I've been using DxO Photolab 9 for some time and I'm currently testing DxO Photolab 10 in free trial.
I see that they've added color grading wheel and feature seems to be competing with Curves and HSL and I'm trying to understand how can I fit it in my editing flow.

From what I understand color wheel can be one place where I add both tone and saturation without using curves and hsl. Also curves impact overall exposure of images (adding RGB in curves will increase exposure while cyan, magenta and yellow will reduce it).

So from what I understand it's just a simpler tool and generally I shouldn't be using RGB curves and color grading tool in same edit. Color grade wheel saves me from doing mental calculation of how to bring lets say purple into shadows.

Am I missing something?

Minha dúvida é que o resultado das fotos ficou como esta que coloquei de exemplo.

Minha esposa não gostou do resultado e eu perguntei ao fotógrafo se ele poderia diminuir um pouco o brilho das fotos (tenho noções bem básicas de fotografia, quase leigo, ok).

Enfim, o cara se ofendeu ao extremo... Falou que era isso e tal... Ainda assim, expliquei que minha esposa não tinha gostado e perguntei se ele conseguiria fazer algo com a edição.

Bom, o cara me devolveu fotos editadas com IA (Rosto completamente modificado)...

Aí estou trazendo aqui pra entender se realmente eu estou errado em questionar este brilho da imagem ou se ele realmente está certo.

Uns 70% do ensaio as fotos estão assim. Não dá pra ver nada do céu, só tudo amarelo.

Outras que ele tirou contra um coqueiro ficaram boas...

Hey, new photographer here. My father recently gave me his old Nikon D3000 since he doesn’t use it much anymore. My grandfather was a professional photographer when he was alive, and he had two other lenses with his old D80, may it’s aperture control unit gear rest in peace. I recently found said D80 and lenses, and was curious what those two would be better for, compared to the 18-55mm lens that was on the D3000 when I got it.

My father gave me a basic rundown of each lens and their features like the AF/MF, VR, zoom, and aperture, but I’d like to ask the photographers of reddit what scenarios they’d use each lens for, and how I can utilize them when taking shots. I’ve mostly been sticking to the 18-55mm lens since it’s pretty basic and easy to use. I’m specifically interested in the 28-300mm macro lens, I’ve struggled to get anything in my photos looking sharp whenever I’ve used it. Any tips and ideas are welcome and appreciated.

Note that the last two photos are of the same lens, just different angles to get the full details.

Travel, for me, has always been about travelling light and being present in the moment.

With modern phones becoming so good, you can take a photo, edit it and share it instantly without carrying a camera body, lenses, batteries and everything else that comes with dedicated gear.

I travel with my camera almost everywhere, and I genuinely love using it. But to be completely honest, unless I'm specifically planning a wildlife, bird photography or dedicated photography trip, I often wonder if I actually need it for casual travel and photowalks.

For memories, street scenes, food, landscapes and random moments during a trip, a modern phone is always in my pocket and is incredibly capable.

So I'm curious what others think:

Has the modern smartphone become the ultimate minimal travel photography setup?

When you're travelling purely for the experience rather than specifically for photography, do you still carry a dedicated camera?

And perhaps the bigger question—are we carrying cameras because we genuinely need them, or because we simply love using them?

No right or wrong answer here. Just curious how other travellers and photographers think about it.

So I recently got into photography with a Fujifilm xt20 that I got a good deal on.

So far I've shot portraits and street photography and I'm starting to be familiar with the camera. I shoot RAW + JPEG but I am not a big fan of "recipes".

I'd like to get into post processing but I can't afford quality hardware, I have an old Dell computer and a 2014 MacBook air hahaha. I also have a moto g85 as a phone and a 3-4 years old Lenovo tablet with a decent screen.

As I know, with such gear I won't be able to do heavy editing with Darktable or so, so my questions are :

- I'm guessing not everyone has a 100sRGB screen at home, so how do you know or "guess" what you're doing when post processing as you know your screen might deform what you see ?

