First time actually seeing the word ‘rapist’ in the headline. Piece of shit.

On numerous occasions he would pull her hair, hit her with a clothes hanger, and cane her multiple times, even for slight infractions.
The victim believed it was normal for him to use violence against her, said the prosecutor.

"The man cannot be caned as he is above 50 years old."
No mercy to pedophiles especially one who is suppose to be the protector for their children, not their nightmare. Gag older should only be to protect children.

Even if you're 50 years old, it doesn't matter at what age u are, u will still receive punishment. No good deed goes unpunished. I am sick of having to hear all these f**ked up stories about minors or random ppl getting raped. These kinds of terrible monsters need to be removed from Society

Man I could not imagine being this guy’s lawyer. The visceral disgust I have for him just reading this
•
u/Sceptikskeptic 1d ago
Everyone gets a fair trial.
If you do not believe in this then don't live in a country with rule of law.
•
u/Icy-Cockroach4515 1d ago
I mean "he should get a fair trial" and "I would not want to be his lawyer" are two lines of thought that can exist at the same time.
•
u/Stormydaycoffee 1d ago
Eh well sure but unless you’re a public defense lawyer, otherwise one can still support fair trials while not wanting to be the lawyer for pieces of shit like this.
•
u/DistributionSalty721 1d ago
Lawyers will say it is to protect his rights so he get the correct punishment

"The prosecution sought a jail term of between 13 years and eight months and 14 years and nine months, with an extra 18 to 24 weeks’ jail in lieu of nine to 11 strokes of the cane."
"The man’s lawyer, Gregory Fong, asked for a jail term of 13 years and five months."
Defence asking for only 3 months lighter than the prosecution just shows there's nothing left to defend for this piece of shit.

Am I crazy or is ST getting more and more unprofessional as time goes on. "Knew the game is up" ?????
•
u/GelatoBravado 1d ago
Straits Times is becoming sensationalist. Statements of facts mixed with value judgment. They sometimes read like Reddit posts or casual opinions on TikTok. I observed this initially in the younger writers but the older ones are now doing the same.
‘He knew the game was up’ reads like an audiobook. Atrocious.
The more appropriate headline would be ‘Father found guilty of rape and other sexual offences’.

Thanks for putting my opinion in a more formal manner. Am absolutely disgusted that a poor girl was raped and that was the best they could come up with to describe her ordeal.

As someone who studied Journalism, I have never liked ST's writing style. I had even fact-checked them reporting an article several years ago where their writer got the country wrong. ST's editor revised that article the following day and simply removed all mention of the country instead of correcting their error.

I also don't like, I rmb a few years back when they spelled the name of someone I knew wrongly on the straits time article.
•
u/Ordinary-Ad1233 1d ago
Is there a difference between using the words "rape" and "sexual assault"?
"Rape" seems more sensationalist but I'm not sure what the conventions for journalism are like. I would expect to see it in garbage like The Sun and not a broadsheet.

Thought I was the only one noticing this. While the meaning is clear, it just feels weird in this context

Yes, putting rape too lightly. And I question the dramatic way it was written, when the point is that he only surrendered when he realised he would be caught

Soon we may get “Singaporean man SLAMMED by court for offences” as headlines

Daughter?? This is terrible , especially since it normalized the violence for her
•
u/yoohnified 1d ago
should really get rid of the “cannot cane 50y/o and above” law. if one has the strength to rape, he has the strength to get caned

Based on the things he has done (cheating, CBT, voyuerism, domestic violence) , this person is a real piece of work. Good riddance. May the hand of justice hit him hard.

Sounds like the mother isn't around? For her to seek the police alone. Hope the school/msfd educate vulnerable kids that these things are not ok and should report police asap.
•
u/take0a0pinch 1d ago
Maybe mother was working during the day when the incident happened?
The daughter was able to keep calm and went straight to the police station after the attack instead of washing up just to keep the evidence, she already display certain bravery and mind.

I saw "51 years old" and nearly punched my monitor.
•
u/chopemaster 1d ago
He may not get caning but he'll likely get more years in prison.
•
u/iwantaspudgun 1d ago
Only max 12 more months in lieu of caning, not the same trade-off IMO. Just chemically castrate this beast.

u/gaoxingdcf 1d ago
This one really damn disgusting. How can anyone rape their own flesh and blood? They can rot in jail for all I care.
•
u/iwantaspudgun 1d ago
Every time I read news like that my heart just breaks for the victim. It’s really, incredibly sad to be born to the worst type of people. Instead of having a fulfilling childhood being protected and doted on, you have a beast who rapes you? I cannot fathom how one even move on from this. 🥲

The girl is so brave and quick-thinking to report right after so the evidence is preserved. What a poor thing... i hope she is getting the help she needs

u/LoveLimerence 1d ago
Happened in 2024 and reported immediately. Can the law be updated to immediate caning for such cases where perpetrator is related by blood to the victim, and nearing 50?
Otherwise just raise the age to 60.
Or make sure to put him in a cell where he will be treated “well” by fellow inmates.
•
u/tryingmydarnest 17h ago
Vigilante justice has no place in prisons, much less met out by convicted lawbreakers.

•
u/chokemebigdaddy 1d ago
Don’t cane the person, that’s wrong. It was his dick that did the deed, so cane the dick.
Problem solved? I’ll even give him a 50% discount on the caning number.

51 years old.
Regrettably, he cannot get the rotan, right?
