My pet πŸ•Š Taffy and Cocoa joined my sister and me while gaming

Taffy: male silky crested ringneck dove

Cocoa: male tangerine ringneck dove

My sister and I were playing an online game together, and Taffy and Cocoa flew over to hang out with her. Because I was in another room, she had her camera on and pointed at the doves so that I could see them while we played together. The last two photos are of Taffy from my sister's point of view and mine πŸ₯° (Please ignore the messy table. You know how it be sometimes)

Fun little story! When I came up to my sister in game, Taffy started trying to peck the eyeballs of my in-game character trying to eat them πŸ˜‚

My pet πŸ•Š Angie is the living proof against the myth of only fledglings/squeakers being easily trainable and tamable

Upvotes

I got Angie when he was already a bit over 2 months old from a breeder, he's a bit over 3 years old now. He's a purebred roller breed and his parents were showbirds. Temperament wise he's an absolutely perfect bird, he's extremely docile for a pigeon and is very friendly even despite the fact that he wasn't really handled as a baby by the breeder. But despite that he is also very easy to handle and doesn't get stressed by being handled.

As you can see he's Very eager to do some training, before deciding he's done with it and going to eat from a feeder afterwards, but I like to give my birds an option to say when they want to stop training. After bringing Angie home it took him roughly a week before he would eat from my hand for the first time and a month before he would eat from my hand confidently enough to be willing to start clicker training. Eventually he would start coming to me on his own even without any food involved.

Many people are made to believe the lie that only very young pigeons who are still squeakers can be tame and trainable, but that's absolutely not true and it even directly harms the pigeons because they shouldn't be separated from their parents before reaching at least 2 months of age. Pigeons less than 2 months old tend to not handle the stress of being separated from their parents well at all and tend to shut down and refuse to eat even If they could already eat seeds on their own. Pigeons that young will easily starve themselves to death, but also being force fed at the fledgling age can make them be afraid of people/hands. Being handfed and/or separated from their parents at less than 2 months old does Not make them tamer or friendlier, in fact most of those birds end up being not very sociable and end up with a ton of behavioral issues like extreme aggression or skittishness.

I thought I would share Angie to show others that fully grown pigeons (and doves too!) are very much trainable and that they can be friendly towards people too. It just depends on the bird's genetic temperament.

Question ❓ Seed mix

Upvotes

I was just wondering if Hagens pigeon and dove mix is a good seed for a perhaps future dove.

Question ❓ Well that was unexpected

Upvotes

Hi! I don't really know how to post this but here it is. My male and female dIamonds have started doing something that I don't really understand?

He is feeding her? Kinda like how they feed their supposed babies. They have never done that before so I am kinda confused of that behaviour that came out the blue, they still behave normaly/eat/play etc.. just from time to time he does that, and she ask for it too.

Should I stop it or is it fully normal and my birds are just a little slow?

I am moving and can't take my three ring-necked doves with me. There is a tan male, a white male, and a white female. They are approximately 3-4 years old and are very tame. They live in Santa Clarita, California. Contact: [stephenwilliams59@yahoo.com](mailto:stephenwilliams59@yahoo.com)

Question ❓ Face masks for cleaning?

Upvotes

I am currently researching and hopefully preparing for a future ringneck dove, and I was wondering: is it recommended that I use a face mask when cleaning? I saw a YouTube video about cleaning that said to use a mask to avoid any health problems. Any input would be appreciated!

About diamond doves

Upvotes

I have a simple question: should I get one diamond dove or two? I know they're better in pairs, but I was just wondering, since ringneck doves, especially males, are a bit loud sometimes, lol.

Found bird πŸ“ Is this a dove and will it be ok?

It was on my car which was parked under some big pine trees and I had to scoop it up so my dog wouldn’t attack it. I’m guessing it’s a mourning dove as I’m located in west Michigan and we see a few of those around this time of the year. Does it look like a normal fledgling to you guys or does he need more help?

I have been feeding these two goofy birds on the sidewalk near my building. It was a once a week thing but recently they are waiting for me. They spot me then fly down and waddle up to me. Spotted doves are much larger than the zebra doves. These guys are the size of small rock pigeons. A year ago I didn't know the difference.

Note picture 2 the guy is struggling with wind.

Question ❓ Can someone tell me if this grit is safe for a Barbary/Ringneck dove?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

It didn't say what was on it but it was 2$ I don't know a lot about grit because my parents stopped buying it for my dove when I was a kid (for context I grew up with my bird and I didn't know a lot about doves and im working on improving his life currently because his cage is just too small and my parents knew NOTHING about doves when they got me him as a kid and im just super angry about not being able to give him the space he needs at this time in my life. He is otherwise a healthy bird but im working on upgrading his cage as hes a single dove and hes currently not able to come out as much anymore because of my living situation. If anyone could be of help as to give me some tips id really appreciate it. Just wanna make sure I can feed him grit that wont hurt him before committing to this one if its safe. I also desperately would love tips on what sort of cage i can get him because I know his current one is too small for sure and have for some time now. (For context i am getting help with funds by helping my sister who i currently live with and we are slowly working up to save for a new cage and stuff for him because im currently unemployed and due to my own disabilities and where im living its HARD to get hired. If anyone wants to see his current cage i can shoot you a dm. 😭✌️

Diet Question Food suggestions

Upvotes

I currently feed my ECD Des Moines feed no corn special. I find she never eats the white proso millet. It feels like waste to be throwing away. Is there a good feed available in the states (South FL) not containing it?