- Which of the gear I listed would you recommend using ? Light editing on phone, tablet ? Or trying something with the old computers ? My guess is that I'd get a better display on phone/tablet

- Any post-processing low-money-bad-gear tips ? Hahaha

Here are two of my un-edited images, I know they're not much but thought I'd share for constructive criticism and to make this post more appealing hahah !

I’m currently weighing my options for a mirrorless camera. I’m currently on a canon rebel t2i and I’m not planning to buy just yet but I figured I’d start learning and finding out what I might like. I was thinking if I go mirrorless I would just keep my t2i just for fun (sometimes high iso grain can be nice!) and then I’d maybe get something sony because of how wide the lens market is for Sony cameras. This was my main line of thought until I started reading about fujifilm. I know Sony works great and produces wonderful pictures but I keep reading about how much people love the feel of fujifilm.

After some more research I can admit they’re very cool looking and the film simulations as well as the X-trans sensor seem really cool for JPEG shooting. I’ve gathered that they do have some weak points such as slower auto focus, somewhat lacking low light capability, and I’ve seen some people mention that RAW Lightroom editing with fujifilm presents some challenges, but in tandem with that I’ve read that they just bring a lot of fun and personality into photography and that really caught my eye. I love photography and the idea of a fujifilm sounds like a lot of fun when actually shooting, but I also love learning how to edit my photos. Post is a really fun part of the process and I’d like to continue learning and getting better with it so I’m just a little concerned about the cons of fujifilm. Sony seems like a better option on paper, but my research has made me feel that I won’t find a lot of personality or excitement in using a Sony camera.

Overall I’m still learning and developing my eye for composition, so I’m going to wait until I’ve gotten better with the equipment I have first, but I’m anticipating the day I get to finally add something new to my arsenal. I think I’d enjoy a fujifilm, but realistically it seems that Sony would fit my logistical needs better. I’m fairly sure at some point I’ll choose to try both but I’m wanting to hear some personal feedback about Fujifilm’s mirrorless cameras to know how people feel about them, which models you’d recommend, and what you might think their strengths and weaknesses are to aid me in my decision. Hello Reddit users. I'm very confused about how the focal length works, basically, I started with a Nikon d3100 with the kit lens and I'm considering upgrading to a Sony a6100 with 16-50 mm and 55-210 mm and to buy a 50 mm/1.8 to have something better for portraits. So I was asking some questions to the AI and they kept saying something about the crop, and "the 16-50 is really a 24-75 mm".

So... I would like some help with that, because it's something I never understood how it really worked, the lenses are always in Full Frame units?

Decided to try a trial of DxO PureRAW just to see how it compares to AI Denoise in Lightroom Classic.

On my actual proper photos of dark festival arenas or nightclubs, I can't really see any difference compared to LRC's own Denoise.

I just tried to take some frankly ridiculous photos of my wife making food in the kitchen -

1/8000, f/8, ISO 102,400 - now this is absolutely stupid, no one should ever be shooting that high ISO. So it probably shouldn't be a surprise the results in DxO are a horrible creamy mess. Admittedly it did better than the LRC denoise, but while LRC made it look like someone had applied the "watercolour painting" filter in Photoshop, DxO made it just look like AI slop.

But then trying to get a bit more sensible and shoot at ISO12,800 (stopping down to f/4.5, still 1/8000) and LRC denoise actually gives pretty good results with the shadows dropped and exposure raised, but DxO makes everything, again, look like AI slop. In the background is an old china jug we keep kitchen utensils in, with a pattern detail around the top. LRC keeps that detail, DxO totally changes it, again, like AI slop.

Am I doing something wrong here? I had high hopes for DxO and was considering buying it from some of the results I've seen, but between this and various people saying they suddenly make it much worse before telling you the magic fix is to "buy the new version" I'm wondering how much of their marketing and business model is just good advertising skills.

