What country is this? If its the US it would breach the fair housing act unless its a room in an existing lease or owner occupied.
•
u/AmbiTheAirforceRuna 4d ago
And in the EU too, but the thing is, its only gonna be a breach if someone reports it. Most of us just scroll past it cose its almost always a creep looking for a wife who pays to be there.
(In uni there was an ad for one where id have to have no guests over unless they were also women, help with cleaning his house I was meant to live in, and had a curfew)
•
u/FaithlessnessBorn266 4d ago
That's usually what it is. Somebody renting out an extra room. At least from what I've seen in states
•
u/AwkwardBet5632 3d ago
It is still a breach to advertise the fact.
•
u/pleasehelpteeth 3d ago
No its not. Theres explciit exemptions withing the fair housing act.
There is nothing illegal about someone posting they are looking for a new roomate but they only want women or men.

u/complexiblebarracuda 4d ago
hey if they're a huge bigot you just have to trick them into saying "You'll never be a girl" and then you're goldenĀ
•
u/fake_frank 4d ago
I mean, you can just kinda lie to your landlord and say you're a dude that just happens to take estrogen, or at the very least genderfluid so you're always male when you live there. No matter what angle he'd take you'd come on top since your sex is on paper as male, and if going by gender you decide.
There's people who take testosterone and estrogen for health reasons, where their natural body balance is out of whack, but them taking or not taking those doesn't change their gender, so any BS about having x amount of estrogen/testosterone in you would be complete bs as a reason to kick you out.

And like /u/pleasehelpteeth said, depending on the size of what it is, you are allowed to discriminate in the US. If it if your home, or you own a small number of apartments, or the apartments are connected to your living space (like a twoflat or something) you are allowed to discriminate.

"Feeling safe" sexism but with extra steps.
•
u/wydaleny_dwoiczy_lod 4d ago
Understandable doesn't mean good, just that I can understand why. I am now irrationally wary of older men due to being SAed by one and can't really get rid of it, which also led to fear of getting old, so I get it
•
u/chuueeriies 4d ago edited 4d ago
Nah I mean, I understand it too. I'm just saying it's kind of funny and very sad how it's acceptable, but if we changed "men" to "black/white/hispanic/etc." people, it would suddenly change the tone dramatically, although it's EXACT same thing.
Prejudice and all that.
But nah, I am not blaming you for seeking comfort and safety, everyone wants that. Sadly we have double standards about what is acceptable and what isn't.
In any case I do understand why it would be needed. I'd rather see people who got assaulted live in environment where they feel completely safe, rather than drown in stress having to live next to people who remind them of the assault every day.
It is sexist, but I'm ok with that. We as a society aren't ready to move past rape/murder/etc.
Off topic, I have no clue why your comments are disliked so much

Soooo, likkkke, WHICH constitution are we talking about? Because while it's implied it isn't explicitly stated in the one that applies here
•
u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 3d ago
The 14th Amendment (US) is pretty explicit about this.
It lead directly to Title IX.
•
u/wydaleny_dwoiczy_lod 3d ago
US
Your first mistake was assuming random post on Internet was made by an American ig
•
u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 3d ago
Meh. Majority of the userbase is American. Itās just natural to assume.
•
u/wydaleny_dwoiczy_lod 3d ago
Less than half of people using reddit are from USA, therefore majority of redditors are non-American. While singularly other countries have less people, when we look at entirety of reddit if you assume someone is American the likelihood of you being right is somewhat less than you guess the side of the coin when flipped, which are not good odds
•
u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 2d ago
And yet, the user demographic from the US is an entire order of magnitude (~10x) higher than the runner up (UK).
If you had to guess randomly, US would still be your best bet. Letās not get pedantic about stats
•
u/wydaleny_dwoiczy_lod 2d ago
Except you don't guess whether the person is from US or a SPECIFIC other country, it would be useless. You guess whether they are from US or not from US and most of the time, they are not
•
u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 2d ago
And who are you to say what I can or canāt guess? Why reduce the assumptions to a binary format?
Itās like assuming Reddit as a whole speaks English, or not English. But I understand Spanish just fine.
•
u/wydaleny_dwoiczy_lod 2d ago
I'm not saying what you can do, I'm saying what you do. By guessing someone is from a specific country, the opposite is them not being from that country, not them being from a specific other country, since this is what determines whether you'd be right or wrong. When there isn't an option that is absolute majority of over 50% it is statistically better to NOT assume specific option, since whatever option you assume, you'll be wrong more often than not

Considering I've been looking for the room, not the whole flat, it was their only home owned, therefore if we'd get rid of anything like that you'd have renting as your ONLY option. Renting from the GOVERNMENT as only landlord. Regulation of the amount of living space owned, and conditions on which it can be rented, is the must, but getting rid of home-owning as a whole would give government too much power that I personally don't trust it with

