No talks scheduled as Canada's counter-tariffs against U.S. set to take effect at 12:01 a.m.

We’ve had talks.
It’s just been mostly one sided with insults via the media, memes and AI slop posted on social media.

Welcome to living with right wing nut jobs. They are mainly uneducated, no college degree and this is the only way they can communicate.
•
u/GoldTrade11 8h ago
Yet like all trump fueds. The media keeps blaming both sides for rolling in the dirt. At a certain point you have to call out the common denominator in these dirty fights and that is trump.
•
u/eco_celosia 16h ago
As a Canadian, the Canadian and American Alliance was once one of the most stable alliances in the whole world. But Trump managed to fuck up decades of trust by threatening to annex a country that's always been there for America. Good riddance.
•
u/One_Handed_Typing 15h ago
But Trump managed to fuck up decades of trust
American voters, 77 million of them, fucked it up.
We can't hand wave this away as this administration fucking things up. The American public is to blame too.
•
u/nzerinto 14h ago
Along with the nearly 90 million who didn’t bother voting or were so apathetic they were fine with whichever candidate won.
So it’s actually nearly 170 million Americans….
•
u/Snow_Tiger819 13h ago
This. It’s not mentioned enough. 90 million people couldn’t see any difference between Trump and Harris. Or they couldn’t be bothered to look.
I know politics can seem boring, and like nothing ever changes, but good grief.

American voters, 77 million of them, fucked it up.
No, it's all of them.
The ones that wouldn't vote. The ones that votes for a party their own members didn't want to vote for and didn't push it to change. The ones that saw things go pear shape and made no changes and made no distance.
The ones that today won't do more than "apologies" and wait for something or someone to save them, or worse just accepts it.

It wasn't stable and always favoured the us in every way shape and form.
•
u/Electroflare5555 16h ago
Absolutely - NORAD exists almost completely for the benefit of the US, not us. No one is launching ICBMs at us across the pole
•
u/fer_sure 16h ago
Yeah, but we would have caught nuclear fallout from the destruction of all the missile silos in North Dakota.
•
•
•
u/DisastrousAcshin 11h ago
No kidding. The plan was always for missiles and bombers from Russia to be shot down over Canadian territory
•
u/socialistrob 15h ago
It was a mutually beneficial relationship. Canada prospered because of the rules based order that enabled global trade and relative security. Carney outlines this fact in his Davos speech. Trump then came along and tried to replace mutual cooperation and benefit with US domination and a rejection of Canadian sovereignty.

The midterms are literally in November; people are going to vote. America has 250 years of voting. Most of the country thinks that is the appropriate solution at the moment as voting has a good track record. As someone working as normal civil servant in the government and someone how has studied international relations, I am WELL aware of the sheer damage Trump has done. A lot of people are using their energy to make sure that Congress will change and actually do its job.
•
u/Federal-Piglet 16h ago
As an American. Good! Make him sweat and make midterms a death note to this dark chapter in US history.
•
u/Academic_Hunter4159 16h ago
I’ll believe it when I see it.
I remember similar rhetoric maybe a year ago and nothing changed.
That administration gets away with everything and nobody with any ability to change that or hold them accountable doesn’t do anything meaningful.
I think my last point speaks volumes.
•
u/NearbyAd3320 8h ago
Even when Trump is gone, all the americans that voted for it AND those who didnt but choose to do nothing will still be there. America is rotten and idk what it would take to reverse the malice and idiocy that has spread like a contagion.
•
u/Academic_Hunter4159 6h ago
This actually worries me the most. That this may be the new reality regardless of who is in that seat.
And if it were to shift back to what used to be, I can’t imagine Canadians forgetting it all.
I mean how do they trust again? Can they trust again?
•
u/Cultist_O 4h ago
We cannot, no
We can be friends again, if the US puts in the work, but never what we were. At least not for a few generations.
•
u/GoldTrade11 8h ago
I remember similar rhetoric maybe a year ago and nothing changed.
We have to say it. There is a portion of the American population that loves the degeneracy. It is a feature not a bug.
•
u/Academic_Hunter4159 6h ago
Yeah it’s such a shame. I don’t know what else to say. Nothing they’ve done has changed anything for the better except for the ruling class maybe.
•
u/SouthernLampPost530 15h ago
More like both partys made sure the laws don't hurt their bottom lines. Everything that holds them accountable has been watered down. So nothign gonna happen imo.

