“But what about a cryptic pregnancy?”

Upvotes

Is this you?

  1. Last had sex more than 3 weeks ago (sometimes months)
  2. Have had multiple negative home tests or blood tests for HCG
  3. (optional) Have had periods or withdrawal bleeds since having sex.

But you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant based on shows like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” or online stories about cryptic pregnancy. Could it be that?

So, in a word, no. If you have multiple negative pregnancy tests three weeks after having sex, you’re not pregnant. In order to support a pregnancy your body produces HCG. Without HCG, there is no pregnancy. HCG tells the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone, and is required for major changes to sustain pregnancy like growing a placenta. Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting even trace amounts of HCG, and blood tests as well.

There are three causes of false negatives with home pregnancy tests:

The first: Early measurement after conception. When people talk about cryptic pregnancy, they either never take a test, or they took a test too early and became pregnant after. It takes at least 7 days for a fertilized egg to float downstream and implant into the uterine lining. That’s why you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test after unprotected sex - 3 weeks makes it 100% solid result.

You’ll also see people say “I knew I was pregnant, but I didn’t test positive until I was 6 weeks”. This is because of how pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period (the day your period started), but, embryonic development only starts after an egg is ovulated and fertilized. In a textbook 28 day cycle, this happens on day 14, and the first day your period is missed you get a positive test. In real life, bodies are a little more complicated, and sometimes people ovulate weeks later leading to a discrepancy - a doctor will tell them they are 6 weeks pregnancy based on their last menstrual period, but in embryonic terms they are only 4 weeks pregnant because they ovulated on the 28th day of their cycle. If they tested when they were ‘late’ on the 29th, it would have been a negative test. They weren’t pregnant, but they became pregnant later. For people who are more visual, I have made a very ugly calendar for the above example scenario.

For a longer, more detailed explanation: "Your period isn't late" Part 1 and Part 2

The second: Dilute urine specimen. If your HCG levels are low, drinking a lot of water can result in false negatives in very early pregnancy. This is typically why you’ll see folks talking about testing with first morning urine - it’s the most concentrated. HCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours, and you can see in this figure how fast. At 20 days of embryonic development (aka about 3 weeks after sex), on average a pregnant person will have HCG around 1000 mIU/ml. At home tests are typically rated for detecting 10 - 25 mIU/ml.

The Third: The Hook effect. This is where there is too much HCG for a test to work properly. It is unlikely that this is happening especially if you’ve taken multiple tests. First, peak HCG is typically around 10-14 weeks pregnant - after this, it starts coming back down. Second, tests are often tested for the hook effect - wondfos (a very cheap test) showed no hook effect to concentrations of 200,000 mIU/ml. First Response Early Result showed no hook effect at 1,000,000 mIU/ml - much higher than any normal pregnancy. If you are concerned about it because you’re taking your first pregnancy tests 12-17 weeks after sex, you might dilute a sample of urine just in case for a second test. Although, that would be very unnecessary if you’re using an FRER.

When people do not figure out they are pregnant for months at a time, it is typically because they have not taken any tests. Denial of pregnancy is a more accurate descriptor.

If you believe yourself pregnant despite all the evidence, or having a lot of anxiety and fear around being pregnant, you may want to see a mental health specialist. If you’re feeling very unwell, or haven't had a period in months, you may want to see a doctor. Scarleteen has a great page on these things as well.

TL;DR HCG is required to support a pregnancy - if you've gotten multiple negative tests across a large time frame, there is no possible way you are pregnant from sex more than 3 weeks ago.

Hello friends! Mod Stress here to address a few things that come up often on this sub. Resources provided. :)

1.) You cannot get pregnant from fingering, with or without precum. Unless globs of fresh semen are being inserted into a vagina, fingering is just not going to cause a pregnancy. Dry humping also cannot cause a pregnancy. This article goes through all the sexual things that can happen that have no chance of pregnancy.

2.) It's extremely unlikely to get pregnant without PIV sex.* *Not including medical processes such as IVF to cause a pregnancy.

3.) If you're having unprotected sex, pregnancy is always technically possible. Doesn't matter if it's "just the tip" or "three strokes" or "pulled out before ejaculation." Pullout is 78% effective over the course of a year. Some of these scenarios are much less likely to result in a pregnancy than others, but we can't extrapolate the data like that. You're unlikely to get pregnant from one singular instance of unprotected sex, but it's always possible.

4.) Implantation bleeding is a misnomer. In fact, implantation is too small a phenomena to cause any symptoms.

5.) A test is mostly accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. If you're getting negative tests 2+ weeks after sex, you are not pregnant. Regardless of if you have your period or not. In early pregnancy, concentration of urine matters. Take a pink dye test after a 3-4 hour urine hold without drinking too much water for the most accurate results. At 21+ days after sex, dilution of urine won't matter. Do not look at tests outside of their validity window and thoroughly read the instructions for your test before you take it.

6.) You cannot have a true period and be pregnant. Some women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy (this is NOT their period). If bleeding were related to pregnancy, a test would be positive.

