake of staying civil. If people are openly racist, homophobic, or transphobic, I’m fine with making them very uncomfortable and letting them know that’s not cool with me. Had a similar experience where a family member’s partner made transphobic comments about the waitress, and I “made a scene” about telling them how rude and hurtful they were being.

u/DoubleJumps I've got a bad feeling about this... Sep 24 '25

100% the reason that these people are so emboldened now is that we were too polite about this bullshit for too long.

I'm pretty adamant that I don't mind talking politics, but debating about human rights, or denying someones existence, racism, bigotry, sexism, etc. Are NOT politics. And someone pushing them as they are is trying to normalize hate.

Tariffs, taxes, border disputes, zoning, healthcare, military, etc. Sure, whatever, as long as you aren't being obstinate about it and disturbing the game.

u/Asceric21 Sep 24 '25

Yeah, gaming is meant to be inclusive. People are welcome to curate their own groups and play on their own private property if they want to be racist and bigots.

Only part I disagree with is that Healthcare shouldn't be political. All people should have access to life saving care regardless of background or means. Medical bills causing bankruptcy is straight up dystopian.

u/Prism_Zet Sep 24 '25

Oh for sure, I don't think that's a debate, I'm Canadian lol, the paid healthcare thing is a very different story in the US. More like, talking about medicine, taxes/insurance, dental etc.

u/Asceric21 Sep 24 '25

Gotcha, I'm US, so when someone mentions healthcare being political, I like to point out how much people here pay into a terrible terrible system and barely get anything out of it in return. Our insurance is literally paying for the privilege to not be bankrupt if we happen to need major surgery. And even then, it still sometimes does.

Which is what happens when you privatize something that has no upper value to individuals (their health).

Edit: This is off topic now for the subreddit though, so while I will happily read/upvote any response and notes you want to make, I will not be responding. But thank you for taking time to converse, even if only briefly.

u/Eaglest2005 Sep 26 '25

Yeah it is unfortunate how even once you get past identity "politics" you have to deal with the fact that "congrats, we've agreed that you deserve the same rights as anyone else. Those rights do not include guaranteed access to any of the basic requirements of survival (food, water, shelter, and to a "lesser" extent healthcare), good luck!"

It's wild that in america, of all places, we've decided that actually, "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" aren't rights at all, at most maybe liberty being a conditional "right" when it's literally right at the start of the second paragraph of the fucking declaration of independence (right after "we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal") 😭

I absolutely do not think it's over the top to shout at people for being like this in public. People are so brazen with their bigotry and they ought to know to shut their fucking traps

This person vocally singled out a trans person at their table. This is the kinda thing that makes trans people, a group multiple fold more likely to be the victims of hate-based physical and sexual violence than many other groups, feel afraid for their safety and security at a location.

There's no place that tolerates transphobia that can also tolerate trans people. Same with racism. Same with homophobia. Fuck anyone who comes out with this shit.

u/Knickerbottom Sep 24 '25

u/dis_the_chris Izzet Gang Sep 24 '25

I think it's fair to say, if I was in the shoes of the business owner, that people making a huge scene doesn't provide context -- for a passive observer, this could look like the store just watched a mean guy harass someone else into leaving without consequences, which is why a business owner would probably prefer you not to blow up and would rather you let them know and let them handle it from their position of authority in the company

I find that understandable

But I also think nonetheless that there's no room for bigotry in magic the gathering and nobody should feel comfortable or tolerated when making bigoted comments at the table.

u/WantedOne Sep 24 '25

It's the type of warning where its like "yeah, you were right, but also a bit over the top"

Would it be further actioned...probably not. It is important to set the precedent that stuff like that should indeed be handled by staff.

u/Eaglest2005 Sep 26 '25

To me the fact that the bigot got banned while op just got a warning makes it feel more like a "look, good call, definitely don't want someone like that hanging around making people uncomfortable like that, but the way you went about it was still pretty disruptive so try to handle it a bit more gracefully if something like that happens again."

u/boomgoesthecat Sep 24 '25

I did. After Jack left and i calmed down a bit. I did stand up and say sorry for how i acted. Only two people were like "We get it, thanks." most people didn't say anything at least out loud.

u/OrganicAd5536 Sep 24 '25

Awesome, yeah honestly you did it right especially with this addendum; some people will say it's best to consult with the victim of a targeted action first instead of immediately trying to confront the attacker, but in situations like this where you're seeing it happen in front of you there's not really a chance for that (plus, the condemnation doesn't really land if it's separated by time).