Congress has 2 major powers that will destroy trump
Power of the purse. They can call bullshit on his tariffs and kill it. They can refund his plans. A good example no DoD budget and thus trump has to just leave Iran as no one had money to fight
Power of investigation. They can start subpoena all of his corruption laying it out. He then needs a pardon to stop congress. He can't pardon himself. So he has to step down for Vance to pardon him. Vance isn't the cult head. He won't keep maga together
•
u/A-Wise-Cobbler 15h ago
They’re not going to get a super majority in the Senate. Congress is gridlocked on everything. He’s already reappropriated funds or refused to spend them.
His officials ignored subpoenas when they weren’t even in power and just went to jail for a bit .
•
•
u/MerlinsMentor 16h ago
he always bypasses Congress anyway
In the current Congress, it's more that they, specifically Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House of Representatives, is a Trump sycophant who refuses to fulfill his oath of office when it comes to serving the legal constitution of the US. At least five of the nine supreme court justices are the same, and that's not changing anytime soon, so a Congress that actually provides oversight to Trump's executive branch is really the only realistic option. Which is why he's trying to hard to prevent people (Democratic-leaning voters, anyway) from voting in the midterm elections.
•
u/SpinDoctorWho 16h ago
Just a note that the whole problem with this is that Trump won’t sweat. Not one bit.
The American people (you) will feel 100% of it.

Honestly. Everyone being hopeful for the midterms to make a difference I fear are in for a rude awakening, there’s absolutely no way they will give up any power
•
u/Express_Upstairs_668 15h ago
It won't change any needle with the midterms even the Dems win by landslide. The society fracture inside the US population now is not redeemable. Their democracy system is turning into the toxic of vengeance and hatred between parties.
•
u/GlitteringLychee803 16h ago
No. The Dems fix elections, not the GOP. Which is why the GOP has to cheat in order to make it fair.
/s in case it's not obvious
•
•
u/CarolineTurpentine 10h ago
Americans don't have it in them, if they've done nothing so far the midterms won't change a damn thing: they are complacent.
•
u/Ok_Cold9067 12h ago
As a Canadian this delusional passivity is why your country is so fucked. Trump dying/losing/etc. changes almost nothing.
America has bullied Canada in trade negotiations for my whole life, American politicians and talking heads have talked about annexing us on TV for over 20 years. This didn't start with him. It doesn't end with him. One vote isn't changing squat about the rot inside of the empire and going back to business as usual afterwards is why you got Trump 2.0 in the first place.
Buckle up, the ride has barely started.
•
u/saucyzeus 7h ago
Aware and counting on it. America needs a good humbling in order to not balkanize in the medium term.
•
u/Express_Upstairs_668 15h ago
The pandora box has already opened. The sacred pact has already broken. Nothing will guarantee this dark chapter end with the next administration. Biden administration has already proven this. If there anything else, it is the Canada that needs to get better in everything rather than rely heavily on untrustworthy neighbor, it once dependable.
•
u/CrazyCatLushie 13h ago
I have to ask: Do y’all really think there’s going to be an election? A fair election? It seems bonkers to me (a Canadian and an outsider) that you all think your authoritarian dictator is going to willingly risk losing power.
You know it isn’t going to happen, right?
→ More replies (6)•
u/A-Wise-Cobbler 15h ago
I’ll be shocked if Congress flips. Most of your electorate votes on ideological lines and about a third of them thinks elections are stolen and the man saying they’re stolen is in charge.
•
u/Federal-Piglet 15h ago
Every poll has congress flipping. It question of if senate does
•
u/A-Wise-Cobbler 10h ago
Congress includes the House and Senate.
If one doesn’t flip Congress hasn’t flipped.
And even if both flip they’re not getting a super majority in the Senate.
•
u/ScarletCarsonRose 16h ago
We're cutting back on spending any way. Cost of just basics is too high. Canada is better off short and long term building trade relationships with other countries, especially a rising China.

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 12h ago
The fact that it is not a certainty is your clear sigh he's a symptom not the problem, and temporarily flipping to the other party isn't gonna change anything meaningful.

