Discussion How do y’all deal with lying?

Upvotes

So I recently played a game of commander where I made a deal with a player to not attack them and drop their life total low in exchange for them not attacking me. Next turn they swung at me for 22 damage. Though I killed them on the crack back, I ended up losing that game to another player. And like, I’ve never broken a deal I’ve made. I’ve been somewhat smarmy with my wording choices but I’ve never gone “I know I said this but I lied.” The player laughed and said that it’s a game and betrayal is part of it. I was somewhat stunned, to be truthful. And while me and the player are friends and with no hard feelings, I’m curious. Do you guys play with lying on deals? Do you keep it sacrosanct? How do y’all do it?

Discussion What's a shockingly low ranking commander that you found.

Upvotes

I was looking at commanders on EDH rec for some inspiration and as a golgari/sultai player I was shocked to find how low [[Grakmaw, skyclave ravager]] only 544 decks! As well as [[Polukranos, unchained]] with only 388 deck! I feel like these cards have so much potential to be a fun commander I can't fathom that they're actually some of the lowest golgari ranked commanders aside from some partner pairings, [[iname as one]] is more popular than Polukranos? Really?

What are some commanders that you find shocking are ranked so low for their respective colour, not necessarily a deck you've built (although more than welcome) but just one you thought would be more popular?

Discussion Do you have a deck with a low creature count?

Upvotes

I noticed all my decks are creature heavy lists, it's giving me an itch to build spell slinger or anything with low creature counts. What's your low creature deck look like? Who's your commander? And now I'm typing to reach at least 250 characters. And there we go.

Question I am joining a Precon League, Winner gets points towards stuff. What Precon to go with?

Upvotes

Like the headline says I am joining a Precon league in a couple days, I have an untouched Necron Precon lying around, I know the World Shaper Precon is legit fire and the Jeskai Marvel precon is supposed to be deece. Which of these three should I go for? If not any of these three then which one?

Discussion What is your best “under the radar” high B3/ low B4 deck?

Upvotes

I'm looking for inspiration on decks that sit at high Bracket 3 / low Bracket 4 — the kind of build nobody at the table takes seriously until it's already too late.

Specifically I'm after low-curve, combat-oriented lists. No infinite combos, no out-of-nowhere "I win" turns — just a cheap, resilient board that shrugs off removal and closes the game through damage.

What are your favorite under-the-radar commanders for that? Bonus points if the deck looks harmless on turn three.

Discussion Is Draftsim kinda…bad?

Upvotes

When I first started playing commander about two years ago, I used Draftsim to get some ideas and knowledge about different commander archetypes. However, I feel like as I gain more experience, their assessments of certain cards and their power levels seem way off, to put it mildly. For the last couple of months I have basically been using Moxfield or Edhrec for ideas and guidance, because I felt that I was getting bad advice from DS. Am I the Seymour Skinner here, or is this a common experience? I just wanna verify that I’m not just terrible at gauging a card’s strength.

Discussion Which mana rocks are socially acceptable to proxy?

Upvotes

I want to add some ramp into my [[Arthur, Marigold Knight]] deck, but can’t afford to add much right now. I’m still fairly new to deck building and I’m not sure which mana rocks are helpful ramp, but are also acceptable to proxy. I don’t want to take the piss proxying silly expensive cards!

Deck Help Miku commander deck

Upvotes

Hey everyone I am the definition of a casual MTG player so I'm calling for so some help. I have all the miku secret lairs and was trying to put as many of those into the commander precon. I have already slotted in Elvish Mystic, command tower, sol ring and thespians stage. I was wondering if there were any easy cuts and which miku cards should go in their place in the deck which make sense. One i was looking at that seemed good was Miku font of pop.

Thanks!

