Well... Yes. A blockade is a tool to achieve a geopolitical objective.

u/Amoral_Abe 5h ago

Plus... it was literally the stated goal sooooo....... yeah... I think that's probably what the US wants.

u/GreenShirt18 7h ago

which by the way has never worked in the history of using it. turns out when they are forced to penny pinch, the people go hungry.

u/nthpwr 5h ago

Bro has never read about a single war in history 😭

u/NotRote 6h ago

Literally has worked hundreds of time in history what the fuck are you on about. WW1, WW2, American Civil War, all good examples of the powers of economic blockade, and yes the whole point is that people go hungry. That's what makes them overthrow their government.

None of those examples you listed had a blockade involved

u/Proud_Jello9093 5h ago

in what regard are the massive in some cases decades longs actions against he nations i listed not economic blockades, which is what we're talking about.

u/GreenShirt18 6h ago

I understand the US has done it, and that it is to degrade economic and military capacity. economic sanctions on a nation that is aggressing has never been the deciding capitulating force in US history. also it compels a nation to surrender, notice how every opponent on the other end of USA did not surrender. and then their people starved.

i am of the belief that if the US attacked immediately and decisively with overwhelming force from the getgo instead of a decapitating strike there would not be a need for this. modern wars are not long term things, because it is just so damn difficult to progress and colonize. now we get to sit through the escalation trap and people starving.

u/jpric155 6h ago

Did you just say modern wars are not long term things?

u/GreenShirt18 6h ago

only failed wars are long term

u/Ntroepy 5h ago

They are still modern wars.

It’s hard to argue that “modern wars aren’t long-term things” when the U.S. spent nearly 20 years fighting in Afghanistan, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already lasted 4½ years with no clear end in sight.

Some modern wars can be decided quickly, particularly against much weaker opponents. But Iran is a very different military problem from Venezuela: it’s nearly twice the size, has more than three times the population, a substantially stronger military, difficult defensive terrain, and close strategic relationships with Russia and China. It was never going to be short. Or easy.

u/Kriegersahn 5h ago

Just to make sure I'm understanding you, are you saying that the enemies of the US in WWI, WWII, and the Civil War never surrendered? Or that their eventual surrender was in no way influenced by a blockade?

u/IndividualHouse8628 6h ago

It’s working right now wym

u/MrKyleOwns 7h ago

lol you being serious, that was the stated goal

u/Unlucky_Battle_6947 7h ago

But now it’s coming from their media. Instead of “everything’s fine, we’re fine” to “we’re all doomed cause the US is doomed”

u/GarnetOblivion1 7h ago

Well…. Yeah?

u/Not_Cleaver 7h ago

I’m pretty sure the U.S. has claimed likewise.

u/WongUnglow 6h ago

It's raining outside, but for those of you who may venture in it, be advised it contains water and can make you wet.

u/Eazy-Eid 7h ago

Yeah that's the point and it's looking more and more likely

u/PopeSaintHilarius 7h ago edited 4h ago

Can you elaborate? What is making it look more likely?

EDIT: thanks for the answers, and I'm puzzled by the number of downvotes I got for simply asking a question related to the topic...

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 7h ago

Their currency is on free fall and so is their exports cause blockade

u/Demalab 6h ago

Iran’s or America’s?

u/wcsib01 6h ago

This one feels pretty obvious, cmon bb

u/JD0x0 7h ago

The blockade on Iran's ports seems to be quite effective. They're losing what little leverage they had.

u/Swoah 7h ago

They took a shot at an aircraft carrier, that seems to be a first. Wonder if it’s a sign of desperation, or just something else

u/Dixiehusker 7h ago

It feels absolutely like desperation. I think they know they don't have the remaining resources to destroy an aircraft carrier, so it has to be more so out of desperation, or for a new narrative, which would likely also be out of desperation.

u/Lowfi-Concert 5h ago

It’s not the first shot they’ve made at an aircraft carrier

u/Thisguymoot 6h ago

They are in a use it or lose it scenario, so we’ll definitely be seeing more of it. For the IRGC, fighting now is better than fighting later as their leverage is reduced in the strait.

u/meerkat2018 5h ago

They are losing even the ability to pay full salaries to their police and lower level IRGC members. This is going on amid broader economic collapse. I mean, IRGC soldiers and their children and family members still have to live in Iranian society, so there are other important implications arising with the current situation.

u/jazir55 3h ago

Which begs the question of why this wasnt done much earlier

u/NotSoSalty 2h ago

Because Americans didn't wanna pay 5-6$ a gallon on gas and renewables were garbage a few years ago. Plus the rest of the world has been bitching out America for acting as world police for decades.