I haven’t been really paying attention for a bit. I thought that it was ruled that trumps tariffs weren’t legal. How is he able to tariff Canada?
•
u/Never_51 16h ago
They found some other archaic law from decades ago that they are completely abusing.
•
u/Hashtagworried 16h ago
Does this law permit him to tariff Canada specifically or all countries again?
•
u/Never_51 16h ago
Looks like he can use the act against any country that they can lie about discriminating against US commerce.
"The new tariffs rely on Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which expressly allows the president to impose additional duties when another country discriminates against U.S. commerce. Canada responded Tuesday with retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion in U.S. goods scheduled to take effect Sept. 8."
•
u/Agitated-Shoe7502 11h ago
sidenote: This would be the same set of laws that helped to trigger the Great Depression in the 30s, IIRC.

u/Taitertottot 16h ago edited 16h ago
It's crazy that a lot of people in the US think all time tariffs have been removed.
The Canadian tariffs were never removed.

u/ferwhatbud 13h ago
Yup, going to suck, but we also had no choice in the matter.
Given the wholly unprovoked attack by our neighbour (who we’ve gone out of our way to be good to, as one should), the current approach is our only real option so best to just hunker down and muddle through it as we work towards better days, with better friends.
•
u/Euclidisthebomb 16h ago
The Canadian government actually had military discussions at the diplomatic level this weekend with the Govt of China. For the first time since 2017/2018. Carney knows how to play the diplomacy game and we will see much more of it this week. We saw the announcement last week about Canada & New Zealand trade negotiations.
Trump looks like he is going off the deep end on every thought that enters his brain, and no one in his administration is acting as a check and balance. I wonder if he will even make it to the mid-terms. He is well into the dementia spiral and its going to accelerate not slow down.
America is about to encounter some devastating price shocks across a broad range of goods and services due to Iran, the tariff wars with Canada and other countries and just devastatingly poor management by the Trump govt.
Canadian understand that there may be difficulties going forward but they also see the new conduits of economic activity that are being developed.
•
u/Firepower01 13h ago
Carney is the deal maker Trump wishes he was, honestly. He's been signing deals over the place.

u/SloppyPlatypus69 16h ago

Thanks. It's weird how the time is precise to the minute, but could be 3 hours off because they don't mention time zone.
•
u/XiahouMao 11h ago
I go on the assumption that the time zone in question is the capital of the nation, so Eastern time for Ottawa (and DC).
•
u/Hollowgirl136 15h ago
So once these go into effect, Trump is probably going to do more tariff charges as payback for this counter-tariff isn't he.
•
u/Chareon 15h ago
Wasn't his most recently thing threatening to cut off all trade?
•
u/DromarX 14h ago
Yeah he said if he just stopped all teade with Canada he would save Americans $70 billion a year or something. As though he wouldn't have to replace the oil they get from us with other (likely more expensive) sources lol.
•
u/NearbyAd3320 8h ago
So stupid lol it's like Joe Schmo saying "I could save thousands by not buying food. Im gonna grow my own"
Good luck getting thru the winter!
•
u/Sweet_and_Sassy88 15h ago
Last I heard, he has them set to start in January (I think it was January, but could be wrong).
•
u/XiahouMao 15h ago
Trump delayed implementation of his tariffs until next year, because he doesn't want the increased price on so many things to affect the midterms. Canada imposing the counter-tariffs tomorrow before Trump's tariffs actually take effect might spook him into doing something earlier, which would then hurt him going into the midterms.
I imagine his handlers/yes-men are tripping over themselves trying to figure out a way to placate him without torpedoing their election chances.
•
u/becomingarobot 14h ago

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Canada turns off the electricity switch. We get a good portion of our power in the Northern border states from Canada.

u/I_Push_Buttonz 15h ago
It'll be interesting to see what happens when Canada turns off the electricity switch.
Indeed.
https://www.capp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Canadian-Imports-of-US-Products-October-17-2025.pdf
Ontario and Quebec are particularly vulnerable. About half of the natural gas these provinces consume is imported from the U.S. Additionally, Ontario depends entirely on crude oil delivered via the U.S., with no immediate alternatives available. Quebec also relies on crude oil transiting the U.S. for about 60% of its refinery consumption.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)•
u/mcsul 7h ago
Canada gets a larger share of it's electricity from the US than the US gets from Canada, so I'm pretty sure that no one serious is considering cutting off power exports.
Ultimately, Canadian exports to the US account for about 1% of total US electricity consumption. It's more for some regions. Vermont gets 50%-ish, if I remember.
The real question is how quickly grid operators could rebalance loads and how much prices in New England would rise. Beyond that, it would be mostly an inconvenience economically, though obviously a big deal politically and diplomatically. Loss of revenue to the Ontario and Quebec governments would be a mess.
People really have to stop thinking that any Canadian government would play the electricity card.

Setting it for today puts it on riiiiight before the Republican National Congress, where you'll see a mix of absent seats because half the party aren't turning up because they don't want to be associated with Trump's crappy numbers (note, not his policies), and people worried about the impacts these counter-tariffs will have on their chances of re-election once their constituents are affected.
