I live in a town of 400 in the bible belt and work at a liquor store and some people are genuinely so ashamed or trying to hide it from their church that they pull behind the store and then come in so no one recognizes their car. This is very much so alive in the world and i believe you'd be quite culture shocked, people also publicly say the n word and casually call gay people the f slur and no one even bats an eye, usually if someone walks by they jump into the conversation just to agree.
