u/throwaway_1053 6h ago
Theyโre not any really whiter than anybody native to Europe (esp. Southern Europe but even other native Europeans look like that) if they were ย mostly Christian then people would surely percrive them as an extension of Greek people
•
•
u/Narco_Marcion1075 9h ago
If Italians and Greeks are white, then so are they
•
u/fumeurdecig 7h ago
Now if I'm not mistaken turks have a lot of kazakh genes

It's a transcontinental country, it's both in Asia and in Europe (only for a bit though). I don't get the African connection though, unless you're going back all the way to the Ottoman times
•
u/CustodianCloset The Teto guy who likes Economics 10h ago
Yeah I'm mostly referring to the Ottoman empire and it's influence/relations with Africa. Modern day Turkey doesn't really have that but that wasn't the case for like, 90% of it's history.

•
•
u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 9h ago
Turkey is famously a predominantly Muslim european country
•
u/TARDISMapping Da Devil 7h ago
Turkey is famously not European. It has a small amount of territory in Europe, but that doesn't make it European any more than Hawaii makes the US a Pacific Island nation. French Guiana is in South America and comprises much more of French territory than Turkey's European holdings, you'd be hard pressed to find someone saying that France is a South American nation.
•
u/throwaway98919143 5h ago
while i agree calling turkey a european nation is incorrect, i disagree with the comparison to french guiana, because nearly 1/4th of the turkish population lives in the european part, and istanbul was one of the most important cities for european history and culture. it also has a much more direct connection to "metropolitan" turkey than guiana does to metropolitan france. i think the much more convincing question is how the nation is involved culturally and diplomatically with other parts of the world. but the debate about whether or not turks are europeans is completely irrelevant to the post, where the problem is whether theyre "white," which like, no they are not, quite obviously
•
u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 7h ago
French Guiana is a possession of France, not France. Try again.
•
u/throwaway98919143 5h ago
no, legally it is 100% french and has the same rights, laws, and duties as every other french administrative region, and is also part of the european union.
•
u/TARDISMapping Da Devil 7h ago
Integrated into the Republic formally in 1946, it quite literally is France.
•
u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 6h ago
It is ultimately irrelevant. To talk about anything but contiguous land contributes nothing
•
u/TARDISMapping Da Devil 6h ago edited 6h ago
Well, you shouldn't be talking about Turkey either, then. It's separated by the Bosphorus. And I suppose Northern Ireland must not be a part of the UK, then. And Alaska doeen't count in America, does it? New Zealand's made up of two disconnected islands, which is the only one that counts? Suppose Indonesia must seem really small to you.
•
u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 6h ago
I'm gonna keep it a stack, I just shouldn't try to debate geography while drinking.

Gotta love people who go so hard with the condescension when they're completely wrong. Turkiye is politically not part of the EU, and geographically 97% of it is part of Asia.
•
u/loptthetreacherous 10h ago
Okay, but that means someone can have a White dad from the 3% of Tรผrkiye that is European and a Pakistani mother and that would make them White and Asian.
I don't see what the EU has to do with this. I'm a white European who isn't in an EU country.
•
u/Ringosis 9h ago
...I'm seriously confused why you think someone would have to be from the European part of Turkiye to be white. Guess what...you could be a White Asian when both your parents are from China.
•
u/loptthetreacherous 3h ago edited 3h ago
How are you defining white person? I know race is a very vague term, but light skinned Europeans seem pretty definitively inside the broader category of white.
•
u/Ringosis 1h ago
Lol... I'm defining white people as people who are white? There literally isn't a country on the planet with no white people. So again...why do you think they would have to be from the European part of Turkiye to be white?
Race has fuck all to do with location.

u/Ringosis 10h ago
Lol racist? I listed two indisputable facts.
Turkiye is almost entirely in Asia and countries do not have to be in Europe to be part of the EU. See Cyprus...100% in the Middle East. Currently an EU member.

u/Ringosis 10h ago
Lol for fuck sake mate. At no point did it even enter my mind what colour people in Turkiye are until YOU brought it up.
I'm simply stating fact. Turkiye is neither politically or geographically part of Europe. 15% of the population live in the 3% of the landmass that's part of the European continent. Both its people and it's land are predominantly Asian. Joining the EU wouldn't change that.
The only thing that could be construed as racism here is you seemingly thinking me suggesting Turkiye is in Asia is some kind of insult. What do you have against Asia? Why are you denying reality?

i mean white is a social construct and in many cases they fit that description
•
u/InteRagebaitJagLovar 11h ago

•
u/Xanadoodledoo 9h ago
It depends on if the person judging them is aware theyโre Turkish. If they have an American accent and itโs not clear that theyโre Muslim (either practicing or ancestrally) then they can pass as Greek and therefore white.

Asian is a race specifically referring to people from north-east Asia and Turkish and Pakistani people are neither Asian nor white. Why do you people not understand this.
