New Rules

Upvotes

I have implemented two new rules:

Rule 4: No Piracy. No illicit sharing of copywritten material, nor links to the same.

This was always a rule but wasn't formally posted until now.

Rule 5: No Low-Effort Content. Content shared in this subreddit should be thoughtful, additive, and effortful. This includes restrictions on memes and AI-generated images, text, music, or videos.

This rule came about after a large discussion on GenAI content. You can find the whole discussion with specifically my explanation for why I chose this rule in the bottom half of this post.

Thank you all for your contributions to this subreddit.

Rules for Promotion/Advertising Posts

Upvotes
  1. Users are permitted to post one promotional post per week. This is not per product, but per user. If you have multiple products, consider promoting them all in a single post.
  2. Affiliate links are not permitted. You may link directly to products or pages, but not using affiliate IDs.
  3. All promotional/advertising posts must be flaired with the "Promotional Post" tag.
  4. All promotions must be for Traveller-compatible products, services, or events, or those generic enough to be easily integrated into a Traveller RPG. Compatibility with any version of Traveller RPG is allowed.
  5. These rules apply whether a product is for sale or free.
  6. Reddit's general rules must also be followed.

Rationale: We believe that new content is the best way to keep an RPG alive, especially one that has been around as long as Traveller. One of the missions of this subreddit is to permit content creators to promote their work. We also believe that there is such a thing as too much promotion and we want to ensure that ads do not overwhelm other discussions. These rules are designed to balance these beliefs. These rules are subject to change if they don't keep that balance.

If you believe a user has violated any of these rules, you may report the post or comment (though this is not a big enough issue to require any 'ad police'). All interpretations of these rules are up to the moderators. If you don't like a product or the user promoting it, your solution is to downvote and/or block them.

The Spinward Marches is complete - Final Planet and System cards

Thumbnail

Upvotes

This is the fourth and final group of seven planet and system cards for the Glisten Subsector.

Also I am adding all new and updated planets and systems to my Dropbox as they are finished.

Link to Dropbox post Drop Box for all my Planet Information and System Maps

As people always ask I created these using a software program called Universe Sandbox.

As always feedback and corrections are welcome.

THIS represents a milestone for me personally.

1 Sector

16 Subsectors

439 Systems

Innumerable solar systems and planets

2,508 hours in Universe Sandbox (to be fair some of this was letting the simulation run to get the results I wanted. I am not completely insane).

This project started back in October 2024 when I decided to use a program called Universe Sandbox I had bought off a STEAM sale to make homeworld planets for the Travellers in my new campaigns.

Nearly two years later I have detailed a few systems in Foreven, a small strip of Gvurrdon, half of the Trojan Reach, and today the whole of the Spinward Marches.

Why?

For my own education and entertainment, and because I know from decades of DMing, GMing and Refereeing TTRPGs just how much work goes into running a successful game of Traveller.

I'm just happy to help.

Going forward I am reworking my Drop Box post to make things clearer for people trying to use it.

I also plan to complete Gazulin Subsector in the Trojan Reach. That will provide nine complete subsectors along with a few other systems that are part of Pirates of Drinax.

Edited to add: I should also thank the community. It has been your feedback, criticism and support that helped to turn a half-baked idea into something useful. Cheers!

After that.......

Mongoose 2E Calculating animals' flee / attack reactions as a group

Upvotes

TL;DR Here is how to figure out how many animals Flee and how many Attack, given a bigger group. If both Flee and Attack are given, then Stay = Total Animals - Flee - Attack. Some animals have the same probability for Flee / Attack, so roll twice.

Probability works better for larger groups, but I included smaller groups for a more complete picture. Obviously, for a group of 1 or 2 animals, just roll individually. But if you come across a herd of 21 space cows or a congregation of 13 space gators, this table might be handy.

To nerd out with me and see the actual math behind it, scroll to the bottom.

The Math

Ok, here's the actual math behind this. If you're good at probability, please double check me.

Animal Flee (F−) Attack (A+) P(flee) P(attack) P(stay)
Filter 5 10 10/36 = 0.2778 6/36 = 0.1667 0.5556
Intermittent 4 10 6/36 = 0.1667 6/36 = 0.1667 0.6667
Grazer 6 8 15/36 = 0.4167 15/36 = 0.4167 0.1667
Gatherer 7 9 21/36 = 0.5833 10/36 = 0.2778 0.1389
Eater 4 5 6/36 = 0.1667 30/36 = 0.8333 0.0000
Killer 3 6 3/36 = 0.0833 26/36 = 0.7222 0.1944
Hijacker 6 7 15/36 = 0.4167 21/36 = 0.5833 0.0000
Intimidator 7 8 21/36 = 0.5833 15/36 = 0.4167 0.0000
Carrion-eater 7 11 21/36 = 0.5833 3/36 = 0.0833 0.3333
Reducer 7 10 21/36 = 0.5833 6/36 = 0.1667 0.2500

2.9167 is the variance of a single d6, 3.5 is the mean.

