Not to exaggerate but this is the best game I’ve ever seen

u/Iwantthat799 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

Pry would have won this game 17-10 and called it a gritty win

u/Sentinel8675309 Penn State • Virginia Tech 2d ago

Don't knock Pry. Great dude. He had no resources

u/omirsantos Virginia Tech • Black Diamond Tro… 2d ago

This is insane revisionist history lol

u/Sentinel8675309 Penn State • Virginia Tech 2d ago

Nah it's not. VT doubled it's salary pool across the board

u/cssvt Virginia Tech Hokies • TCU Horned Frogs 2d ago

Pry seems like a great guy and a great coach but he’s not a great head coach. Increased salary may have gotten him 1(?) extra win. More salary allocation and resources are true but they’re not the reason for his lackluster tenure at the helm.

u/Sentinel8675309 Penn State • Virginia Tech 2d ago

In my opinion it was too big of a jump. It seems starting off at a smaller school as a HC and building a staff, then moving as a unit is the best way to succeed. Trying to hire all new staff with a limited salary pool as a first time HC at a P5 program hasn't been going well lately. Franklin brought like 20 office personnel and dozens of assistants because of the salary pool. Same way Campbell was able to bring his staff, more pay

u/cssvt Virginia Tech Hokies • TCU Horned Frogs 2d ago

I agree he probably would’ve had more success at a smaller conference. Our admin was just legitimately that bad and out of touch that it took interviewing Franklin to finally accept what was needed since that was required to land him.

u/Traditional-Till9998 Virginia Tech • Appalachian … 1d ago

100% both Pry & Fuente needed to happen unfortunately, in order for admin to stop playing the underdog. If that had happened DURING Beamer's era who knows how high we could have gone. Now we know the program has uncapped potential and we're starting again on the ground floor. Its incredibly exciting

And also don't play down how bad VMI is. Tech did exactly what they should have done and didn't let their foot off the gas until very late in the game. But man, VMI was holding 7 players back on extra point situations.

u/Sentinel8675309 Penn State • Virginia Tech 2d ago

I honestly was going to mention that but didn't want to be a buzzkill. They won one game last year. It was against a D2 school. They are absolutely dog shit lmao

u/AFriendlySloth Virginia Tech Hokies • Oregon Ducks 2d ago

Obviously it's fun when we score a bunch but come on, it's hard to make a lot of assumptions from this game with how bad VMI are.

u/throwaway2987650 Florida Gators 2d ago

I lived right next door to VMI’s campus and stadium until very recently. That school has had 2 good football years in its entire existence. I will say they do have an oddly loyal fanbase with a lot of support in Virginia and East Tennessee.

u/GPpats1995 2d ago

You are literally being downvoted because of your flair. We sat 3 rows behind VMI's bench tonight. They do not belong on the same field as VT or UVA. It was almost sad and they were just getting the shit knocked out of em. One of VMI's player's mother was seated two rows behind us...it was a little awkward and my mom was literally sad for her knowing how shite it would be watching her boy's team get their shit kicked like that. So yeah you are correct. It was like a pro boxer sparring with a child using Hulk Hands.

u/PickpocketJones Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago

While this is true, if I'm not mistaken they haven't scored 70 in a game since 1995.

u/Quirky-Marsupial-420 1d ago

Yeah VT was 55.5 point favorites.

The VT of old wouldn’t have covered but this was just VT doing what they were supposed to. Blowing out a really bad VMI team.

This was the best I’ve felt the morning after a game since Beamer left. God this was cathartic. I don’t care what the quality of the opponent was. Our first 70+ point win since 19-fucking-22!

Franklin will forever be pissed about what happened to Maryland with Ralph the Fridge

every Maryland game to Franklin is "Win One for the Fridge"

u/rkdghdfo 1d ago

Remember when Maryland ran up the score on VT during the Pinstripe Bowl during Pry's intro as head coach? Pry remembers and Franklin is going to deliver some sweet payback.

u/Traditional-Till9998 Virginia Tech • Appalachian … 2d ago

I caught that too. Very symbolic of how he operates as a coach.

u/Sweaty_Fly_3965 Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago

What’s your thought after your week 0? Just like us you are never as good/bad as your first week but the oline for you was scary good. Pribula (spelling?) ran incredible and threw his few passes ok. But your D looked good as well. So scary in the whole VA

u/Snasty728 Virginia • Commonwealth Cup 1d ago

Much more optimistic now than I was going in considering the injuries we had. O-line and the d were the strengths like you said. That said unless WVU, Florida State, or Syracuse bounce back this season (all unlikely) then we won’t get a true test until we go to SMU in mid-October. Gonna be hard to gauge how real we are until then IMO.

u/stillbornfox Virginia Tech • Northwestern 2d ago

u/kbchucker VMI Keydets 2d ago

We’re generally beyond terrible.

New Coach this season, replacing a terrible coach and previous staff. Most of the upper classmen on the roster hit the portal. And wound up on D2 rosters, so you’re not too far off.

I knew this season was going to be rough wirh mostly rats and thirds, but damn.

Did our defense ever touch one of your RBs?

u/trestl Virginia Tech Hokies • Team Chaos 2d ago

I didn't know things were that bad. I got a good chuckle from your coach drinking a diet coke and looking at the field like he was watching the weather and not anything he had control over.

The diet coke cracked me up

u/maxman1313 Virginia Tech • North Carolina 2d ago

I don’t feel like we’ll get spanked by ODU this year at least. Maryland will probably be the true first test to see where this team sits, then Pitt. If we’re still doing well at that point then I’d say it’s going to be a good season.

I think SMU is winnable. I don’t think we’ll get obliterated by Clemson, possible upset. A win @ Miami is only happening if half of their team gets arrested for DUIs or Tech teaches their players mind control.

I've never felt so good after a game quite like tonight. The future looks so bright, and the vibes are immaculate

Objectively VMI is a very bad fcs school with even more structural limitations than the academies, but was nice to see us actually play our own game where it was clear the players were being held to more of an expectation than the scoreboard.

Also, the players actually looked like they found the weight room in the off season for once.

Fuck this. I'm still mad about the end of the Michigan game.

Fuck Michigan. I need something to keep me from complaining about Clemson.
