Megathread IT'S MEDIA MONDAY

Upvotes

Hey r/BPD! We want to give you a designated spot in the sub every week to offer up your reflections and thoughts on the ways you relate to stuff in media, like books, movies, shows, characters, song lyrics, etc.

This topic comes up a lot, and we want to keep it in an easily findable place for people who both want to share/express, and people who want to find entertaining material out there that also makes them feel seen.

Please DO:
Say why the thing resonates with you on a BPD level

Please do NOT:
Claim a song, character, or show “has BPD” or “is about BPD" when it is not confirmed. That’s armchair diagnosing and not allowed here.

This will be a weekly megathread available every Monday!
Cheers,

Love napkin + r/BPD Mod Team

💭Seeking Support & Advice i made my partner break up with me to stop the toxic constant cycle

Upvotes

my boyfriend and i have been together for 2 years. my bpd has completely ruined our relationship at this point. my constant mood instability and lack of emotional control especially with my anger has caused us to break up over 10 times.
it’s the same cycle every time. he does something that triggers me - i split and completely go insane - i say and do things i regret, even turning to abusive behavior in the past - i break up with him, block him on everything - couple days later i come back crying, begging for forgiveness. it’s not fair to either of us, and he doesn’t deserve being treated like this whatsoever.
today was the last time i allowed it to happen. i split on him again, and instead of being patient and understanding like he always is, i think he too finally reached his limit, which i cannot blame him for whatsoever.
i know ending things doesn’t work for me, because once ive calmed down i come crawling back to him, so i begged him to be the one to leave me, to finally stop this constant cycle because he deserves better and he deserves peace. he tried everything he could to convince me otherwise but my mind was set. or so i thought.
now i’m spiraling. he is the most amazing man i have ever met, i can’t even begin to explain. i know this is most likely for the best, but ive never felt so depressed, he was my best friend, i was 100% emotionally dependent on him, and now i feel the loneliest i’ve ever been. i promised him and myself to stand on this decision this time but im already fighting against myself not to text him and take it all back.

does it get better? does anyone have any advice for me?
i know i need help and to work on myself and being in a relationship rn wont help, but i cannot imagine a future without him in it.

General Post maybe this is why i grieve so much

Upvotes

what breaks my heart the most about bpd is seeing people completely break down in front of someone they love and watching that person just… not care. i genuinely cannot understand how you can watch someone you love cry right in front of you and have it not break your heart even a little.

my bpd has been all over the place, and i know i can split and become overwhelmed by my emotions, but even when i’m hurting or angry, seeing someone i love cry would destroy me. i can’t imagine looking at someone i love while they’re falling apart and just feeling nothing. and seeing so many people with bpd go through this makes me cry. i read their stories and think about how badly they just wanted the person they loved to care that they were hurting. sometimes i think that’s what i grieve the most. not just what bpd takes from us, but how many of us have cried in front of someone we loved and still somehow felt completely alone. i wish i could hug every single one of you. i really do. 👌🏾

💭Seeking Support & Advice Shame

Upvotes

How do you guys deal with the shame? It feels like a shackle. Every memory haunts me. Every interaction I've had where I acted out on emotion. It makes me cringe and literally makes me lay in bed and spiral. I've cried at work and not a normal cry like I literally bawled my eyes out, I've hurt people who were only ever trying to help me, I ruined relationships, opportunities, and my self image. I feel like throwing up and there's a huge weight of anxiety on my chest. Please give me some hope. This is so unbearable.

💢Off My Chest/Journal Post Need to say this out loud

Upvotes

I've been working against my BPD for 10 years. Maybe more. Thought everything was under control and then I had a fight with my 6 years girlfriend. She left

At the moment I hated her. I didn't knew if I loved her. Then a few days went by... I thought the problem as something but she never told me until today that I asked her to come back home. She said no. That she loves me, but love herself more. She can't come back to a house where she doesn't know how she is going to be received. That she will be yelled at for little things and then she will have to hide in the balcony.

I knew these things happened. But I didn't know it was so big that I was being such a monster. Can you imagine love someone with all your heart and then notice you have been a monster to them all along?

I thought that ended. I...I just can't do this. I changed my passwords to a single one, gave it to her for safekeeping. And Im just...I can't. I was given something beautiful and I destroyed it. Again. After years of thinking I was doing better.