I do not think you should feel bad for your volume or tenacity; you delivered the kind of swift kick in the pants antisocial and bigoted jackasses like him need and you apologized for the discomfort it may have caused onlookers. I hope you checked in with Sky to make sure she felt okay.

I wish every table had someone like you at them and that I have the good fortune to play a game with you one day.

Its understandable that the store owner told you to let them handle it in future but moments like that where you fight for someone with that much conviction can mean more than you know.

u/TheeRatKing Sep 25 '25

Nah fuck that.

Dude targets someone because they’re a shithead transphobe, you 100% did the right thing and he’d have been immediately 86ed from my LGS too.

u/Treereme Sep 24 '25

NTA. The owner wants it handled quietly because he's trying to maintain the status quo and keep the business of people who think like Jack but aren't as vocal. Your public outrage clearly shows that Jack's behavior is unacceptable and it is the right way to handle behavior like his. The status quo is unacceptable, and so is maintaining it.

It also shows your support for the people sitting next to you and explicitly reassures them that they are welcome. Thank you for being a good person!

u/Tywele Golgari Sep 24 '25

You are the kind of person I wish to have at my table if something like that were to happen to me.

u/potatoZMaster Sep 24 '25

“Who did you vote for” mfw I thought you were talking about like a will of the council card 😭😭

u/comixfanman Sep 25 '25

I don't know this particular store owner, but I think it had to be handled this way. Others have mentioned that it lets other players know there is a safe environment.

A lot of store owners would have tried to handle it quietly, in which case the player may have been able to convince others that you were the AH in this situation and they were the victim. I think it's safer for the community to have had this person called out publicly.

u/boomgoesthecat Sep 25 '25

Update for anyone interested.

Jack does view this subreddit or at least was sent the link to this post by someone. He's not happy about it. He blew up our stores Discord chat with all sorts of hateful political garbage and asking i get banned from the store as well. I wasn't able to witness the meltdown but a friend told me he went on for about 15-20 minutes before the store owner could get on and ban then delete all his messages.

I've received a bunch of wonderful messages from so many of you, thank you! Sorry if I haven't gotten back to you. I've also been receiving a bunch of hateful messages as it seems this was taken over to another subreddit called Freemagic that i can only assume is just right wing nut jobs. I've stopped even going into my message requests for the time being.

Anyway you all are awesome, thanks for the positive vibes. Have a wonderful day everyone. May your hand always have lands and spells to cast.

He forgot to add the part where everyone clapped and rainbows came out of the sky.....

u/airbudairpodtidepod Sep 24 '25

Attacking a person in a game just because they don’t agree with a political view is a loser mentality and also from your description they just sound like a try-hard. Might not have been the best to yell however I would’ve done the same and I very much applaud you for confronting someone on their bullcrap in defense of someone that gets so marginalized on a daily basis. You’re very awesome.

u/Yarius515 Sep 24 '25

Bigotry is not politics. It has been politicized so certain ppl can say “don’t get political” about a human rights issue to more easily sweep it under the rug.

But yeah, other than that, agreed 💯

u/airbudairpodtidepod Sep 24 '25

Oh yeah agreed. I only said politics because OP did.

Making fascists, white supremacists, homophobes and transphobes feel unwelcome in public spaces is a civic duty. Well done OP.

u/ProblemAlternative41 Sep 24 '25

Just goes to prove these types of people are wimps, glad to see this happen. Good on you dude, and thank you for standing up to someone like that. Hope the loser never plays magic again.

u/pyrangarlit Sep 24 '25

If we are to have a society that embraces tolerance and acceptance of others different than ourselves, the one thing we cannot tolerate or accept is intolerance.

