This was a game played in Blacksburg. And for a night, this seemed like the old in our primes VT.

Bring it back! The league needs you to be great again. Or anyone at all. Please.

Time to see if September Maryland is stronger than James Franklin’s hatred
•
u/Packman03 2d ago
Iirc, they played in September in 2019 and PSU won pretty convincingly (UMD did already have a loss at that point).
•
u/RedBuchan Ohio State Buckeyes • Air Force Falcons 2d ago
I just checked and PSU won 59-0 in that game

Franklin will forever be pissed about what happened to Maryland with Ralph the Fridge
every Maryland game to Franklin is "Win One for the Fridge"
•
u/rkdghdfo 1d ago
Remember when Maryland ran up the score on VT during the Pinstripe Bowl during Pry's intro as head coach? Pry remembers and Franklin is going to deliver some sweet payback.
•

Fuck me dude we are going to get destroyed. Hating ass Franklin is something else.

I caught that too. Very symbolic of how he operates as a coach.

What’s your thought after your week 0? Just like us you are never as good/bad as your first week but the oline for you was scary good. Pribula (spelling?) ran incredible and threw his few passes ok. But your D looked good as well. So scary in the whole VA
•
u/Snasty728 Virginia • Commonwealth Cup 1d ago
Much more optimistic now than I was going in considering the injuries we had. O-line and the d were the strengths like you said. That said unless WVU, Florida State, or Syracuse bounce back this season (all unlikely) then we won’t get a true test until we go to SMU in mid-October. Gonna be hard to gauge how real we are until then IMO.

You can tell the VMI kids are high character. Not easy being down bad like that on the road and keeping your composure. Good luck, Keydets.

We’re generally beyond terrible.
New Coach this season, replacing a terrible coach and previous staff. Most of the upper classmen on the roster hit the portal. And wound up on D2 rosters, so you’re not too far off.
I knew this season was going to be rough wirh mostly rats and thirds, but damn.
Did our defense ever touch one of your RBs?

Many people don’t understand how bad VMI is. This isn’t the same as beating ODU or even W&M. This is a game that shouldn’t have been played.

Franklin is gonna light this team's ass up this week for giving up 3 and those penalties.

The penalties were literally my only gripe with this game. They got us to jump so many times with hard counts. Can’t do that against better opponents.

Honesty, the fact that the line for that game is now only Miami -16.5 is a sign of how impressed people were with this win. I’d bet that line opened closer to 25-28 points.

I don’t feel like we’ll get spanked by ODU this year at least. Maryland will probably be the true first test to see where this team sits, then Pitt. If we’re still doing well at that point then I’d say it’s going to be a good season.
I think SMU is winnable. I don’t think we’ll get obliterated by Clemson, possible upset. A win @ Miami is only happening if half of their team gets arrested for DUIs or Tech teaches their players mind control.

Taking this game with the biggest grain of salt possible because it’s VMI & I’ve learned better being a VT fan the last 7 years. But good god there is something completely different to the aura of this team than what we had under Pry and Fuente. I want to see what it looks like against a competent team.

Man ts feels different. Even watching Enter Sandman, I’ve never seen Lane look so electric. It feels very strange to be hopeful as a Hokies fan.

VMI is among the worst FCS teams so this is basically a D2 win, but after the past 10 years it still feels good to win this how we should, by 70 points.
•
u/GPpats1995 2d ago
100%. But, wofford is a particularly mediocre FCS team as well and Tech did not come close to dominating like that the last 2 years. This was a great week 1 performance.

Objectively VMI is a very bad fcs school with even more structural limitations than the academies, but was nice to see us actually play our own game where it was clear the players were being held to more of an expectation than the scoreboard.
Also, the players actually looked like they found the weight room in the off season for once.