u/jazir55 2h ago

I meant earlier in the war not prior

u/PalantirImperator 1h ago

Wasn't it started pretty early on? It takes a while to take effect.

u/jazir55 1h ago

~6 weeks into the war

u/CallMeGlarthir 7h ago

That's the idea

u/Swoah 7h ago

God willing

u/JackC1126 7h ago

Brilliant analysis

u/GoRangers5 7h ago

Avril Lavigne said it best “Can it get anymore obvious?”

u/HotTubMike 7h ago

Here is hoping.

u/mca1169 6h ago

The IRGC is already doing a better job of collapsing the Iranian economy than anything the US can do.

u/Designer_Professor_4 7h ago

The Iranian version of captain obvious?

u/KenUsimi 5h ago

No kidding? Man, they’re really telling it how it is, aren’t they? No fooling these eagle-eyed detectives!

u/No_Bet_4427 7h ago

And it’s working. Iran can’t pay its soldiers or Basijis in anything but Monopoly money.

When the next round of protests start, they might switch sides.

u/Demalab 6h ago

Thought I had read similar about American military.

u/MacaronMost 6h ago

You thought, huh?

Try your best to read that again and then cite the source. Sharing is caring.

u/eedewah 3h ago

You clearly don't do much thinking

u/UsefolIdiot 7h ago

Please and thank you. Could the Islamic Republic actually see what the wish of its people and the region wants without the need for violence then we wouldn't be here.

u/WorstFkGamer 7h ago

Nahh they will gladly die on that hill and take everyone else with them.

u/creamgetthemoney1 7h ago

Easy to say from across the world. I’m sure for every Iranian who wants this issue to be over there is another who really believes there is no other options than death or defeating America.

We don’t see much of Iran on a everyday basis , for whatever reason but it’s pretty clear that they have millions of die hard individuals who would rather die than be defeated by US

Kind of like in America where there is definitely a 75 million racist ass ppl but the larger population are normal. Those 75 million are much louder/dumb/easily influenced so it’s what takes control.

Normal Americans couldn’t even stop maga. You think everyday Iranians with no weapons are going to be able to stop die hard Iranians who have all the pew pew’s?

u/dk00111 7h ago

While I get where you’re coming from, the diehard supporters make up much less than 50% of the country, which is what your first paragraph implies.

u/Flimsy_Sun4003 6h ago

That first paragraph didn't imply anything other than a straight read of the words.

You inferred, op did not imply, but nice way to shut down the conversation.

u/iamwayycoolerthanyou 6h ago

Well, it gets bigger when the United States commits a 9/11 every week for six weeks, then fakes a deal, then attacks during Khameni's funeral. Imagine how they feel right now. And ideologically, they definitely don't want to submit to Israel.

u/Afscm 7h ago

We also wouldn't be here if Bibi and Trump haven't decided to attack Iran..........

u/JD0x0 7h ago

Iran (specifically the IRGC) is funding virtually every terrorist group in the Middle East, while also trying to build nukes. They were the main benefactor in the October 7th terrorist attacks. The Houthis have been disrupting sea trade for years. Hezbollah invaded Lebanon to attack Israel.

Iran had this shit coming for a while.

u/Soangry75 6h ago

Skipping a few steps there

u/TheDecepticonIdeal 7h ago

Can we please ask the US the same 🙏

u/macross1984 7h ago

You mean collapse Islamic Theocracy "Republic?"

Of course, the whole purpose of blockade is strangulation of resource.

u/Neuralink666 7h ago

What level chess are we on now and who’s winning?

u/atrde 5h ago

Breaking: Stated goal of chess game is to checkmate the king per Iranian Lawmaker

u/GameOfThrownaws 1h ago

“The checking of the king is not actually the objective, but a tool and a means,” said Abbas Goudarzi, spokesperson for parliament’s presiding board. “The enemy is seeking the checkmate of our king and wants to increase dissatisfaction with the board position and create the conditions for its broader strategy.”

u/KeepCalmCarryOnKY 7h ago

47D chess, because duh

u/eskimospy212 7h ago

So ‘maximum pressure’?

u/Curious_Proof_5882 5h ago

No duh. Maybe they shouldn’t have overextended their ace card of the strait

u/NewYak4281 6h ago

I thought it was just for funsies

u/chriskot123 6h ago

I mean yea wtf.

u/No-Helicopter7299 6h ago

Everyone agrees then. Loll.

u/GandalfTheSexay 5h ago

At least Iran and the USA agree on something!

u/Acrobatic-Ostrich168 4h ago

Iran lawmaker says American US strikes meant to destroy Iranian military targets

u/Wermys 35m ago

Well yeah. That is obvious.

u/Martha_Fockers 7h ago

prolapse

u/Flimsy_Share_7606 7h ago

I don't really understand the endgame here. It's not starving a regime, but an entire country. Is the goal to create a civil war that ends in a bloodbath and maybe somebody less extreme takes over? Is it to create a mass refugee crisis? Is it to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people to make some kind of point? It's not like the IRGC says "well we are broke, I guess we will just hold some democratic elections and let the people decide what moderate candidates they want to run the country now. GG."

