Announcement Q&A with Justin Higham

Upvotes

Hello all and everyone,

We wanted to give you an update to let you know that the Q&A with Justin Higham is officially scheduled to take place on October 3rd, 4:00 p.m. UK time.

It will take place on our discord group, so if you want to attend be sure to join up.

There's a permanent link to it on the sidebar of this place, or you can just click it right here:

https://discord.gg/FhKngJJym

For those who don't know, Justin Higham is a long established performer, creator, and considering how many books and lessons he's put out, not to mention that he's virtually a full time teacher, he seems to have dedicated himself to passing on knowledge to others.

While you can buy his material, and even book a private lesson, you can now also just come for this Q&A.

You will be welcome to ask questions in the moment, but we will be providing him with questions in advance. So if there's something you want to ask, please go to our question bucket and drop it there.

You can easily find it in the discussion board section on our discord. Simply write any question you want to ask in it, and also upvote any question already there. The most upvoted questions will be given priority so giving the one's you like a boot is good.

There's still plenty of time to get your question in, so think about what you'd like to learn and let us know.

But for now, thank you very much for taking the time to read this, and I hope to see you at the Q&A.

Classic pass - My pinky doesn't work

Upvotes

It seems with the classic pass you have to get your pinky fairly deep into the deck with the break. As well as use some pinky strength within the move.

I have a slight problem being that my pinky doesn't really work. I broke it years ago, had surgery and never got strength or movement back really fully.

As a reference point for strength in my pinky, I can't get enough pressure for say a top shot. And for more day to day reference points, I don't have the strength to really hold anything with it.

In terms of range of motion, the angle for my pinky to get within the deck for the break is just about possible but only when I use my other hand to position it. It's not really possible without assistance because the range of motion isn't quite there.

One positive though is I have noticed it getting stronger and range of motion improving ever so slightly since starting card magic. Probably as a result of it being used in awkward ways haha.

Basically wanting to ask if anyone has anything similar / do you think it's worth sticking to alternative controls? At the minute I almost always use a Mahatma control which is going enough although some effects are cleaner with a pass

Edit: a better reference for strength is probably that I can't pull cards down for a break for say a double lift or getting a break on the bottom card. My pinky just doesn't have the ability to do it, despite my other one being able to with literally no training haha

Advice what am I doing wrong with my modified 3 card pile trick?

Upvotes

I've learned the trick where you make 3 piles of cards from a deck of 27 cards 3 times and in the end the chard will always end up where you want it from a chosen number between 1-27. the cards are supposed to be delt face up but I wanted to do it face down while showing the participant the piles so they will identify which one the chosen card is in but I don't see the cards face up. When I've run this wile the cards are face down the card never ends up in the right location.

You are supposed to take the chosen cards pile and place it in the stack of 3 piles in a certain order based on the chosen number so for example if the chosen number is 9 you go top, top, bottom. if the number is double digits you add them together and use that to get the first 2 deck movements the stack 1-9 bottom, 10-18 middle, 19-27. I don't know what's going wrong but the math is the same why isn't it working with the cards being dealt facedown?

I want to buy new playing cards for magic

Upvotes

About 7 years ago, I bought myself a Bicycle Standard deck. For 6 of those years, I haven't even touched it. What deck could I buy that offers both great handling and beautiful aesthetics?
An AI recommended Butterfly playing cards to me, but finding them in my country is practically impossible.

I want to get back into the world of magic. I'm thinking of buying a theory11 monarch

What's some magic themed decoration you have in your room/house?

Upvotes

I've considered displaying decks of cards, but I only use standard red and blue bicycle cards so it might be a bit bland.

It seems hard to find good stuff online.

Wondering what you all do!

Hi all first post- I have a question

Upvotes

Im looking for a very specific card trick tutorial. I saw it years ago on youtube (mismag822). Its a trick where by you pre order the cards and then the trick ends with you revealing a certain date. So you could set the trick up for the current date and the reveal would be a 5, 9, 2, 0, 2, 6.

does anyone recognise this trick and if so know where i cant find a tutorial for it. Thank you in advance

Tips on culling four of a kind and patter to say with it?

Upvotes

I can do the cull but I feel like it looks a little fishy... I would like for anyone to critique my technique, and also provide a few ideas on what to say. I would not like to say, "so we have a shuffled deck of cards" as that seems a little suspicious as a spectator haha. Thank you!

Magic Book Suggestions Wanted

Upvotes

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered but can you please suggest some books that would fit these criteria:

Only card magic

All Sleights and tricks or all sleights

All in the hands or mostly in the hands, no table

Sleight heavy tricks, no maths or principles

Actually strong magic

So I want magic or technique that will let me think of strolling magic.

Cheers,

Tom.

Advice Taking/watching video of practice

Upvotes

I'm transitioning to using video instead of a mirror to monitor my practicing. (With a mirror, I can't stop myself from squinting during the sneaky bits, which tells me nothing.)

Maybe a dumb question, but I'm curious how people handle the logistics of setting up the camera and reviewing the video.

It seems like a hassle: you position your phone/camera just right (maybe on a tripod), hit record, move to your spot, do the trick, hit stop, pick up the camera to watch the video, put it back in position, etc.

Is there a better way? I'm imagining something where you could connect the camera/phone to a laptop, and maybe there's some software out there so you could just hit a key or two on the laptop to start/stop recording and play the just-recorded video on the laptop screen.

Does such a thing already exist? The simpler and cheaper the better. Thanks.

A Mnemonica Trainer

Upvotes

I decided to pick up stack work again after two years or so of letting it calcify in my brain, and I thought I'd put my otherwise worthless computer science degree to good use and make a web app to help with training. It uses the approach I found the most effective when I learned mnemonica for the very first time, which was spamming Quizlet notecards. Other than that, it's got a couple of very useful functions that I think make the app a genuinely useful resource. Because it's a web app, it can be used on any device that can access the web, and I made sure it was dimensionally responsive, so it'll look just as beautiful on a small mobile device as it will on a computer screen. Oh, and it's free, and will always be free.

Happy practicing! RIP to the goat Juan Tamariz

Ideas on effects after you've controlled their card to the bottom?

Upvotes

So I've had alot of fun doing the DNB 2.0 spread control by Franco Pascali, and i know subway. But im unsure of other effects you can do once you have their card to the bottom, or just in a cull. I just usually show that their card is on bottom which isn't too powerful i feel.

Looking for more good magic to watch / take from!

Upvotes

I've been doing this card magic for about 6 months.

I want to watch more magic with the intention of both enjoying it as I still do despite often knowing roughly how things are done, and to improve my repertoire and performance style.

At the moment I watch a lot of:

- David Blaine

- Ben Earl (I subscribe to the family)

- Asi Wind

- Harrison Kramer

What are some other magicians I should be watching? I much prefer magic with as little gimmick as possible and that is catered for more of a street magic environment, although I am getting into more table based stuff recently!

Any help appreciated!

Trick Suggestions

Upvotes

Hi all, after showing off some tricks, I’ve found I really enjoy the reaction I get out of sleights that involve the spectator thinking a card is in one spot but turns out to be a different card, like this:

https://youtu.be/tmpw0wc6DdM?is=h7Cv6VYNLtdK_m0e

Or:

Can you all suggest some more tricks like these?