To calculate for N size group:

  1. take P(flee) or P(attack) as p
  2. k = round(N * p * (1-p) / 2.9167) (min 1)
  3. DM = round(N * p - 3.5 * k)
  4. roll k d6 + DM
  5. Stay = N - Flee - Attack

Promotional Post Patron / Salvage Cards Preview

Thumbnail
backerkit.com
Upvotes

Hey ya'll --

The patron / salvage cards are now in preview mode over at Backerkit. If you sign up, you get a free adventure. Both cards and scenario are in Cepheus Engine / Traveller / 2d6 spacey gamey stuff.

I posted a couple of mockups previously : https://www.reddit.com/r/traveller/comments/1vmsurd/36_patrons_36_wrecks_off_to_prototype/

I'm funding it this way to cover the cost of awesome art by Craig Brasco, J.E. Shields and others, as well as editing, etc. And frankly, I have some ideas for other mini-adventure cards, so I want to see if there's interest.

I'd love to know what you guys think. Looking to launch the campaign on the 25th! Hope to see you there.

Go to background careers during character creation

Upvotes

This came up as a post game session conversation amongst my players.

What is your goto career field for character creation?

This came up because a few of my players who were long term Traveller players commented on how they will always try and roll up say a free trader in the Merchant class or a Star Marine. Simply because that is what they always played. Then the question was could we see or do something else just for grins and giggles.

I know for me my top three are:

  1. AGENT - LAW ENFORCEMENT. This seems to give me a good rounded combat capable character who is also good at persuasive comments or being able to spot things better than others.

  2. MERCHANT - MERCHANT MARINE. This seems if I wanted to be the wheeler and dealer for the group. Also at times making those trade rolls off the side can be interesting too.

  3. SCHOLAR - PHYSICIAN. When I have a need to say "It life but not as we know it Jim." Or "He's dead Jim" with my dice rolls.

Is there anyone else that has a goto for career while making a character? Have you tried to do something different just to see if it would be fun and interesting to see what the dice delivers?

A World That Was Not There

Post image
Upvotes

This is an adventure for Cepheus Engine.

The trade lanes between Anapcequdo and Crerudat are busy. This is one of the most busy trade routes within the Sonora Sector. Despite these worlds belonging to different political entities trade between the two worlds is brisk. Merchant ships ply these lanes constantly. The lanes are well patrolled. The risks of piracy are virtually non existent. There are no known anomalies, rogue planetoids or other issues that have ever been encountered here.

Until now.

Recently there have been reports that a tiny vacuum world has suddenly appeared within these trade lanes. Right in the middle of them. Right where they may well become a navigational hazard. Jump attempts in this trade lane now may have to factor in a new gravitational force in their calculations.

Ames Henderson of the Frontier Scout Service has requested the services of the travelers specifically. He wants someone to explore this world and find out exactly what is going on with it. Why has it suddenly appeared. Does anyone live there? Is this a permanent fixture in the sector now or might it disappear again? He has asked specifically for the travelers. It seems that he has been impressed with their recent body of work. Or perhaps he just sees them as disposable. In any event.....he is offering CR 300,000 for the travelers to visit this world and explore it for answers.

Mongoose 2E Introducing Students to Traveller II

Upvotes

As a followup to my last post, my students (mostly 10th and 11th graders) have begun to embark on their first adventure.

The kind of characters they ended up with is an absolute absurd riot. One of them managed to keep rolling fantastic dice aging rolls and somehow spent forty years in the navy as an admiral, while another spent 24 years as a scientist and got lucky enough on benefit rolls to come out with a fully paid off lab ship. In general, half the table pushed their aging really far...we'll see how that works for them.

Their first planet features an entire page of laws, with the bottom half being lorem ipsum gibberish in size 4 font. They have begun to bring out magnifying glasses and a latin translator to determine what it actually says.

A student borrowed some latin vocab cards from their parents to translate the laws of their first planet, of which the entire bottom half is in latin and in size 4 font - they have yet to realize what it actually is.

