What could be the reasons why free subscribers do not pay? (I will not promote)

So we get a high number of visitors, and more than 30% convert to free users. The problem is that very few of those free users actually upgrade to a paid plan. We've tried email outreach and surveys to understand what's stopping them, and customers even say they're willing to pay, but that isn't translating into them paying. What am I missing here?

What's the difference between the Free account and the Paid one?

I use free accounts often if I just need a basic service. I'm not interested in buying a premium service if the things that come with it are nothing that I want or need.

I mountain bike a lot, Strava, one of the biggest apps for the industry was enormous before it started forcing people to start paying and people still complained a lot and honestly it changed the entire ecosystem dynamic. For the cost of an after ride chocolate milk you could subscribe, but people were offended by it.

It’s just human nature, your value as a free app is not proportionately related to your value as a paid app.

I think you are asking the wrong question, ask those who are paying why they are paying.

Setup a time limit for the free account. Make the app not 100% accessible, pay for the full experience. Create a usage point system in your app, give them full experience with a certain amount of usage points. After they should buy those points to continue or a year license.

Free users are basically trying the product until they find a reason to upgrade. I’d focus less on why they aren’t paying and more on what they’d genuinely hate to lose, or what feature would make paying feel worth it without making the free version frustrating.

Can you just clarify what you mean by "subscribers do not pay"? Are they using a version of your product that's free forever?

Free pizza, even if it's not great pizza, is still pizza. You'll eat it - cause it was free.

Now next time someone asks you to pay $x per slice for that same pizza, you're probably going to say "Nah, I'm good". You were happy to house that pizza when it was free, but it was never something you were ever likely to ever pay to eat.