It comes a moment that...you gotta ask yourself, until when are you going to hurt the people you love?

i need to talk to other people with bpd about this because holy fuck i feel insane and i think that everyone was right

i am a liar and im manipulative and im so fucking horrible

a person i had residual love for told me that they don’t love me and that they never did and i think ive been viewing it from a point of view of oh maybe they’re saying it in a way to protect my feeling while ive been in a relationship. my gf asked me if i wanna open up our relationship to him to try stuff out and idk it’s just been horrible and im high and drunk and relapsed again (within two days) and i think i would be better off dead

i hate that this my first post but it definitely won’t be my last i feel so fucking psychotic i hate living with this and this is only from being off my meds for one week

edit: hi im much better now, my gf help and the commenter helped i know ive only had one comment but seeing the amount of views helped me realize im not alone

💭Seeking Support & Advice My best friend said the reason people lie to me is because I scare them out of telling the truth

Upvotes

Not really sure if this is completely bpd related but I wasn’t sure where else to talk about this. I’m very upset about this and he’s acting like I took it as an attack for no reason. Does that not seem like an attack? His exact words were “if people keep making promises to you that turn out to be false when the truth is much easier, you should really be looking at yourself and how you handle the truth, cause you could find there’s a reason you scare people into making promises” … is that not a fucked up thing to say and in general just a fucked up way to look at it? I feel like that’s just him trying to make himself feel better about the times he has lied to me. Because really in my mind, the only reason for lying is because one feels guilty about whatever the truth is. How is that my fault? Idk. I told him it’s insane that I’m being made to feel like it’s my fault that people (really just mainly him) lie to me and he was like “I never said that” .. isn’t that basically what that message was implying? And my boyfriend told me that when the two of them were texting, my best friend in question said I’m mad at him for no reason. Like come on. Also it’s not like I’m fucking evil. Ugh idk

💭Seeking Support & Advice Do you ever split on yourself or is this something else?

Upvotes

Hi, Id like to say I Do have BPD.

Well today I broke 2 of my boyfriends mugs. I didn't mean to, I tripped. I also replaced them.

He isn't upset in the slightest. Genuinely chill about it

But I am. I am so angry at myself I could genuinely scream and cry. I hate myself so much for breaking his mugs, one of which was a Valentine's present from me to him. It was an inside joke :( I feel so genuinely upset and I am having a hard time coping. Am I the only one?

CW: Multiple Anyone else feel like they were misdiagnosed?/BPD stigma frustration NSFW

Upvotes

CW; talking about specific BPD symptoms, feeling dismissed, feelings of invalidation, mentions of childhood, anxiety, transience, and alcohol.

was diagnosed with BPD when I was 17 after a 45 minute assessment. This diagnosis has been reaffirmed by two psychiatrists since then (also about one 30 minute meeting each). I do have significant childhood trauma involving abandonment, neglect, abuse, etc.
however that being said, i recently obtained my medical charts and often times the notes by doctors are pretty biased and often used incorrectly to reaffirm BPD. For example; I called my primary care doctors office to request anti nausea medication, as I had the stomach flu and was very much not having a good time (I have a pretty intense fear of throwing up). In the phone appt note, the resident wrote that they believed I was having a “BPD crisis rather than actual flu symptoms”, which is just wild to me? I remember making that phone call, I was on the floor next to the toilet with a horrible stomach bug that had lasted like 3 days. This pattern continues throughout my medical record, one time (during a weird on and off type stomach bug a few years later) they wrote that I refused to leave the office and go home because I didn’t want to be alone?? And that I was in “BPD crisis” and that I had to be “de escalated”. In reality, I had asked if I could sit for a few minutes because I felt like I was going to be sick if i stood up 💀
Idk, I’ve been in therapy for many years consistently, and I’ve been doing a lot of self reflection for a while. I truly don’t believe I meet the criteria, but whenever I’ve tried to bring this up, my medical record states I have “poor insight into (my) condition” 🫠
One time during a discussion around my anxiety, I had laughed nervously when explaining my symptoms (I remember this phone call, it was with a resident I’d never met and the call felt awkward) anyways; they wrote I exhibited “inappropriate laughter” immediately followed with “she did not endorse responding to internal stimuli” which while they said I did not endorse it; it felt weird to follow up that sentence with something like that. They also did not ask me this. It just seemed poorly worded, almost like it’s implying that I might be.
They then continued to say that my panic attacks were more consistent with “BPD crisis than true panic attacks” (I have diagnosed panic disorder, I get random intense feelings that I’m dying, impending doom, high heart rate, dizziness, feeling like I can’t breathe, all around just like kinda freaking out; they last like 10-45 minutes); but apparently this is “BPD crisis”?
I don’t have grossly impulsive behaviours; yeah I buy an impulsive thing here and there, I used to have the odd night of drinking too much, and have been in abusive relationships. However, I have held a job, held an apartment for many years, I don’t drink at all, I don’t do any drugs, gamble, I’m not particularly promiscuous, I’ve only ever been in long term relationships (3), and I wouldn’t say I have a fear of abandonment. I do have low self esteem that I’m working on, but like, I am not afraid of people leaving me, I don’t go into crisis when someone decides they don’t want me in their life. It happens, it sucks, I get sad, I’ve blamed myself often for people leaving, but I don’t frantically try to make them stay or anything and it’s not a thought or fear that consumes me at all really.
I don’t drive recklessly, I don’t recklessly spend money, I don’t really recklessly do a whole lot. To be honest, I just go to work, I go home, I watch whatever series I’m into at the time, I make snacks, i spend time with my partner, I shower, and I go to bed.
I AM stubborn though, I am very passionate and “rigid” in my values, I’ve always been that way. I am pretty particular tbh, and I often come across as defensive without meaning to be. I do experience emotions quite intensely, and I feel like I have to work harder to regulate myself than the average person. I do have anxiety type attacks (hyperventilating, specific trigger; unsure what these are tbh) and panic attacks. The former usually has triggers unrelated to abandonment; usually if a man (of any relationship, stranger or not) yells at me for example.
Idk what I’m looking for here really, I’m just kind of tired of the stigma. It explains a lot of why I have been dismissed a lot regarding medical care. psych evaluations (proper ones that aren’t only 30 mins) aren’t covered where I live; and cost thousands up front.
Anyone else in the same boat where they have been told time and time again that this is their diagnosis, but they don’t quite understand what criteria they even meet to be diagnosed?
I had a turbulent teenage life when I was diagnosed in that I was transient and had to move back into an abusive home, I was in a relationship where he had cheated and I had to end things, I was struggling with drinking, it was just a lot. I was often labelled defiant because i had “no respect for authority” but my only authority figure at the time was passed out drunk 78% of the time, so I didn’t really have much respect for that lol. I feel like that was a pretty normal reaction rather than disordered.
I’m almost 27 now; and my life is pretty stable. I struggle mainly with anxiety and very low self esteem, along with learning to just let things be; so honestly I just don’t see it. I’ve never really questioned my diagnosis before, I just trusted it until I saw my own medical records and realized what experiences they were actually attributing to BPD; And none of it made sense.
Idk, just kind of wondering if anyone else is feeling the same? Maybe I’m missing something here?

