I just visited Warsaw a few weeks ago and I can't shake the feeling of disappointment at how underwhelming the food was.
Context: I am an American, born and raised. My grandparents were Polish immigrants (both passed away before I was born). My mom grew up on traditional Polish food cooked at home, which was passed on to my childhood.
Expectations: I knew that the pierogi I would get in Poland would be different than the Mrs. T's "pierogies" [sic] that I am used to. I know that pączki are not exactly a one-to-one with the American jelly doughnuts I'm used to. ***I knew there would be differences***
I am generally wary of tourist traps and prefer to visit places off the beaten path. I tried to visit a variety of restaurants, milk bars, bakeries, and other eating establishments. Some in central Warsaw (near PKIN), in Old Town, Mokotów, and Ochota.
All of the pierogi that I had (ruskie) seemed to be lacking in flavor. They were hearty, and did taste good... but it just didn't knock my socks off. All of the pastries that I had seemed to be beleaguered by a general staleness. Not just that the item had been sitting on a shelf for a few hours, but rather sitting on shelf for a few days. This goes for items I got at Żabka, bakeries, and cafes. Mr. Pancake seemed like it would be the most delicious pancakes I've ever had, but they were basically inedible.
I don't want to be all doom and gloom about the food because some of what I had was genuinely delicious. Żabka hotdogs, zapiekanka, and a few non-Polish foods were all incredible.
And I guess what I want to accomplish from this post is to determine a few things. For other American tourists that have gone to Warsaw, is this common? For those that live in Poland, did I just have a streak of bad luck in restaurant selection and tend to hit bad ones? Also for Poles, is the food in Warsaw just not the best in Poland? If so, what cities have better food?
