Ken'neka attended a party in a room at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (Rosemont) on the night of September 8 2017, and was found dead in a walk-in freezer the next day. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the death accidental hypothermia from cold exposure.

Surveilance video showed her walking into the kitchen and freezer alone and no one entered before or after she was in. The freezer did not lock and had a working interior release/latch so it could be opened from inside.

The room was booked with a fraudulent credit card tied to identity theft. Police said the people who reserved it were affiliated with a West Side Chicago gang.

The family sued for $50 million, alleging the hotel was negligent for leaving the kitchen/freezer area accessible. The case settled in 2023 for $10 million and the family upgraded the gravestone after receiving the funds