💭Seeking Support & Advice Avoiding relationships and intimacy?

Upvotes

Does anyone struggle with the opposite issue I know it’s a common stereotype that people with BPD are always in relationships and stuff. But I actually feel like I avoid them when I like someone or date someone they become my FP and alot of times it’s been unrequited or they just were horrible boyfriends. The heartbreak is so painful for me , I’ve humiliated myself from being so scared of being t left and now my body just gets that fight or flight feeling at the idea of intimacy of a relationship, I’d rather be alone and I feel or upset if people do show interest or at the idea of going through being abandoned again. I feel like I will never find someone who can understand my feelings , I did once but we don’t talk anymore. Liking people just brings out the worst of my symptoms even with dbt the emotions are still so painful.

❓Question Post Can I do hard and adventurous things with BPD?

Upvotes

Is anyone here an adrenaline seeker? How does that work with BPD?

My biggest dream as a kid was to just run the world wild and free. I want to climb mountains and hike for weeks at a time. I want to fly planes and sail and dive the oceans. So far my mental health has really gotten in the way of life a bit. Over the last few years I've gotten some of my health and bearings back and I want to go for these hard things. I'm actively trying to get physically fit enough to have some of these experiences over the next few years. I can hike a fair bit. And I'm quite sporty but I want to work in the mountains or some remote island without the comfort of a city.

I am worried about my BPD. I'm miles better than I used to be and so much healthier all round but I've never gotten steady irl support (which is another thing I currently have in the works). I'm worried I panic and breakdown and I get myself killed because I can't stay calm.

I've always been able to keep calm in a crisis. I know that. But with such unstable emotions sometimes it's a bit terrifying to know that if I had a breakdown somewhere remote I'd potentially lose my life?

I hope this makes sense.

For context, my fp abandoned me some months ago, idk when I'll be moving on but ik it's gonna take years.

She made me feel so miserable after she left, I cant stop hurting myself, I even attempted.

And all I want to do is to make her suffer the same, maybe blackmail her or anything I can do to just make her feel like absolute shit.

My friends don't really understand, they tell me it's wrong but and? She was wrong for leaving me and she need to suffer the fucking consequences. Ill never be okay if she doesn't suffer like I did, suffer forever.

I'm even starting to hate my friends for not being 100% okay with how I think, they are just telling me to move on, I hate that.

💭Seeking Support & Advice How to not take my partner's period moodiness personally?