I, for one, not only think you're not an asshole, I thank you for standing up for others. I understand that the store owner would prefer to handle these situations themselves and that's certainly their prerogative. But we need more people willing to immediately call out and reject bullshit like you experienced with Jack.

Well done.

u/TheDUDE1411 Sep 25 '25

See, I thought this was gonna be a post bitching about politics in commander. Was not expecting this

u/CelesTheme_wav Sep 25 '25

The world needs more people like you. Yeah you technically should have gone to the owner, but I think I'd have gone off too if someone disrespected my trans friend that way.

u/corax1988 Sep 25 '25

That's not politics and we need to stop calling it that. I understand why it's called that but it's not at all. That's like calling racism a political view. Transphobia is wrong and if you can't stand to be around trans people then stay out of spaces they are in. You did the right thing and even though you got heated I feel you were justified. If he said some super sexist stuff and you yelled at him, would you have gotten in trouble, probably not. We need to stop sugar coating things for these people and let them know what they are doing is vile and disgusting, and you did. Cheers mate. If I could, I'd buy you a beer! I hope that guy gets what he deserves.

u/CliffBronco Sep 25 '25

I would have done the same thing. I'm glad you yelled at him. Hopefully enough that he felt a bit of embarrassment. If the store owner told him politely to leave.. he probably would just continue his behavior elsewhere. Im glad you blew up his spot

u/Commorrite Sep 25 '25

Jack will never be allowed back but i also got a warning after from the owner to just bring things like that to him and he'll take care of it. I apologized to him and the people that were playing last night.

LGS owner has to do this, you lost control in his establishment.

Nothing will ever come of it, bet that warning isn't even written down.

u/superkp Sep 25 '25

When one member of the party is attacked, the whole party rolls initiative.

When you see someone that needs an ally, become and accomplice.

u/Cronogunpla Sep 25 '25

You defended someone who is in your community. You are certainly not the asshole here.

u/staxringold Sep 25 '25

Like most of these "who is in the right here?" threads, you are right and they were wrong (and assholes too). Maybe maybe your response was overly-fiery (impossible to know as outsiders, but if the owner gave you a warning also then maybe) but it's also completely understandable (and, as others have said, probably worth it, to remind your friend and anyone else that you clearly have their back).

Politics is really a dull subject to inject into most non-political discussions (as you'll seldom convince someone of anything in a casual discussion), but it's especially silly/uncomfortable at a game table. It'd be bad enough to use it as a silly tiebreaker on who to attack, but that would maybe just be cringey. But the misgendering and 'one of them'? Fuck 'em. That's not politics: that's just being an asshole.

u/AeonHeals WUBRG Sep 25 '25

As a trans woman (who also happened to go by Sky for a while), thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Also I hope that guy hits his little toe in every single piece of furniture he encounters from now on.

u/BoyMeatsWorld Sep 25 '25

As others have said, you did nothing wrong. Good for you. But also, the owner had to give you that warning just to kinda keep order. You're like Batman. The police can't just outright endorse you going vigilante on the bad guys, but they're grateful for what you do.

The way everything went down, people know that bigotry will get them cussed out and people also know that loud outbursts are gonna catch a warning. It's a win for everyone.

u/PokekingsOfficial Sep 25 '25

No part of our life is impervious to the division that politicians have created in this country unfortunately. Sad. good on you. LGS should be a place where everyone feels welcome regardless of whom they voted for.

u/RatKingJosh Sep 26 '25

We need more people shutting down crap like that. As soon as they figure they can get away with it they only get worse.

And tbh given past situations, I’d rather someone over-the-top loudly say something in shock than stay completely quiet or let it go.

u/unseine Oct 21 '25

I assume everybody clapped afterwords too.

u/ExtraBratwurst Sep 24 '25

What's worse is that everyone here seems to believe this isn't some fantasy.

u/matt-ratze Sep 25 '25

OP did not present any proof that the story is real but neither did you or anyone else claiming it was fantasy present any proof for your position. Why should I believe you?

u/That_GareBear Sep 24 '25

In a ND hick town I say down to play for the first time. The morbidly obese guy across the table asked me "did you vote for Trump or are you retarded?"