Right now my plan is to get them embroiled in some legal trouble with the local navy, and put them in some sort of debt to...someone. It'll either be random crime lord or random rich bureaucrat. The massive map on travellermap.com has been a great resource and it definitely adds to the vibe when I plop down the subsector printout (which I can justify to my administrators as a club expense...heh).

Cephus Engine The subsector generator you all specced is out. Here is what made it in.

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Nine days ago I posted a circular sector chart here and asked what the shortest path was to something usable at a table. The thread rewrote it. It is released now, so here is what happened to each piece of feedback.

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/traveller/comments/1w0lxww/i_built_a_procedural_sector_chart_generator_it_is/

u/Sakul_Aubaris said routes, X-Boat lines and borders are the part people want to draw themselves, and that the cascade automates cleanly with DMs for density and tech. Both true. Generation has cluster count and density as separate sliders with Rift / Frontier / Settled slants, and every route is editable and deletable after the fact.

u/ghandimauler gave me the zones, the layers and the fringe. Zones do something now: trade and X-boat treat Red as a no-go and route around it, and if the only link between two halves goes Red the express network splits in two rather than pretending it can cross. Amber is a penalty worth about two parsecs, not a wall. Mains and naval paths ignore zones entirely. Fringe worlds with no neighbour a jump away come back as X000000-0 and draw as a bare asterisk. Routes are six switchable layers: Mains at J1, J2 and J3, trade links between chains, an X-boat style express on J4, naval paths between bases on J6.

u/illyrium_dawn asked for star placement first and stats second, per-star rerolls, and a logicalizer. The rerolls needed the generator rebuilt: it shared one random stream across the grid, so a world's stats depended on how many worlds came before it and rerolling one silently rerolled everything after. Every hex now rolls from its own stream keyed on its coordinates. The logicalizer is on by default, and it raises tech rather than thinning population, on the grounds that a crowded hostile world is a story and an empty one is nothing.

u/AdOdd521 asked me to keep the dial chart as a style option instead of binning it. It stayed.

u/mavikfelna pointed at travellermap.com, which was the answer to the question I actually asked. The export is T5 tab-delimited plus XML metadata, so it reads back there instead of me building a worse map viewer.

u/rnadams2 and u/AdOdd521 between them are why the dial chart survived: as long as parsec distance is noted, the shape of the map is the referee's business.

Two other tools came out of the same thread. Trade & Cargo works out what one run between two worlds pays: freight, passages, speculative cargo, four ship profiles. And the Oracle has a voyage mode now, which carries a ship, a world and a date, and turns Jump, Arrive, Find work, Dockside and Depart into journal entries. Patrons come with a catch, and port encounters read the world's law level, so a high-law port boards you before the ramp is down.

STILL PENDING: sector scale, and starting from a completely empty map to place every star yourself. Both are on the list.

The question this time: the logicalizer is on by default. Is that the right default, or do you want your subsectors raw and are you happy to explain the TL3 world with a population in the billions yourself?

Cepheus Engine SRD, so the licence is open, and the word Traveller appears nowhere in the app or the listing.

Orbital 2100 on DTRPG DOTD.

Orbital 2100 is on the Deal of the day on DTRPG today. It's set in a future solar system where earth has colonized most of the solar system but is still using fusion drive ships, as opposed to Traveller style gravity drives. It's Cepheus based, so it's Traveller compatible.

Player Character Robot Question

Upvotes

I have a player who wants to make a robot character using the Robot Handbook. I am giving it a read and surprised to discover absolutely no guidelines for how much money to allow a character to use to make their robot, other than “put some kind of limit on it.”

Anyone have any advice, or know of any additional resources on this (fan or otherwise)?

Promotional Post Traveller Fleet Combat: Reimagined is out, and the first 10 people can grab it for 25% off

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Last week I posted here about a fleet combat ruleset I’d been working on for Traveller, built around the idea that big fleet battles should still be about the player characters.

Well, it’s out now!

Traveller Fleet Combat: Reimagined is a 35-page TAS supplement for running the kind of battles where dozens of ships and fighter squadrons are smashing into each other without turning the event into multiple sessions of ship-by-ship bookkeeping.

Ships are organized into wings, players allocate dice between Attack, Defense, and Maneuver, and the Travellers generate Command Points through their skills and decisions. The fleet battle stays abstract enough to move quickly, while the PCs are still the people making the decisions that matter.