Upvotes

hello! i hope you're doing well :>

my partner(and also fp) is truly wonderful and i love her very very much. while bpd still affects me and i regularly fear her abandoning me, i feel more stable with her than with anyone else. she is truly a gift.

the only thing is that when she's on her period, she gets very moody and feels distant. which is not a problem!! i empathize with her struggles, i would be moody as hell if i were in her shoes. the issue is that no matter what i do, i cannot seem to get my bpd to shut the hell up during her period. her distance causes me to fear abandonment(even though i know that won't happen) and i start to freak out internally. sometimes even externally, which i'm not proud of. i want to do my best to support her during this time, not the other way around.

i've tried a lot of things to manage this. i've tried to be mindful, but the thoughts still come and torment me. i've even tried giving her more distance during her period, but she gets really sad if i do that. i don't know how to handle this, and it causes me to dread her period because i know my symptoms will flare up. which makes me feel even worse, because i'm taking her pains and making them about myself when i should be doing what i can to be help her.

how do i stop this? thanks!!

I can’t seem to get enough of being in relationships that are messy and ridiculous. Its so sad but sometimes so silly how crazy it can be. It’s okay if they’re funny (or so sad that they’re funny) or just sad. I’m just looking for my kindred hearts to commiserate and maybe laugh so I feel better about myself lol

💭Seeking Support & Advice Maintaining a health relationship

Upvotes

I started dating again after my late boyfriend passed away (he had Bipolar 1). It’s been hard these past few weeks. I won’t lie and say that I am perfect. As many of you may know, relationships and dates can bring out some of these BPD symptoms out. I want to prevent that as much as possible. I recently reconnected with a guy I knew since 2nd grade (I’m 23). He knows a lot of what I went through growing up. Last night, I had an emotional connection with him. He still understood me. For once, I do not feel the need to explain or apologize for my past. He made me feel safe and heard. Afterwards, he asked if it was okay if we fall asleep on the phone together. I agreed. Super empathetic and he listens to what I want to do (like we played all my favorite Roblox games). He also played with my sister and she said he’s super kind. I don’t want to ruin this. I want to love again. I feel he’s the right person. It’s so weird how life works. He is traveling to see me on Sunday. I am super anxious. He’s also willing to visit me weekly since we live an hour away. He works 12 hr shifts at the hospital but he still makes time to call me at the end of the day. Do I communicate with him my potential triggers? So far he hasn’t done anything to trigger me, he’s been extremely communicative. Sorry for the long post. I’m so worried that I’m going to mess this up

💭Seeking Support & Advice I need some advice

Upvotes

So I have this guy friend who has BPD. All he literally does is sit home and draw every day. He goes out every once in a while he has a lot of mental health issues.

His abandonment issues are on like the absolute next level. Part of me feels really bad and then the other part of me doesn’t even know what the hell to feel

He tells me his trauma and his abandonment issues are so bad. He had a lot of shit happen to him during his childhood that got him this way

He tells me he wants a kid so bad and then he quickly change his mind saying oh no I don’t want children. I just don’t wanna be alone. I’m traumatized and I don’t know what I want.

He keeps haunting me that he wants kids with me and I keep telling him I don’t want children. I don’t wanna raise children. I don’t wanna deal with that. He just doesn’t respect it.

Are people that have borderline on this level? I’m not saying everyone’s like that, but can I get to the point where it’s like something like this?

I don’t have this mental health issue, but I heard people that have it can get really intense with certain things and I know everyone experiences it differently

I just need to know because I obviously don’t want children and I stated that multiple times and I told him to find a girl that does and he just doesn’t seem to get that

❓Question Post Dae feel good during a split?

Upvotes

Before I go into it, I don’t mean the terrible things we say or do during it, or the shame/guilt spiral after it. I mean just being able to fully unleash all the anger you’ve built up inside you.

For me I scream as loud as I can and I break things. I’m embarrassed and ashamed afterwards, but in the moment it feels so good to just like get all of that anger and negativity energy out that I’ve been carrying around for so long.

It’s not about being angry at someone, but more so the act itself and the sense of relief.

I wonder if going into the woods every once in a while and just screaming and smashing plates would help kind of control that anger when we split?

Idk, dae feel this way?

💭Seeking Support & Advice Unconditional affection means: "I express love because I love you, not because I am demanding a specific reaction back." So how to be consistent when i am triggered?

Upvotes

Any ideas how to work with my impulses? I have impulses to blame my person and be suddenly cold and distant whenever something triggers me.

I figured out yes i am inconsistent and unstable with my attention and affection towards her. And it hurts me knowing i cause her so pain and unpredictability. We have complicated relation - we are not officially couple but we love each other. I just try to be better for her for a while and i just realised i am not consistent with our communication. I get triggered and i pull away i start blaming her for everything and i don't want to be that person anymore. I understand it has to be difficult and painful for her and i really want to be better.