I got my room in my current house (kinda) this way. It was an all-girl four bedroom house, but one of the room mates transitioned and no longer looked like a girl by the time he moved out. So like it turned into a three girl one boy house I guess.
The weird thing? It wasn't even my female roommate's idea. It was the landlord's. His rationale was that he only wanted one person per room, and girls are less likely to move their boyfriends in so he made that rule to avoid that problem. It was stupid. Anyway my roommates and I get along and we're great friends now.

u/C_ingStarz 4d ago
As a chick I also hate womens-only rent spots. I understand having a couple, but at least in my city there's multiple 5+ floor apartment complexes for women/men only.
It's either that or it's for students only, which I also understand why you'd want a couple around town, but every other online listing having "(prioritizes student applicants)" at the very bottom pmo so bad.
I get having maybe a handful of houses or apartment complexes being dedicated to a specific group of people, but as someone trying to find an apartment for my family (which includes my father and middleschool-aged sibling), it's a pain in the ass.
Especially since we're low income, and all the affordable apartments (under $1200/mo) are either way on the outskirts of town and out of catchment for my school (that I need to attend for it's disability & flexibility programs), or are student/men/women only.
Some also state they "are looking for **insert race/religion/origin country here** applicants", which is absolutely wild when most the buildings aren't in areas of the city that are intended or primarily consist of those groups. Also really illegal but I've never heard of a landlord caring about following the law.
Anyways, this is really specific but since I'm looking for a place it pmtfo.

•
u/Blackadder288 3d ago
This reminds me of a situation I was in. I had a roommate interview with a woman. She told me that while I was her second choice, she decided to go with another young woman as she thought it would be a better match.
Like five years later, I join a bicycling club and I became friends with someone who turned out to be that young woman who was selected over me, and she said I dodged a massive bullet with the original owner. Turns out my gender saved me from a bad roommate situation.

•
u/jelly_wishes 4d ago
In Spain it's pretty common in student apartments. The landlord/landlady doesn't live in the apartment. I rented a room for a few months from a woman who only rented to girls and according to her it's because she had a bad experience cleaning wise with a bunch of male students. She didn't kick them out but basically decided that from that point on, she would only take female tenants and she has been happy with the change. Of course, not all women are clean and not all men are dirty, not at all. But I have to say that in my experience, a female only apartment is typically much cleaner. Not all because all the female tents are clean, but because at least 1 or 2 are, so they compensate for the rest if they don't clean much. Both my partner and a male friend have experienced being the only dude that cleans anything in their respective shared apartments and it's hell. They weren't male-exclusive apartments either, but since there are many female-only apartments, gender neutral ones typically fill up with dudes and women don't want to live there anymore (the exception to that is groups of friends to rent toguether, there are many mixed friend groups).
•
u/Powerful_Net_1873 4d ago
Ā I love how we entered a time in this world where we allow folks to discriminate based on immutable characteristics.Ā
•
u/jelly_wishes 4d ago
It isn't allowed on theory, but it is on practice. I'm not saying I agree, but I do understand. Sadly, I think it is inevitable. Plus many women would rather live with women than with unknown men (myself included) so it will just keep happening.
•
u/Powerful_Net_1873 4d ago
Yeah. I mean, why stop there ya know?Ā
This kind of discrimination is usually a dog whistle for other kinds.Ā
•
u/jelly_wishes 4d ago
Idk but I have had shared an apartment with people of multiple nationalities. Regarding my landlady she had rooms rented to a middle-eastern girl (I don't remember which country exactly), a chinese girl, a japanese girl... She had also previously rented to a couple of African guys, who weren't the ones that motivated the change btw, rather regular white male students. I wouldn't say she was a bad person.
•
u/thjmze21 4d ago
Just because you don't bat an eye at discrimination doesn't make her a bad person. If a man refused to rent to women, that's misogyny. She's a bad person full stop.
•
u/Powerful_Net_1873 4d ago
I mean. Iām not going to administrate your personal history, as itās one example among many.Ā
I too have an example of the experience of a man looking for a room to rent, itās not very positive.Ā
The three postings that were available when I was looking for a room in the East Coast USA, were a frat house, another without parking available, and one other choice that I originally intended to go with, but they had a mold issue on the property.Ā
Had my girlfriend d vouch for me with some other postings due to the limited availability of spaces for men.Ā
Eventually found one really great place, but if I didnāt have someone equipped with a vagina vouching for me, I would have been stuck with some terrible options.Ā
I think this is a privilege I can acknowledge that women have in society that men currently do not.Ā
