I was thinking about this meme of legolas today. (For those unfamiliar, it's about how large legolas' eyes would have to be to see the distances he does in a non-magical setting).

I was thinking, how large would the human eye need to be to see bacteria with the naked eye? (Assuming no changes to the mechanics of the cells like rods and cones inside the eye. purely from having a larger lens.)

[Request] If a baseball is traveling 112 mph off the bat, and it travels over the right field wall into the crowd (approximately 345 yards), how fast is it moving when this guy catches it barehanded, and how much force is being absorbed?

EDIT: 345 FEET — football on the brain!

Trajectory is tough to determine but I’d estimate the ball lands 16 feet higher than it was struck. The right field wall is 8 feet tall, and the guy looks to be another 8 feet higher than that.

Bonus points for the force required to accelerate me in the two metre-ish space between the seat and the blades, and also the effect that acceleration would have on the human body.

[self] Confusion on homemade collars lengths before and after tying.

Upvotes

My partner is making homemade animal collars that are adjustable. We noticed that the longer the initial string, the larger the variation in collar length. Two specific examples:

We started with a 21 inch piece of paracord, and it ended up being:
9.5 - 7.5 in variable length

We had another one that was 26 inches and it ended up being:
12 - 8.5 in variable length

I am not great at math but know enough to know that it could be some sort of (non)linear(?) curve or something that relates the initial cord length to a set of high and low ends for final length.

I also know there is probably a small amount of variation based on the knots and amount of beads on them, but that should be small enough to be negligable I believe?

I was just hoping someone could figure out the math to know what the variable lemgth will be based on starting cord lengths?

Thank you in advance!

[Request] Thinking about the saying "that went over like a lead balloon" got me thinking. If you used the thinnest commercially available lead foil (0.4mm / 1/64"), could you make a balloon large enough that it would float when filled with He or H2, and, if so, how big would it need to be?

Upvotes

Lead foil is apparently available even thinner, but I'm assuming it would be difficult to get large sheets at ultra-thin gauges.