Question How to counter landfalls deck in B3

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In my pod, some players are playing some strong lands matter/landfall commanders like Lord Windgrace, and I dont really know how to block them from having so much lands/recursion WITHOUT being an asshole and playing MLD in bracket 3. I personally hate stax decks, because most of the time it just sat down, restrain everyone then do nothing for 2 hours before *sometimes* win.

How could I counter this type of strategy without playing MLD (which isnt accepted in bracket 3 eitherway)

Discussion Horror "film" theme: Need help finding cards for this deck idea

Upvotes

I am rather inexperienced with MTG, so bear with me.

I am looking to make a "horror" deck that does not necessarily focus on cards with the horror type written on the card itself (although it is fine if it does have "horror" printed on it). I want cards that are reminiscent of horror movies. Things like scary clowns, possessed dolls, ghosts, creepy looking monsters, slashers, etc.

Cards I've found that whose art fits the theme well in my opinion are:

[[Juri, Master of the Revue]]

[[Giggling Skitterspike]]

[[Stuffy Doll]]

[[Creepy Doll]]

[[Marvin, Murderous Mimic]]

[[Abomination of Llanowar]]

[[Ad Nauseam]]

[[Bonehoard]]

[[Corpulent Corpse]]

[[Fleshtaker]]

[[Flesh Duplicate]]

I don't necessarily want to make a deck forcing the cards above, they are just to provide some idea of what I am looking for. I know this theme is super subjective, so apologies for the vagueness of this request. Ultimately, when playing this deck, I want players to be reminded of horror movies or horror "moments" in other genre movies the whole time. I don't want the cards to just be "that's creepy looking" if that makes sense lol.

My goal with this post is to find many cards with art that fit the bill and hopefully cobble together a viable mid-bracket 3 deck at least. Lastly, I know there are custom card art that can makes these cards look more like my theme, but I'd like to avoid those unless they are exceedingly cheap or the OG art is already close and the alt art just makes it a bit better.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Discussion How bad is the power creep in your LGS?

Upvotes

For me it's fascinating to see this in action. A store opened in my little town a couple of years ago and we have around 10 or so regulars that play there every other day.

They all started with interesting bracket 2 or bracket 3 decks, mostly precons with some changes.

After a couple of months, a handful of new people started going there and two of them had really powerful bracket 3 and bracket 4 decks.

They would demolish everyone else, and now everyone has insane bracket 4 decks (although they all claim it's bracket 3). The motto is "we like to play hard or else it's not fun".

It's gotten so ridiculous that most games don't even finish by killing the opponents, they finish maybe two or three rounds before that, usually because people give up or because someone declares that they will now win due to having two or more infinite combos on their battlefield.

In fact, I would say that the vast majority just play decks built around one or more infinite combos. Usually what happens is that someone will get salty because they lose all the time, upgrades their deck and the other people follow the same mentality. It's a constant nuclear arms race to the point where there are now people running near cEDH decks playing against lower brackets.

Finding a pod with bracket 2 or a low end bracket 3 is impossible. I'm maybe one of the handful of people that likes to play more casually and with lower brackets.

Talking about brackets is nearly impossible because most people don't know what they actually mean and just claims their decks are bracket 3. The LGS doesn't actually check the decks, which makes it hard to enforce bracket rules.

I've went to a bigger shop and there it's a bit better because the LGS has a guy that checks the decks and tells you which bracket it is, and they assign you to a table where there are only those brackets being played, but like I said, the power creep is also insane at that shop and most people just play with very strong decks

Is this the same everywhere else?

Discussion Does anyone play in the San Jose area?

Upvotes

I want to get a friendly pod together tomorrow. We can play at a LGS for our first meetup and then I can actually host at my place. (Food, drinks the stuff). I already know a few people, but ever since I’ve been working from home, I’ve had more time to get in games and want to get more acquainted with the format on a casual level.