7.) It takes more HCG to cause symptoms than a positive test. If you're testing negative, any symptoms you are currently experiencing are not currently related to pregnancy. Lots of early pregnancy symptoms overlap with normal PMS symptoms.

8.) Am I having a Cryptic Pregnancy?? No, you're not.

9.) The only way to truly know when you ovulated using an approved FAM method. Apps are not an accurate way to track, your body doesn't know to follow an algorithm off your phone. While things like CM and OPKs may indicate your body is gearing up to ovulate, they do not confirm ovulation. Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and [r/FAMnNFP](r/FAMnNFP).

Some other helpful tips:

  • Read the leaflet that comes with your birth control so you understand how your medication works, possible side effects, how to use it, etc. [r/birthcontrol](r/birthcontrol) is also a good source.
  • If you're on birth control and using it properly, you are having protected sex (from pregnancy). This is true whether or not you are using a condom. If you are using protection properly, you do not need Plan B.

So me and my boyfriend were spent the weekend tg and I let him put it in raw a few times, yes I’m an idiot ik. All times but one It didn’t last long because I got scared and took it out, one time he pulled out and finished. I just need to know if I should take a plan b. I’m on birth control (combination pills) and I’ve only been a few hours late taking it max and haven’t actually missed any pills. Can you get pregnant the day before bleeding?

Upvotes

Hi all, me and my girlfriend had sex and we had it in raw for a little bit before we out on the condom. This happened the day her period was supposed to start but there was no bleeding. The next day, she starts bleeding and she's on day 3 right now but she's had no cramps. The blood is red and its still coming, its also more clumpy than usual. Is this a sign of pregnancy or is stress a reason for this? (She's been pretty stressed lately)

Thanks!

Should I be worried about being pregnant?

Upvotes

So I’m on the pill, Yasmin to be specific, but I always skip the period week. I go straight from the active pills in one pack to the active pills in another pack. My bf and I use no other protection. No condom no pull out and we didn’t get plan B or anything. I’m usually very good with taking my pill

My bf and I were together on holiday for almost 2 weeks about 3 weeks ago. During those two weeks we had sex basically every day. I also missed the pill like 5 days of the 12. After the holiday I basically just stopped taking the pill. I felt it wasn’t necessary anymore because I wouldn’t see him for a while.

This was around late August. I spotted lightly a few days after I stopped but I still haven’t gotten a period. For the last two or three mornings I’ve woken up quite nauseous. But that could also be because I’m on vacation again and have been drinking every day lol. I’ve also been getting some weird twinges in my tummy. It feels like its been in my right ovary. I’ve been having strange dreams and I’ve been way more emotional than I normally am. I think that’s everything thats not normal that I’m feeling

Should I be worried at all? I definitely don’t want to be pregnant and I was very upset that I was so irresponsible with my BC while we were active.

Spotting but no period?

Upvotes

My husband and I are trying to conceive so I could be pregnant. I took a test 2 days before my expected period and it was negative. Maybe too early? My period is 3 days late. I've only had light pink spotting (once bright red the night before I thought i would get my period) and only when wiping.

I haven't taken a test since. Could this be early pregnancy? Perimenopause (I'm 40)? This hasn't happened before. I know the most obvious thing would be to take another test.

First time. Advise?

Upvotes

Hi. Me and my partner of 8 years decided to finally take a leap in our relationship in terms of physical intimacy. We do not want to get pregnant at this time of our lives so we were responsible. Please see below the sequence.

  1. We did foreplay no condom and genital rubbing with lube.

  2. Before penetration we first put a condom. Of course, being anxious we checked it from time to time if it did not have any tear and we were very very generous in putting lube. Also, I don't know but is it normal for the condom to have folds on like upper part? Because that is how the condom looks like everytime we look for tears. Although, the base stays outside of my vagina cannot help but to think that some leaked at the base when he thrusts wherein I cannot track or see.

(Please correct me, is it advisable to withdraw the penis like every 30 seconds to check for tears? Because that is what we did)

  1. He did not ejaculate inside the condom. He withdrew like 10 minutes before finishing, i just gave him a blowjob after the PIV.

  2. After the sex, we filled halfway of the condom of tap water to check if it will leak. We observed it for like 5 seconds. No leaks.

Considering all of that could you tell me if it is possible that I am pregnant? Because I know for a fact that this is my most fertile week. It is my 14th day in cycle I am regular with a 28-30 day cycle. My discharge also was veeery very slimy so I know for a fact that my ovulation will be coming if not now maybe this upcoming days.

are we screwed, possible condom failure

Upvotes

my bf and i had sex once again, well we're always using the same size condom but this time, the condom's reservoir somehow keeps getting pulled down to his shaft, maybe because I wasn't as wet? since this is the first time of it happening it happened around 3 times and we still continued to have sex with it, can there be a potential leak of pre cum from that? since the reservoir keeps getting out of the tip. additional information is he pulled out with the condom on for extra safety. so are we screwed or not, the condom's reservoir space being pulled down to the shaft is the one's making us anxious. am i gonna get pregnant? pls tell me no

Upvotes

hi! first time taking ecp and i’m really anxious. my period was aug 17–21. i had unprotected sex on aug 27 and 29, but he didn’t finish inside. i took ecp around 5 hours after sex on aug 29. flo estimated my ovulation around aug 30.

i started bleeding on sept 5 and it lasted 4 days. could this be withdrawal bleeding or implantation bleeding? i’m also having headaches, nausea, and sore breasts.

is there still a chance i could be pregnant? any advice would be appreciated. thank you!

