Discussion 9/11 jokes really aren’t funny.
(IMO)
A ton of people died.
On that day alone, 343 firefighters lost their lives trying to help those who were trapped. They didn’t know if they would make it out. They helped everyone they could.
Most everybody who was above the impact zone was trapped. There are photos of people jumping out the windows because its the much quicker and painless death rather than burning alive.
Thats not even mentioning the pentagon attack and flight 93, where they literally semi-took back control the plane to crash it into the ground, therefore saving countless other lives. They knew they were probably going to die. It’s horrible but it’s probably one of the bravest things you can do in my opinion. Not a single person on flight 93 survived.
Everybody who died had people who cared about them. It’s semi just disrespectful imo at the end of the day to joke about it (specifically the jokes that take it too far)
edit: i’m not trying to say that humor isn’t subjective or people can think different things are funny. i’m not trying to say its strictly a US thing and that i don’t care about other tragedies elsewhere. i do kinda understand most of the jokes its poking fun at people like osama bin laden. i’m just saying personally i feel as if some people make some jokes that just kind of go to far

The Patriot Act is our bestfriend! What’s wrong with the NSA, or flock cameras? Are you saying you disapprove of when we did the war on terror and kidnapped random people of color to torture them at CIA blacksites even though we knew they didn’t have information and knew torture was ineffective bc eventually you just admit to anything asked so they stop abusing you? Don’t you want here what Americans perceive “Chinese Style Surveillance” to be? The social credit system folks like to fearmonger about is real, and it’s been in America long before we were born, I fear.

I remember right after the Chernobyl disaster Saturday night live had a skit about it where a comedian has the audience rolling in laughter as he's shouting "Better you than than us ruskies!"
Gotta wonder if Americans are aware of their incredible level of hipocricy around demanding everyone feel sad for something that happened to them when they've NEVER displayed that attitude towards anyone else.
I got a question for the average American.
Do you know why Osama Bin Laden planned the attack?
The US paid for Osama to start Al'Qaeda in Afghanistan, they paid for the equipment, the training camps, and they sent CIA operatives to train them. At the time this was to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan.
So why did Osama suddenly decide that the US was the great satan and declare a Jihad against them?
Do people even know? Its a very specific event.
•
u/AdamianBishop 3h ago
and no one ever wonder when they execute OBL, no picture of him being detained or whatever, other than that 1 very blurry pic of 'a body' being thrown out to sea onboard an aircraft carrier. While in the case of saddam, and the Venezuelan president, lots of picture of the capture and being paraded in handcuff

American sanctions, military presence, and politics in the Middle East leading to thousands of deaths in some places and hundreds of thousands in others. Relevant to today’s politics, he was notably angry at the United States for supporting Israel.
OP, 9/11 jokes are funny as shit. A meager 3000 people dying? If you were upset about this and you weren’t even alive maybe start paying more attention to the very long history of the US doing this on a significantly larger scale all over the world.
“Remember the Alamo” was misrepresented and misused to wrongly justify slaughtering Native Americans and “never forgot” is just the modern day version. We have killed easily more than fifty times that amount of civilians in Iraq alone
•
u/Darkstar_111 2h ago
American sanctions, military presence, and politics in the Middle East leading to thousands of deaths in some places and hundreds of thousands in others
Sort of, it was specifically the joint attack on Beirut in Lebanon in the 80ies. Beirut had high rises that were bombed killing thousand of people. That's what "inspired" Osama to also tear down the tall buildings in the US, and he picked the world trade center. Attacked it in 92, and again in 2001.

u/TemperatureNo7272 16 13h ago
I get what you mean, but a lot of people use dark humor as a coping mechanism, not because they’re trying to disrespect the victims. That doesn’t make every joke okay, and if it crosses a line then it should be called out, but not everyone making those jokes means harm by it.
At the end of the day, 9/11 was a real tragedy and it’s fair to want people to be more respectful about it.

You mean when America trained terrorists and they did what terrorists do? And then America used that incident to preform mass surveillance on its citizens and fundamentally change the way America works on a national security level to take the rights away from its people as well?
Nobody normal thinks it's funny that people died. They think the whole incident was either an inside job created to push mass surveillance and/or fund a war for oil, or hysterically stupid on our governments part to allow something like this to go under radar and happen to its people.
The war lasted for 20 years. And we didn't "win", because we weren't there to "win". If we were truly there to win, we would have ended the war in a few years, tops.
→ More replies (8)•
u/ItsGustave 9h ago
I agree that nobody thinks those people dying is funny, but nobody I have ever talked to about 9/11 has so much as hinted that they believed it at all plausible for it to have been an inside job. Nor that it happening was “hysterically stupid” on the part of the government.
Also the whole part about “winning the war” is a gross simplification of the entire conflict.