I. Normally play cEDH (as to where my finances went for the game) but this is a great chance to jump into something more casual. You can post here, or shoot me a DM. Either or is welcome. Just expanding the community we already have over here. Thank you all for taking the time to read this post

Deck Help Rate my Tameshi deck

Upvotes

https://moxfield.com/decks/i4yDkWauEUiNnXmY8C9Uxw

This is a low bracket 3 [[Tameshi, reality architect]] deck, with a budget of 50 dollars. It's meant to be super casual, without any combos. It's a control/value deck, focused on using Tameshi to get card advantage, control the game, and make big artifacts in the endgame to close out games. Let me know what y'all think!

Question Stardew Valley Deck

Upvotes

Best ideas for a commander deck based around the Stardew Valley cards? (Preferably using all of the Stardew Valley cards). Mainly what would be the best them for the deck, and win-cons for it if anyone has any ideas. It looks like group hug or being based around food might be the best route to go, but would like to hear some opinions.

Deck Help ‘Mid-Range” Reanimator Deck Help -> Lands/Curve/Better Tech

Upvotes

Hey Y’all,

As the title suggests… looking for some help on this reanimator list that I’ve adjusted/toyed with for awhile. Link is below:

https://moxfield.com/decks/BVtHGeKqxUOt2Y5_NsToxw

First… yes, it’s a Terra deck. But it’s been completely taken apart from the Precon. I’ve worked on trying various low attack tech cards for awhile and have brewed into this list.

Before asking for my help/questions… I should give a bit of context into the deck’s goals and my general aim:

Deck’s Goals/Win-Con -> I generally want to play on curve turns 2-6 and drop value based threats. Best case scenario would be:

Turn 2: Play Creature/Ramp

Turn 3: Play Terra

Turn 4: Swing with Terra + play 2/3 Drop -> Revive something spicy

Turn 5: Apply more pressure with a board of bigger threats.

Turn 6: Either hold off an opponent from pushing into lethal or start building up some kind of aggro win-con/combo.

So, ideally we win via combat damage. The deck does have an 3 card infinite with Sac Engine + Broodmoth + Redcap. But the combo generally doesn’t fit our curve too well and is more of a turn 8-9 back-up plan.

So with all of this in mind…. The questions/help I need are:

1) Lands -> Should I be running more basics or finding some other untapped lands? Given how much I want to run to my curve… I feel like I have too many untapped lands. Any general land suggestions/changes would be amazing here.

2) Creature Curve -> Any thoughts/suggestions for the 2/3 cmc slots? I think I’m doing a good job of “eating my vegetables”, but any suggestions would be great. I’ve thought about Thalia for dealing with spellslinger decks, the new Queen of Dale to help with GY set-up, and maybe something like Anger for haste. But I’d love some ideas

3) Should I play the infinite combo? -> I don’t love the idea of an infinite combo… but aggro/mid-range piles do need a way to close out games. In addition, my current sac engines feel a bit clunky and don’t help with the general game-plan of the deck.

Thoughts on the infinite? Or is there a better win-con I’m not thinking of for this shell?

Any help/suggestion/feedback/etc would be great! Thanks all!

Deck Help Let me know what yall think of my Smaug, Wicked Worm deck!

Upvotes

Hey guys! Just started making my second deck, featuring [[Smaug, Wicked Worm]] as the commander. I have done some research looking at YouTube videos about the commander as well as looking at other decks on EDHREC and Moxfield. My goal is getting as many Treasure (or really any artifact) Tokens I can on the board to deal damage by them coming in, being sacked, or swinging big dragons. Below is my deck list let me know what you think! There are some cards that I know are great like [[Ancient Copper Dragon]] but I’m just not trying to use my rent money to pay for this deck lol.

Deck Help Dina, Essence Brewer help/tips.

Upvotes

Dina, Essence Brewer

I am looking to put together a deck for a friend of mine and I was hoping to get some input from you all on a possible B3 Dina deck. I don't usually ask for help but once I make this one, I won't be able to tinker or edit it once it has been gifted. So I would love feedback on this to get it as good as I can before it gets constructed. Thank you for any assistance in this.

