How to keep wild animals from drowning in my pool

Post image
Upvotes

So I have had a string of animals drown in my pool. When I got the pool after buying the house, the previous owner had let it go to swamp. I ended up emptying it and replacing the liner but before I did I found over a dozen animals varying from baby bunnies, chipmunks, mice, etc. After I finally got the pool repaired and opened up, I thought the chlorine would discourage this. I haven’t been putting the cover on because I live in Kentucky and without the thermal cover the pool is above 85 degrees. But today I found a dead bunny. So how can I keep animals from falling in the pool and dying? There is a gap under my fence that lets them get in. I’m just trying not to murder all the wild animals.

I’d forgotten how much I hate this thing.

While my Beatbot is on the fritz awaiting a part, I had to haul out the old Polaris. Already it’s in knots. Hurry up FedEx, I need that part!

Beware of glitter-filled pool floats! 😆

No, I didn't have a pool party for strippers. My daughter's large pool float was torn open, releasing "glitter" throughout the pool. We didn't give that purchase enough thought.
Too bad I cleaned the filter a couple of days ago.

Fiberglass Pool Considerations

Upvotes

I am considering a fiberglass pool. I want a pool deep enough for diving, but also plenty of shallow space for smaller kids. Does anyone have a fiberglass diving pool? Thoughts? Suggestions? I also want a tanning ledge so if anyone has tanning ledge I would like your thoughts on this also. Thanks

Air in Pool Pump Basket

Upvotes

I recently installed this pump (Hayward Tristar VS800 series) and no matter what speed I'm running the pump at, there is a large air pocket in the basket.

Things to note:

- The pump i had before required 1.5 inch plumbing and this one uses 2 inch.
- i replumbed it all using the same design as the previous pump.
- I've checked and rechecked all o-rings.
- I've tried using a garden hose and flooring all joints with not difference.
- my pool isn't losing water.

Is this normal for this pump?

Any suggestions?

Are SMBW-2036 (Metal Tank) Really Any More Dangerous?

Upvotes

Just had a pool tech upgrade me from a WhisperFlow to the VST; normally a DIYer but the warranty scenarios just made sense. During the visit got a couple of hard sells to replace the copper lines (older pool) and that my Purex SMBW-2036 was a death trap waiting to happen. Did a bit of research and couldn't find anything that indicated it was any worse than any other clamped-half filter in that the danger is improper maintenance/assembly/operation

Don't know how old, but is in good condition (other than the manifold and element separator need replacing) and we've been happy with the filtration quality (and once we switched to PoolRx not having to clean the elements monthly). Decided that if the manifold gives way will likely replace the filter even though that economically doesn't make sense.

Right now my urgency is low and likely to swap out for a C&P 320 or 420 cartridge filter on a DIY basis (the $600 install premium seems high for no electrical and limited moving parts).

Looking to see if my thinking is right or if there indeed is imminent danger of the lid going into orbit.

WhisperFlow VST Programming - Spa and MX-8 Cleaner

Upvotes

Curious as to tips/tricks - Have Speed1 set for 10 hours of 1800 rpm filtration and Speed2/3 off. I'd like to have a custom setting for 2800 rpm for 4 hours for MX-8 and 3400 rpm for 30 minutes for spa usage. May have been spoiled by a previous Intelliflow unit's independent programming but I can't seem to assign Speeds 2 and 3 to do this as they are set to run in sequence after Speed 1. I know I can alter the parameters of the speed clean, but if I want a choice of the scenarios, looks like I"m screwed.

Anyone solved this dilemma in a way that avoided manual reprogramming the SpeedClean button? Or am I destined for an external controller (and if so recommendations)? Thx

Update: got pool all cleaned up and swim-worthy

Upvotes

I posted before a month or three ago, looking for advice on killing the algae and clearing up the opaque water in my pool.

it's finally done!

I wasn't doing anything wrong, I just needed to change which brand of chemicals I was using. I had been using Suncoast, which 20 years ago (the last time the water got so bad), Suncoast worked perfectly. Now they do nothing - except the alkalinity increaser, can't mess up sodium bicarbonate (I don't think).

I switched to Clorox products, and lo and behold, it killed the algae cleared up the water. Running the filter 24x7 for a week and backwashing daily helped with that. I did wind up using the clarifier a week after the floc, and that did help.

Water had cleared up enough that I could get the rest of that pile of leaves off the bottom and now the robot is keeping up with the new arrivals.

Lesson I learned here: when everything you've successfully done before isn't working this time, use a different brand of chemicals.

What’s the one small thing you always forget when closing the pool?

Upvotes

After a few years of doing my own closing, I've got the big stuff pretty much down. It's always some stupid little thing that gets me.

A missing plug, an O-ring I swear I put somewhere safe, a random cover piece I can't find when I need it. One year I made a Lowe's run halfway through because I was one threaded plug short. Last year I found out the hard way I'd left water sitting in my utility pump over the winter. Fired it up in the fall and it was seized solid.

So this year I'm laying everything out the night before: hoses and adapters in one bin, plugs and O-rings bagged up. Already ordered a replacement pump online, just so I'm not scrambling that weekend. Here's hoping I don't discover some brand new thing I'm missing.

What's the one that always gets you?

Boxer briefs under swim trunks?

Upvotes

I have a question. I have swimming class tomorrow at school and I'm wondering if I should or should wear underwear under my swim trunks. Almost all of my friends do it to hide their erections, or because it's more comfortable, or because the net in the swim trunks gives them chafing.
Thanks for any response