Context matters and also people are usually not making fun of the victims in these kind of jokes, always the perpetrators and the people who caused them. Same thing happens with Epstein jokes or to be fair even holocaust jokes (at least the people making the jokes believe it happened). The only one I can think of where the victim is the one being made fun of is Charlie Kirk and to be honest I feel no sympathy after the thing he spent his entire life working towards has been taking away my rights

Norm McDonald is proof tragedies can lead to some dark humor that’s not for everyone. A sensitive topic like that can easily lead to some shit and offensive jokes but done right it’s just a flex by a comedian mastering their art.
Also when the conspiracies have roots that dig deep it requires someone like a comedian who just telling “jokes” to slip some truths in and get people thinking again.
•
u/EtherealMaterial 6h ago
I agree with you. But it’s also my birthday so I reserve the privilege to make ‘never forget’ jokes when people ask when my birthday is.

More people died in COVID in the US than 9/11. But it had no lasting consequences. Three hundred people is a statistic in the end.
•
u/teddyslayerza 4h ago
American's lost the right to claim 9/11 as an exclusive tragedy when they used it as the pretext to kill 4.5 million people. If it's good enough to be used as a propaganda tool, it's good enough for lay people to use as a bit of humor.

I was a teenager, just barely. 12 or 13 I think. I woke up in the morning and my parents were both already up. All the TVs were on the news, so I couldn't watch my morning cartoons before school. I think it was digimon, pokemon and dragon ball z, but not that day, because the only thing on any channel was the news.
I'm Australian, and everyone was sullen. For me it happened overnight, while I was asleep and so far away, and all I can really remember was the emotions of everyone around me. 'This can't happen' was the feeling. And a sadness so heavy that you could barely walk through it.
I'll never find the 911 jokes funny, it hits different when you experienced it when I did, at the age I did. But I'm also done fighting them, it's not a hill I want to die on. I'm not gonna laugh though

I’ve been to the memorial before. Despite the bustling crowds and city streets, when I came up to the memorial the world went almost completely silent. I looked at the names and recognized none of them at all, but I knew that each and every one of those names was a person, with their own ideas, aspirations, and dreams. I never met them, but they were suddenly important to me.
I’ve spoken to people that were there or involved with the cleanup, response, or aftermath. My mother has a friend who was working in the second tower when she saw the first tower get hit, and she immediately decided to get out of the other building. After that, tower two got hit. Her quick thinking saved her life.
A college professor of mine is a retired FBI agent who was part of the agency in 2001. His story of it is long and difficult, but one major focal point was interviewing survivors, and he interviewed a man who explained that, across the gap between the two towers and their windows, he saw and made eye contact with several of the trapped people, before they jumped. He explained how he saw their fear, their anxiety, everything.
I’ve learned enough about it, year after year, to understand a single, non-negotiable, absolute reality.
It’s not funny.

9/11 jokes are kind of disgusting in my opinion, while i was not alive when it happened, my parents lost freinds in the towers, my dad lost 2 of his cousins, people who he'll never get to see and ill never get to meet that part of my family becuase they died on that day.
Yeah I get people say it dark humor "haha my grandpa was beat pilot and he died during 9/11", but dark humour does not excuse using a tragedy that killed 2000 living people , including children our age and hell even those who hadnt made it to elementary school yet, and injured so many more, as well as ripping family bonds apart, and using all that just to make a fucking joke. Making 9/11 jokes is the sign of somebody who is immature

plus people joke about tragedies all the time, whether it be JFK's assassination, the Holocaust (which by all regards was MUCH worse than 9/11), or the Chernobyl disaster of 1986

It's funny because of the context it exists in. If it was a tragedy that didn't lead to anything it wouldn't be funny, just like every other tragedy. It's the fact that the US used it as an excuse to start a war that it is the object of humour.

You're entitled to your opinion however I think you are precieving it the wrong way idk why this sub reddit keeps popping in on my feed however I am a former JTAC
We as humans in times of stress, mourning or even the aftermath will find ways to cope and most of the time that'll be through joking or humor
I'm not saying that this is one big coping strategy but it is how sensitive topics are handled by some people and that's fine
Yes a ton of people died so did tons of people to Stalin yet there's tons of jokes about him he'll a literal movie about his death
So did Hitler yet jokes for that too exist
Look I remember seeing a bradley get hit and for a second I thought it got ammo racked and my immediate reaction was to try to make humor to try to distract myself on the pure possibility that everyone in the IFV was dead