Deck Help Halloween Themed Deck Help

Upvotes

A few of my friends are putting together Halloween themed decks this year, and I’m looking for advice on weaknesses of my Grist, The Hunger Tide | Creepy Crawlies deck. Some reference points:
- Bracket: B2-B3
- Budget: Not an issue, we will be using some proxies
- Card Choice: Trying to limit non-insect cards

The main idea for the deck centers on getting Grist out, using her +1 to start building tokens and milling cards. Then using other cards for extra mills, recursion, token generation, removal, etc. as needed. I may also swap in Zask as a secondary commander, since that seems like a pretty easy swap.

I haven’t played much commander, so I don’t have a great feel for the play speed or common tactics yet. It feels like whenever I play, I’m so lost in my own deck that I get destroyed out of nowhere by the other players. So I’m excited to know some of the weaknesses my deck has so I can plan ahead! Right now, I feel like the biggest weakness is graveyard hate?

Deck Help Flubs The Fool - Valakut

Upvotes

Been wanting to put together a Flubs deck for a while and, after scoping out other lists and looking through some general landfall cards, have currently settled on this list for now:

https://archidekt.com/decks/26188449/i_am_no_fool

The deck's main goal is to win with Valakut and a bunch of Valakut clones, but can also relatively easily go for combat via Scutes, Zombies, Tifa, Hydra, etc.

Would love any suggestions people have for any obvious techs I'm missing out on

Question Can Blood on the Snow steal Commanders?

Upvotes

In my Black Cat deck, I play [[Necromantic Selection]] which allows me (after an explanation of how SBA works) to reanimate and steal someone else's commander.

However, I'm not sure if the same applies to [[Blood on the Snow]], being modal, having separate paragraphs of effects and that "Then" on it

Edit: I can't read! I can only reanimate from my graveyard. Well, after this, I'll start taking reading classes again.

Deck Help Do Nothing Valgavoth Build?

Upvotes

I understand that Valgavoth is quite literally the top commander for rakdos on many deckbuilding sites, but DAMN if she didnt perfectly fit the theme of what I wanted, which I shall explain now. I am open to other commanders if it seems like they fit my concept/theme better.

I found myself disillusioned with decks that were group hug style where everyone benefits and kinda wanted to draft up something where everyone (except me much) suffers instead.

The idea, is that despite being advertised as a "burn" deck, its all dependent on actions opponents take, and causes them to suffer directly proportionately to what they do. Some of them cause *each* opponent to take damage, which in my opinion is the best possible effect here, and id love more sources of the group suffering if possible.

Discard a card from a faithless looting? Two damage

Play a creature? Two damage

Kill my creature? Sacrifice your creature and take damage.

Tap a Mana rock? Two damage

Search your library? One damage

tap a nonbasic land? One damage

Basically the hope is that with "fun" effects like [[Painful Quandary]] or [[Pain Magnification]] people will be thinking harder about what they want and will cause battlecruiser meta to stagnate.

And Valgavoth is a splendid commander for a sit back and do nothing and burn opponents style strategy. Hell, just targeting Valgavoth at all, forces damage.

Idk, if theres a better commander that fits my theme, I am fully all ears, but at the moment, Valgavoth kinda fits the concept the best.

And as I mentioned earlier, I would also love any other solid inclusions for this "do nothing burn" concept that I dont have in my linked decklist I am currently working on. (definitely a hard rough draft that doesnt even have lands added yet).

https://moxfield.com/decks/m8QIEn7Y3UiBjaoBfPtg2A

I also want to clarify that my playgroup is very chill with this type of degneracy, and I love the idea of kicking it up a couple notches. We play (roughly) high power bracket 3, with some people running game changers and others not. I dont think I personally want to include any but am open to one or two if it seems fitting for the theme or would REALLY help the deck.
