I think the fc generally underrates pre injury Deni because of how absurdly terrible he was as a first option after he was injured. It's pretty easy to look at the healthy blazers roster and think a top 15 player should've been able to bring them into a 6th seed spot, but deni brought this atrocious bench into 0.500 before Injury and I think everyone is overlooking it going into the next season

Portland snapped a three-game losing streak with a dominant road win over Cleveland. The Blazers controlled the game for most of the night, taking a 10-point lead into halftime and extending it to 18 in the third. Cleveland made a late push to cut the lead to five with 2:37 remaining, but Portland closed the game on a 9-2 run. Deni Avdija led the way with 27 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, while Shaedon Sharpe and Caleb Love both added 20 off the bench. The Blazers also shot 14-for-34 from three and held Cleveland to just 13-for-52 from deep.

TLDL: Scoot should demand a trade . An extension isn’t in anyone’s best interest . They say maybe his fair market value is around 18 million .

It’s sad as to me scoot has showed great potential and I want to see him stay on the team. The only part I think was missed in this discussion is they could trade jrue for a significantly smaller salary , opening up cap space and court time for scoot.

I think if they trade scoot he will become a solid starter on his next contract . He works too hard not to . He finally got some confidence last year and it showed in his game .

If Sochan is only on a non-guaranteed camp deal then why is his merch on the blazers rip city clothing site? Seems odd to sell jerseys for a player that isnt guaranteed to be on the team next year, which begs the question, do we already know we are keeping him and just haven’t announced it?

For me I’ve always loved Maurice Lucas backing up his teammates, being the enforcer on those 70s teams. But the one moment that deserves more love from the franchise was his fight against Dawkins in game 2 of the finals! Not only is he tough as hell for squaring up against a giant but that fight truly turned the tides for Portland to win the chip!

Random thought about how the Rose Garden (I refuse to use M**a Cent*r) crowd will react the first time Dundon is shown on the Jumbotron. 95% boos? Or maybe the org will intentionally not show him? There always seemed to be a warm welcome when Paul Allen was shown, but obviously things are different now. Are we talking Bob Whitsitt level disrespect? I’m assuming any Dundon signs will be confiscated as well.

Portland pulled off one of the wildest comebacks of the season, erasing a 22-point deficit to hand the defending champion Thunder their first loss of the season. Oklahoma City jumped out to a 41–21 lead after the first quarter, but Portland slowly chipped away before taking control in the fourth. The Blazers outscored OKC 40–33 in the final quarter, with Jrue Holiday knocking down two clutch free throws with six seconds left to put Portland ahead for good. Deni Avdija nearly recorded a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists, while Jerami Grant added 20 and Duop Reath went 4-for-5 from three.

Deni's contract is really interesting, and creates questions and implications for Blazers' future. Further, his deal and future negotiations are just one, albeit the main, contract that shows a team in transition, rather than a team built to win now. 2027-2028 is the expiration year for a huge chunk of the roster, and sets the stage for a soft reset with Bucks picks in hand.

Of course, that's normal in a lot of ways; teams figuring out how to sign good players for a winning future and adapting to downstream consequences is basic NBA stuff. However, Deni's incredibly low value contract puts a spin on it.

Deni's Contract and Implications

Deni has two years left, expiring at the end of 2027-28 season. He gets ~13m this season, and ~12m next year, a total of ~25m.

Deni's play last season was far and away above the value of his contract. He's probably closer to an AAV of $30 million or more (depending on opinion) based on his statistical comparisons to guys like Pascal Siakam, Jalen Johnson, MPJ, etc. If he continues his high level of play, he'll obviously want more money with his next deal, and 2028 is not far off.

Players seeking more money can negotiate an extension or go to Free Agency (FA), but the Blazers probably won't extend Deni despite his eligibility. Normally, it would be a no brainer to lock-up a player like Deni before FA, but:

The first-year salary in a veteran extension can be worth up to 140% of the salary in the final year of the player’s previous contract or 140% of the NBA’s estimated average salary, whichever is greater.

Deni's contract is so low (~12m rounded in his final year) that the 140% extension doesn't make a ton of sense for him. He'd only make ~17m in the first year of his extension, with 8% increases from there. His contract is so low, that it actually makes more sense to use the league average salary as the basis (~21m extension), but that still wouldn't be appropriate for Deni's level of play. So, while the Blazers can try and extend Deni, it would be a surprise if he took it.

Teams can renegotiate contracts in these types of situations; however teams need available cap space to do so. They can only pay the player more to the extent they have the cap space to do so.

Blazers are over the cap, and would have to carefully trade players, not take salary back, and get below the cap. Not only would Blazers need to drop $40-70m just to get to the cap, but then another 15-20m to make space for Deni's extra money. It doesn't seem realistic. The Blazers would need to drastically overhaul the roster and trade away assets to ditch salary.

Further, picking up Morant, and his money (~10m more than Grant + Murray) seems to indicate Blazers aren't focused on clearing cap. Dame and Jrue could theoretically turn down their options for 2027-28 (total of ~51m) but that doesn't seem likely either (especially Jrue).

So, the best guess is that Deni heads to Free Agency in the summer of 2028 where the Blazers can offer use Bird Rights to offer Deni a deal, hopefully beating any other offers he might get. With Bird Rights, Blazers can offer extra year (5 instead of 4), and 8% raises on first year value instead of 5%. That's potentially a lot, and hard for a player to turn down...but it also assumes that Blazers want to beat other offers for Deni...Will Blazers beat any/all offers? Will Deni want to be here enough to favor Blazers?

These questions are interesting enough that we have to recognize the chance, however small it is, that Deni may seriously consider other offers. Infamously, LaMarcus Aldridge bailed on Blazers in FA and it's not impossible that Deni might feel similarly enough, or that Blazers don't offer a deal significant enough to change his mind. If that's the case, Blazers may even try and get ahead of the issue by trading Deni. His low salary may make him an appealing way to grab picks or young players for a transition.

The rest of the team, and Blazers big 2027-28 decisions

The situation with Deni is key, maybe even a watershed type call, but the rest of the team's contracts all highlight just how quickly the Blazers (and their new owner) may pivot to a new direction.

Beyond Deni's contract, other key players need decisions. Dame, Jrue, and Morant all expire after 2027-28 season (and maybe earlier if Dame and Jrue don't take options). Scoot and Clingan will also want extensions in the immediate and near future. In fact, the only guys currently on the books for 2028-2029 are basically Sharpe, Toumani, RWIII, and Hansen (if we take his option). Clingan and Scoot will probably be there too, but less certain. Even Nori's spot depends on a team option.

So, this team is positioned to carefully assess Deni and the rest of the guys this year, and they'll use the next two years not to focus on winning, but building their collection of assets with 2028 in mind as a soft reset.
