housing & meal plans Monthly Megathread: Advertising things we don't usually allow - apartments/housing for rent, school surveys, items for sale, etc.

Upvotes

Created this monthly megathread to create a space for things we usually don't allow (advertising things) like sales, apartments for rent, or people interested in helping you with your project survey. Otherwise they can be lost in the feed, particularly when we near the end of a semester.

events & news Football Tickets - Non-Muss Student Pool

Upvotes

Hey,

I did my undergrad at the U and am venturing into a Master's. I started to watch and track the UU football team the last couple of years but have never gone to a game.

I tried for the MUSS pass lottery this last April/May, but to no avail (did not get the MUSS pass/did not win the lottery).

They played it smart and are requiring MUSS pass holders to register for upcoming games, and any extra seats will go to the rest of the student pool.

Where do we get those tickets ( from MUSS pass holders who aren't going)? Where can we apply for a chance to still go to a game?

admissions & financial aid Criminology Advising?

Upvotes

Hi all!! I’m currently a college freshmen at the U! I’m not sure where to go to get my schedule figured out next semester (this might be a stupid question) but do I just schedule an appointment with an advisor? And they’ll just help me figure out my schedule? Also I wanted to declare a double major so I wasn’t sure where/how to do that either. Any help would be appreciated!!

events & news Anyone else lose power?

Upvotes

We just lost power at Lassonde, and I wanna know if anyone else lost power in other places like Kahlert or something.

Edit: Power just came back on for us. Trailhead and Sunnyside also lost power, but I don't know if they also just got back their power or not yet.

classes & grades Increase in AI-based curriculum

Upvotes

Something feels different this semester. Has anyone else noticed a massive spike in their professors encouraging AI use? I'm a computer science student, and before it was considered heresy to use AI, but now every single class I'm in either permits it or outright promotes it. I have a coworker who's a business major, and she says it's the same deal for her.

On one hand, the world is undeniably changing, so it seems inevitable that education would be forced to incorporate this new technology at some point. The vibe I get from some of my professors is like "Well, you're probably all using it anyway, so we might as well teach you how to do so responsibly." I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Regardless of what field you're going into, it's likely that most of our professional lives after college will involve AI to some extent as well, so learning how to use it here does make sense.

On the other hand, it all feels sort of cynical to me. I worry that we're caught in the midst of a serious curricular atrophy — that having this magic answer box available at all times will deteriorate new university students' concepts of what it means to study and learn. It sucked at the time, but in retrospect I'm actually glad that I had to muscle through my difficult engineering classes with nothing but TA hours and grit, because it gave me a much deeper understanding of the material than if I had just used AI to explain everything. Even using AI as a tutor, I think having to sit and feel frustrated by a question is part of what makes the answer stick when you finally figure it out.

Also the way professors are doing a total 180 and now actively telling students to use ChatGPT makes me question the extent to which a private tech company is shaping our curriculum...

Have you noticed similar changes in your classes? If so, how do you feel about them?

extracurriculars & social life Looking for a Language Exchange Partner! [English↔Chinese]

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a PhD student in Learning Sciences at the U, and I’m looking for someone who might be interested in a language exchange!

I’m a native Chinese speaker and would be happy to help you practice Mandarin. I’m mainly hoping to practice my English, but I’d also be interested in learning other languages, so feel free to reach out even if English isn’t your first language!

A little about me: I did my undergraduate degree in Mathematics, and I'm good at it. So if you happen to need some help with math, I’d be happy to help with that too.

I’m hoping to find someone to meet up with regularly, practice languages, chat, and hopefully make a new friend along the way.

If you’re interested, feel free to comment or DM me!

Is anybody else hearing rumors that there’s going to be a layoff and some kind of formal announcement about it tomorrow? I have a friend whose manager told her she might be at risk but that he didn’t know for sure.

admissions & financial aid Should have lost scholarship from inadequate GPA, but it paid anyway

Upvotes

Anybody seen this before? Had a merit scholarship and didn’t maintain proper GPA, but it still automatically paid when I went to pay my tuition.

