The main issue is that she's actively using the profit she makes from the IP to make trans people's lives worse, not so much with the franchise itself, even if her black hole of a personality slips through at times (such as elves as a concept)

Also this may have been a rights issue, as they may have not been able to use other things that would've been popularin universe, typical corporate lawyer BS. Hal was interrogating the individual to see if they were and alien and so he went to wildly popular media that they may have not been trained to recognize.

Also the reason why Hal determines that they're an alien is because this person in western Nebraska in 2016 has no strong opinion on Obama, they even dropped the "Hussan" bit.
