To be fair, I only know these things exist because I found out my nudes where being shared in a mega folder.

I work at a childcare centre. One year, a teacher was attaching pictures to send to parents at the end of the week. She accidentally attached a dick pic along with the childās pics and sent to the family. I don't even watch porn and my OCD gave me this irrational fear. I'd have to compulsively comb through my messages and emails and make sure I hadn't accidentally linked something awful or even said something pornographic. I later learned this is a relatively common anxiety for people with OCD, and for some reason learning that made me slowly step away from that particular ledge.
Of course, another absurd fear took it's place but what're you gonna do.Ā

Oh god. I did have some nudes, then once at lunch I showed my dad a picture of something, and I guess he didn't think about it but started scrolling through other pictures. So I gasped and grabbed my phone and said "there's probably stuff you don't want to see." He was clueless, my mom was next to me dying, trying to not laugh.Ā
When we left (parents are divorced but were friends) I left with my mom and she lost it. "OH, your face! You should have seen it! And your voice, did it feel like an out of body experience because it sounded like you were having one."
I was like "it's not more comfortable for me that YOU know why I panicked, can we please stop!?!?"Ā
She did not, in fact, stop.Ā
And that's why I no longer keep any nudes.Ā

I got that beat.
Years ago, I worked at a company doing all sorts of business-y things. I shared an office with another guy.
Like Marley being dead to begin with in A Christmas Carol, this will be important later.
It was late one Sunday night, and Iām at home alone. Iād been watching porn when my laptop died. A sad, abrupt end to the evening and weekend. I closed it, went to bed, and thought nothing more of it.
The next morning I got to work, pulled out my laptop, saw it was still dead, plugged it in, and went to the bathroom.
On my way back, I heard something.
Moaning?
Faint at first, echoing down the hallway. With every step toward my office, it got louder. And louder. And considerably more enthusiastic.
Then my blood went cold.
No.
No no no no no.
I turned the corner.
There, sitting innocently on my desk, my newly resurrected laptop had apparently decided to pick up exactly where weād left off the night before.
Full-volume hardcore porn.
I sprinted across the room and slammed the laptop shut.
The sound kept going.
Of course it did.
For what felt like several geological eras, I fumbled around trying to make it stop while my soul left my body.
Then I looked over at my coworker. He was sitting at his desk. Headphones on. Eyes glued to his screen.
Maybe he didnāt hear it.
Yeah, maybe the headphones blocked everything.
Maybeā¦
No. There was no fucking way.
I walked straight out of the building.
For a few minutes, I genuinely considered getting into my car and driving until I ran out of gas. Wherever the car stopped, that would be my new home. New town. New name. New life.
I was beyond embarrassed. I was shaking.
Eventually I accepted that I had to go back inside and face whatever remained of my life.
When I returned, my coworker was gone. For one glorious second, I was relieved. Spared an awkward moment.
Then I realizedā¦
He must be talking to HR.
I started packing up my stuff. Not even consciously. My body had apparently accepted that my career (and maybe life) was over before my brain had.
A few minutes later, my coworker came back.
He said hi, and handed me a cup of coffee.
I stared at him.
He stared at me.
No smirk. No raised eyebrow. No joke. No acknowledgment whatsoever.
And in that moment, I understood. This saint of a man had decided to give me the greatest gift one coworker can give another:
We were never going to speak of this.
I took the coffee. āThanks. I need it.ā
And that was it.
He never mentioned it. I never mentioned it. I worked there for another couple of years and eventually left for completely unrelated reasons.
To this day, I have never experienced a more concentrated mixture of panic, shame, and gratitude.

One time I had a super cracked iPhone and it occasionally did things on its own but nothing bad until one day.
The entire front end had a Facebook group chat. I was on cash at the grocery store I worked at with my phone in my pocket. A coworker came up to me and said āUhhhhhhh do you realize what youāre sending in the group chat?ā
When I took my phone out of my pocket it was unlocked and sending a bunch of videos and photos to my group chat, some of which were quite inappropriate.
Corworker immediately took over for me while I ran to the back and deleted the messages. Such a scary moment

Porn addiction actually ruins people the way any addictive substance does. I remember leaning over the side of an outer passage way on a navy vessel I was repairing and seeing a guy watching it on his phone a level down literally in open view. Dudes would be watching porn with the volume up in porta potties, watching it at their desks, escalating content until they couldnāt even have sex with a human woman anymore or climax without a woman crying and seven dicks slapping her in the face on screen. I frankly gave up on males because of how much it seems to impact every element of interacting with them. Iām no āno pornā gal, but some of these men truly have lost control of themselves because of this ācontentā.

Absolutely agree. I'm also not a no-porn kind of girl but I hate the industry and the way actors are treated. I used to at least think that OF was like the empowering organic home grown porn, but I've since learned that it's quite common for content creators to not have any control or autonomy there either.
That sounds horrendous being stuck around a bunch of men like that.

It was great for about eight years. Now everything, everything about working with that many men as the only woman is different, all in negative ways. And they ALL struggled with porn addiction, and many of them asked ME to be their registered āaccountability buddiesā on various applications.
Thereās nothing inherent about any of this. Itās all socialization, and Iām done with having it around me. Look at the reaction here, they donāt even realize how unhinged it is. My comment is genuinely not that fucking crazy.
The statistics alone wrt the parallel of trafficking and the porn industry should be enough to bring way more awareness to whatās happening, but even with the most selfish, male-centered lens, these guys suffer from daily porn use whether they are aware of it or not, regardless of anger being their only known emotion.
Some of the shit men would show me will never leave my mind, and the younger ones would talk about levels of masturbatory play I didnāt even know existed. Itās constant escalation. I got the fuck out both professionally and socially.

While porn addiction can be a problem, people can become addicted to many things in life, anything really. And if I'd rank porn as destructive it would probably one of the lowest on the scale.

Granted your internal organs will survive but morally, normalising and consuming harmful content is destructive to society. You can't really discuss how bad an addiction is without considering how the content/drug is created but if you wanted to just make it about the individual then fair.
Mentally it is massively destructive. Having your brain rewired to a point that you can't interact with and enjoy your fellow human beings without reducing them to objects is obviously not good. Not being able to survive or enjoy normal human urges without watching videos of people practically being assaulted isn't good for you either. Doing stupid shit that gets you potentially sacked because you're addicted to videos doesn't seem great either.