Does that mean it’s still active? Will they take it back at some point?

commuting & transportation Campus Shuttle Stop Requests

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

This may be a stupid question, but how are people requesting stops on the campus shuttles?

I know how to use the app to see which shuttle I’m on and where it’s going, but most of the time they pass by the stops I need and only go to the main ones (union, presidents circle, etc.)

There is a sign at the front of every shuttle that dings and lights up anytime someone needs to get off, but I can’t figure out how to use it.

Thanks! :)

classes & grades 2nd-year transfer student struggling with CS2420

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m a second-year transfer student at the University of Utah, and I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed about CS 2420.

My previous programming experience is mainly Python, and I’m now trying to learn Java. I understand basic programming concepts, but I’m finding the transition to Java harder than I expected.

I’m especially struggling with the basics and knowing what I actually need to learn before getting into the CS 2420 material. I've already asked my professor for help but he just said use chatgpt and google.

I’m also pretty stressed because I’m a transfer student and feel like I’m behind everyone else. I have some programming experience, but Java is making me feel like I’m starting over.

If you have any tips what should I focus on?

extracurriculars & social life Where are all the grad students at?

Upvotes

I'm trying to make new friends as a grad student, especially Latino friends or other POC at the U. I'm non-LDS as well, so it's hard to relate to a lot of people here. Where do all the grad students hang out?

majors, minors, graduate programs Multiplinary Design at a U of U - UX design

Upvotes

I'm a first year and I'm majoring in business but I have always been interested everything art and design/UX design. I was thinking double majoring in design (or getting it as a minor) and business but I heard that In the school of architecture there are not many resources and is more theorical. If anyone has done multiplinary design with the goal of UX design what was your expirence like?

I'm also looking into other schools that have UX as sort of like a major. But since I'm here at the U now I would like to see if it is possible to get any sort of UX design expirence here.

extracurriculars & social life Going to the gym

Upvotes

Hi folks! I want to preface this with the fact I am a big ball of anxiety, and while I’m trying new things, I’ve been doing way too many new things so I’d like to ask for a little help.

My biggest question is, how does going to the gym at the student life center work? It’s free for students right? I specifically mostly want to start with treadmills, so I can get some exercise because I desperately need to lol. But it’s something I’ve never done before so if someone could kinda paint a picture or walk through the steps of getting there I’d really appreciate it. My anxiety has been a little too out of control for me to truly feel comfortable going with no idea what to expect right now

housing & meal plans Mowing lawns

Upvotes

Hey does anyone know when the U mows? Specifically near the Union, Student Way Gym, Social Work building, and near Peterson Heritage Center? I'm super allergic to grass and my throat started closing up twice because of mowing that I wasn't prepared for. I know they can't stop mowing for me but I can take meds before going out and bring a spare epi-pen on days they are mowing if I know.

classes & grades does math 1010/1030 still have pre-requisites?

Upvotes

hello all,

i need a QL credit for my gen ed requirements still. i never took the ACT or SAT tests, so i don’t have those under my belt for the pre-requisites listed in the catalogue. i’m a humanities major, so i don’t plan on taking any math courses after this one.

i saw one person say that pre-requisites for these early math classes aren’t necessary anymore, but they still appear on the catalogue on the website. do i need to take an ALEKS test still or can i just sign up for it in the summer?

thank you in advance!

classes & grades Is it ok to go to another lab section instead

Upvotes

I'm a freshman at the U and one of my classes has lab sections on both Monday and Wednesday, but unfortunately, the Monday labs are mostly full, so I could only choose a Wednesday section. If possible though I’d like to keep Wednesdays open for work. Would it be okay if I went to an earlier lab section instead of my assigned one?

extracurriculars & social life Anyone know if there’s a way to run Minecraft on U computers?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a student at the U and I’ve been wanting to try Minecraft for a small education-related project. I recently came across a creator who uses Minecraft to build some really interesting learning activities, and I’d love to experiment with it myself.
I tried installing Minecraft on one of the library computers, but it looks like I don’t have permission to install it.
Does anyone know if there are any campus computers that already have Minecraft installed, or any computer labs where students are allowed to install software? Or is there another way to run Minecraft on a university computer?
Thanks!