I was stunned. I just started packing my shit and was like "I guess I'm retarded" and left. I went home and checked out the game store on Facebook and wasn't too surprised to learn that they had a major racism problem.

Some people's kids, man.

As a trans person who is frankly terrified to socialize in my area because of how conservative it is, thank you for standing up to that absolute asshole. I can’t tell you how scary it is out here for us right now, trans women especially (I’m FTM and generally pass fairly well so I am truly blessed in that regard and I am still fucking terrified) so what you did really and truly means a lot to me as a stranger and to your friend I’m sure it means even more

A mild roller-coaster on this one.

At first I was thinking Government Politics.

Then I was thinking "playing polotics" at the table only for it to reaffirm itself as Government Polotics, like—

Yeah, no, fuck that guy.

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

You mean a maga creature was surprised their BS doesn't fly in real life where consequences exist?

Must have forgot he wasn't anonymous sitting there in the LGS, hiding behind some "warrior" trope username.

Nah, youre 100% in the right. People like that need to be humiliated. They could have learned basic decency the easy way, but they chose the hard way.

u/neoPie Sep 25 '25

Thank you man. Yes, maybe you acted a bit hot headed but in a world, where people seem to lack the back bone to do anything but stand idle and look or film on their smartphones when something bad happens, we need more courageous people with dignity.

I have many opinions on politics but you never bring that shit to a hobby no matter what it is

u/Evilmanta Sep 25 '25

u/teh1337penguin Sep 25 '25

NTAH.

Bigots have no place at the table.

u/lvgarrett Sep 25 '25

Good on you bro. You did the right thing and we shouldn’t let bigots feel comfortable with just being hateful.

u/RathielintheRun Sep 25 '25

Good on you. No one should have to endure this kind of bullshit anywhere. And unfortunately, our hobby has more than its fair share of people in it that are willing to bring this kind of bigotry to the table, so thank you for standing up.

u/Pimpdaddyfrogface Sep 25 '25

This isn't politics. Sure, it's tied to it but this is just being a shit human or not. Good on you for standing up and saying something. We need more people holding dipshits like that accountable. Politics is "what if we diverted funds from one govt dept to another" what he did isn't that, even if he wants to hide behind it. We can have polite disagreements but that goes so far beyond it. Glad there are people like you around.

u/Cryc1x Sep 26 '25

I do agree that this Jack person was an AH. Real life politics has no place during a game. All it does is kill the vibes, and considering this is at a public place with random people rather than that guy's own personal pod, you had every right to be upset with that.

However, the way you worded your reaction really comes across as an over-exaggeration of the situation. Telling the guy to F off with that, and to STFU, that's fine. But screaming and yelling the entire time as he was already getting out to leave, yeah that's a bit much. He wasn't doing anything that warranted that level of escalation. You've already made your point, you won because he was leaving, but now you're getting the rest of the room involved as well. There just wasn't a need.

u/Destrina 50 and counting Sep 26 '25

Thanks for standing up for people like me!

u/First_Platypus3063 Sep 26 '25

You are an everyday hero! Standing up against bigotry and hate is always a right think to do! You can be proud of yourself you acted and haven't stayed silent! What you have done probably means a LOT to the person called a Sky, moro than you think likely!

u/aiphrem Sep 24 '25

I mean I completely understand your reaction. Magic nights are to escape from the bullshit of life and have fun slinging spells and spawning cool creatures, there's no room for that kind of bullshit at the table.

I'm not gonna judge your reaction because I'd also be pretty mad if someone started bringing that shit to the game table.

u/Jiggy724 Sep 24 '25

Sounds like someone that is chronically online in their own little bubble, and didn't realize that in the real world, most people aren't massive pieces of shit and won't be accepting of them either. Bringing up politics at a table with people you don't know is already questionable, but to actively insult someone for their political views/mere existence is absolutely ridiculous.

That went the way it should have for them.