I mean in a simplistic neanderthal sort of reasoning it is "stop Iran from doing bad things" but what about all the steps in-between here and there? Is any consideration given to that or is it just "not america's problem"?

u/Kind_Conclusion1911 7h ago

Irans the closest thing to a big game target any president has gone after in a long time. They are a trade partner with Russia and China so there is reasonable understanding on paper why you’d want them (and their oil) working more for your side. As for the execution of this war, Trump failed to recognize how much of a grip the military dictatorship has on their country.

u/I_Push_Buttonz 6h ago

I don't really understand the endgame here.

Trump has just been trying to undo the war and go back to status quo ante bellum because the whole thing blew up in his face, is wildly unpopular among even among his own base, and has caused a global oil crisis. Iran has thus far insisted that the Strait of Hormuz is theirs to control and toll now and forever. The blockade is meant to pressure Iran into relinquishing that claim. Months of blockading their oil exports is months of them not generating oil revenues (which is where their government got most of money)... That's also months of people not getting paid (notably, all the armed forces who allow them to control the country), months of reduced imports, months of all manners of scarcity, months of growing discontent, and months of mounting internal pressure.

Trump wants Iran to cry uncle and agree to a new deal, one that almost certainly won't even deal with their nuclear ambitions, which was ostensibly the entire reason he started the war in the first place, and will just focus on restoring Hormuz to how it was.

u/Flimsy_Share_7606 6h ago

I sort of get that, but at the same time that doesn't really change the calculus. The IRGC has tens of billions of dollars and hidden bunkers. You tell the jeff bezos of the world they aren't allowed to make new money for six months and that is...not even remotely important to their ability to pay hired guns to keep them in power. Sucks for everyone else. They can pay militant thugs for a very long time though.

So it still comes down to the people lead an incredibly bloody revolt and maybe the winner doesn't hate America and Israel for some reason? Or Mass refugee crisis as insane poverty causes people to flee the country en masse. Or just mass starvation while people with guns and food stand on walls to make sure nobody gets too violent. Either way this leads to a mass humanitarian crisis. And if the hope is that the people the American government calls insane violent martyrs just decide to give America what it wants because it's bad for Iranian citizens....that seems beyond naive.

u/hellranger788 6h ago

Y'know what sucks? Before Trump got involved and made a mess of everything, the regime in Iran killed alot of students earlier this year. The only thing Trump has accomplished is making the same murderous regime look like victims just by how badly Trump has handled the matter. The constant back and forth between "We have won!" to "I shall rain fire and brimstone down!" has only made Iran look, dare I say it, better.

The iranian people deserve better then being crushed inbetween by an orange fool with an ego the size of a moon, and a brutal regime fueled by zealotry and brutality.

u/Frequent_Slip2455 1h ago

That scum bag regime has been killing innocent Iranians for years!! F them!

u/stiffgerman 6h ago

"The iranian people deserve better then being crushed inbetween by an orange fool with an ego the size of a moon, and a brutal regime fueled by zealotry and brutality."

So...how do you solve that problem? What usually happens is that there's a diaspora of the people caught in the middle. The problem is, Iranians aren't very welcome in large numbers anywhere. Like the Palestinians. Why is that, I wonder?

u/DerpiDanger 5h ago

Hope it works.

u/bad_syntax 5h ago

Oh yeah, I'm sure that'll work.

u/kashkoi_wild 7h ago

I believe it when I will see it.

u/Impressive_Okra2804 7h ago

How are they gonna starve a country that's an ally of Russia and/or China???

u/CarlLinnaeus 7h ago

A landlocked country whose main agricultural region is at its furthest point from the ocean on an inland sea the USA cannot access.

u/TheDecepticonIdeal 7h ago

And it shares a private sea route with Russia

u/Severe_Air_4353 7h ago

Doing the same to Canada and Mexico and eu, USA are the new hermits like North Korea that only trade with Russia.

u/Martha_Fockers 7h ago

*Taiwan we only wanna trade with Taiwan

u/landothedead 7h ago

"If we just blockade everyone and... Wait a minute."