To make clear too - outside of these stupidly extreme ISO and shutter speed examples, I'm not seeing much if any difference from DXO vs LRC on normal photos I've shot. LRC Denoise works just fine even if I'm pushing ISO 8000 (rare) on my A7RV.

Im a beginner, how do i clean this dust particle off my inner viewfinder? It looks annoyingly big when looking into viewfinder and i want if off. I tried rocket blower but it won't come off. Canon 600D

I would like to buy myself a new or used camera with better feedback screen (?) as the one I have rn as a very shitty resolution.

Im looking for something that can have lenses added with time, a feedback screen on a pivot, and hopefully around a max budget of 700$-1k$ (CAD).

I am a beginner and I do not know yet how to edit but here some of the work im doing and would like to improve on with more recent equipment.

Asking that because if I buy a pc it’ll have storage. But if I buy a laptop (likely a mac) it would be already expensive plus another $300+ for a ssd.

Hi everyone.

After selling all my film cameras about 10 years ago, I’m keen to get back into taking landscape photos again. Although I love the idea of film photography and the idea I can eventually be skilled enough to create something like a beautiful silver gelatine print in the darkroom. I’d love to get to the point that I can sell my prints. Either individually, at a gallery or included as part of a book.

However before I go dropping a load of money on not only cameras and film but also training and equipment. Do potential customers actually care that a photograph is hand developed. Is there a premium attached? If not, maybe I should be going digital for the easier workflow. My interest lies more in the analogue space but it’s a much longer, more expensive journey.

Has anyone been on a similar journey? And any regrets?

Hi all, I was recently gifted an old but fully functional Nikon D90. It came with 3 lenses (18-35mm, 18-140mm and 50mm prime).

I will be traveling in a few days and I was wondering whether I should bring the 18-140mm or the 50mm prime. My preference would be towards the prime as it is the lightest of the three. Any suggestions/tips for a newbie like me? Thank you in advance.

Who are some landscape photographers whose work is more quiet and subdued, based around fairly ordinary everyday locations instead of the stereotypical scenic vistas, mountains, grand open fields and so on? With more natural colors instead of the trendy overtly edited, saturated and pseudo-HDR look?

I'd like to find more sources of inspiration for my beginner landscape work but I live in Southern Finland which means everything is covered in forests and small lakes, there are no mountains and in general visibility for miles on end just isn't a thing. The practical effect is that any landscape work is by necessity much smaller scale instead of showing dramatic "wow" scenery. My preferences also heavily lean into how light, weather or atmosphere can temporarily transform ordinary places into something more.

Here's a few examples of the sorts of scenes I mean: 1, 2, 3. There is nothing inherently special about any of those locations and they only become interesting due to temporary conditions.

Surely there must be others who photograph with similar approach (only much better)?

I'm looking into the 135mm focal length. I'd like hear what are the thoughts on the Sigma, 7Artisans & Zeiss. does anyone have any of these? which would you choose if you had to?

Does anyone have any tips on taking photos in bars/clubs of people with flash? I always hate how skin tones turn out or how harsh/orange it can look. There’s only so much I can do with post editing.

My girlfriend sent me a tiktok of a photographer showcasing their photos and I mentioned that they looked dull and unedited. In her response, she claimed that they looked like they could be film. Keep in mind, these photos were taken by a digital camera. I just want to know if you can tell the difference between film vs digital raw?

I have some pictures from digital camera from 20 years ago and files somehow got corrupted. While full image is corrupted, the thumbnail is intact. I ran it thru chatgpt and somehow it extracted thumbnail embbeded inside picture. What tool or how can I do this manually?

I am looking for a decent quality beginner camera. I'm willing to buy used or new, preferably around $1k or under. If i need to spend more for decent quality, I will!

I would be interested in taking pictures in lower lighting spaces with quite a bit of movement, such as concerts. What would be a good starter camera to look for?