The premium version includes:

  • High Guard ship conversions
  • Wing Sheets and play aids
  • Tables for generating scenes and complications during the battle
  • Expanded Command Point options
  • Advice for running fleet engagements
  • The Battle of Black Hole Station, a ready-to-run fleet battle scenario with named commanders, objectives, boarding actions, and battlefield churn
  • A complete Foundry VTT module for the official Traveller system
  • A magazine-style layout full of classic science-fiction artwork

It’s $10, but I know not everyone wants to spend money on a rules experiment before seeing whether it works at their table, there’s also a free version.

The free edition still includes the complete fleet combat rules, the magazine and printer-friendly versions, the Battle of Black Hole Station, and the play aids. You’re mainly missing the expanded appendices and the Foundry module.

If you grab either one and actually get it to the table, I’d really, truly, genuinely love to hear how the battle went; good, bad, indifferent, and ugly!

And, in keeping with my longstanding commitment to unbiased self-evaluation, reviews confirming my brilliance are also appreciated! Reviews that do not confirm my brilliance are, perhaps, less appreciated.

Happy gaming everyone!

Building a Ship During Character Creation

Upvotes

I know this is probably a dumb question, but during character creation if my traveller's get ship shares or partial ownership of a vessel can they take that and apply it to building a ship using "High Guard".

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but wanted to be sure. I know they get a ship during Pirates of Drinax, but my PC's want to build something ahead of time.

Also, what would the process be ? Just finish CC and then do the ship building?

Mongoose 2E Active sensors/transponders/ detection

Upvotes

Hey!

Im having a hard time wrapping my head around detection in space.

So its pretty clear to me that picking up someone on sensors is basically automatic. Realizing what the ping on your display is what actually requires the sensor check.

What i dont get. Why would anyone run active sensors. Yes, they have a much longer range but also give +2 to detection against you. Just run passive sensors and then use thermal and/or em to detect ships at long range. I dont see any benefit for active radar besides the fact that it would mean sense that only radar can “ping” the transponder and thus give you additional detail on the target ship (name, type etc.). However, when youre out in space travelling between workds you are mainly concerned about pirates. Pirates dont have transponders or if yes they emit fake info. So realisticly i dont want active sensors. I only want em/thermal to see if someones there so i can react in time to burn off.

Please, if you know hot to make this make sense let me knwo. Im lost

Why double turrets

Upvotes

I try hard to get my traveller universe to "make sense". One thing that appears quite a bit in almost all versions of traveller are ships with double turrets. In fact the majority of ships that aren't specific combat ships have double turrets. Having done a bunch of ship design, I struggle to come up with a good reason on why you'd use them! The cost savings are minimal even fully loaded out. The powers savings also minimal (a single weapon rarely breaks the bank). The TL difference also doesn't make sense (I think its TL 8 vs TL 9 but almost all ships are built at least at TL9).

The best I'm coming up with is some house rule about insurance or looking like a merchant: double turrets = merchant; triple = warship/raider so you have higher insurance or more likely for a customs inspection. This is kind of weak as at this point there's no insurance cost my travellers have to pay anyway :)

It may just be one of those things that was done back in 1977 and never made sense but I'd love to have a good reason besides "just because".

Mongoose 2E 12 Pre-gens with equipment to be used for One Shots

Upvotes

Greetings Travellers.

I put together a little One Shot Starter Pack for players and referees. It's a list of pre-generated characters with some starting gear. One for each career (sans prison and psionics). Each has some standard armor, a sidearm as well and some unique items per career (carried and in their locker).

Each character has one skill at 3, three skills at 2, seven skills at 1, and a few at 0. They may be a little OP, but remember, these are throw-away character for a single session only. Each card has some helpful DMs, such as initiative, DM to use their sidearm and the total carry capacity.

I also included names and suggestions for personality, but those can obviously be changed by the player.

Curious what you guys think about this.

EDIT: Fixed Belter's skill (vacc 3 was useless, I gave him Mechanic and a higher JoAT)

Mongoose 2E AI Trade DM Calculator

I was being pressed to learn how to integrate AI into my work at my last job, so I did this as an exercise. You can modify it, add more data to it, or whatever you want. I didn't create the content or the code so I don't own any of it.

The data is from from Travellermap and the trade modifier data is from the MgT2e Core 2022 Update. I dumped it into an AI to spit out a front-end UI with a hexmap (because I'd normally do this in Excel). It took about an hour.

It's a tool for displaying Trade Buy/Sell DMs. You select a Planet and a Trade Good, and it calculates the Purchase DM for that good on the current world, and the Sale DM for that good on nearby worlds.

It's an HTML file so just save it and open in a browser.