NO LECTURES PLEASE!! HAVE DEFINITELY LEARNED MY LESSON

my boyfriend and i have pretty regular (6-8 times a week) sex using solely the pullout method. weve been doing this for 6 months now but now my period was meant to be the 4th of september and still havent gotten it (today is the 8th).

i took a clear blue test yesterday which was negative (posted it on r/lineporn). last time we’ve had sex was the 6th of September and hes left now (long distance) so i cant pinpoint if its been 14-21 days.

should i be retesting?? if its negative why do i still not have my period?? let me know

Pregnancy Scare/YUZPE

Upvotes

It’s been almost 2 years since I last had sex, and then this happened. 😭

Had sex on Sept 4 with a condom, but unfortunately, it slipped off and got stuck inside me with the semen. I panicked so much because I really don’t want to get pregnant.

I went to an OB the next day to ask for emergency contraception, but wala daw available. I ended up doing the Yuzpe method on Sept 5.

My last period was Aug 9, so I’m also worried about the timing.

Sisters do you think Yuzpe will still work if taken the next day? Anyone here with a similar experience? Huhu, I’m so anxious. 😭

is this consider a condom failure?

Upvotes

me and my partner had sex earlier this day, we were out from work and we decided to have sex. we always wear protection, i mean always is all the time and we always use the same size of condom. but this time the condom keeps losing the space from the tip and it keeps on going to the shaft as he thrust inside me. we still continued even if it happened multiple times. the condom's space for the reservoir keeps moving down to the shaft and he keeps on putting it back, it never happened before so idk if we're gonna be fine or not, i'm kind of overthinking right now. he also pulled out with the condom on just in case. we're just having an anxiety about the condom not going to its right place as we placed it. i hope we're safe, are we?

Condom broke

Upvotes

Me and my bf are doing the deed, we were doing it abt for 40 mins up until the broke. My bf removed it and got some lube and when he put lube in, he stick it in and it broke while it was 1/4th inside. Theres probably amount of precum inside the condom while it broke. We are planning to buy plan b right now but i am really nervous.

What are the chances of being pregnant? Its sa safe bet to just get plan b right

Advice wanted

Upvotes

Hi all, me and my partner are new to trying but have been on an emotional roller coaster since the 2nd.
I have had 3 positive CB digital tests with weeks all on separate dates. However any other test is negative along side some digital tests. All saying “pregnant 1-2”
GP receptionist congratulated me and put me in contact with midwife’s but they said i would have to wait for clear positives and asking about bleeding.
We are both getting to the point of not hopeful and just both really want it to be there and happening.
I have also had multiple symptoms which led to me testing, such as ;
-change in nipple size, colour and sensitivity
-dizziness and headaches
-nausea
-fatigue
-sore back
-cramping
-really bad break outs
-change in discharge

Is it more likely to be false positives or just testing too early or something else?
if anyone has any suggestions or advice or even similar experiences please let me know and just share some advice or peace of mind.

Thank you

How most likely is the risk?

Upvotes

My period is now late like three days late. The month of June, I had two periods and also the month of July. Then around August, I started to have only one period. I had protected sex with a condom on August 19 (2 rounds, he pulled out before cumming, there weren't any leaks nor tear) and August 25 (Same still did the same). No leakage and tear.

‎I am just worried if there's a microtear and precum gets in.

Pregnant from pre cum?

Upvotes

This may have happened during my fertile window or even on the day that I ovulated (all I know is the days kinda line up and I also had the egg white mucus in the week leading up until it dried up the evening of. sorry for tmi). But there was no movement whatsoever he literally just sat in me for a few minutes total (we broke things up and he had only finished before the last time which didn’t last long at al). He didn’t finish inside me at all and there was no movement but im still really worried because of the possibility of pre cum while I might have been ovulating. Ive been spiraling the past few days because I know I made a massive mistake so I need someone to be rational for me.

Took the morning after pill, am i safe??

Upvotes

So, i had sex with a guy about ten days ago and his condom broke and he ejaculated inside me. About two hours after that, he bought me a morning after pill and i took it immediately. When that happened, i was on the fifth day of my period starting and the blood had already subsided.
Now, about a week after i started slightly bleeding again, got period like cramps and some light blood diluted with other clear bodily fluids. that stopped and yesterday i bled again but this time full on and it stopped today.
I know its a stupid question to ask but i have a lot of pregnancy paranoia and im new to sex and birth control.
Am i in the clear?
