MOD Community Update & Recent Changes

Upvotes

Hi everyone! The mod team has been hard at work on cleaning up and updating r/rescuedogs. The goal is to make the subreddit easier to use, easier to moderate consistently, and (most importantly) a better place for people working with rescued dogs.

We've made quite a few changes recently, so here's a quick overview.

šŸ“‹ Rules & Flair

We've rewritten and streamlined the subreddit rules to make them clearer and easier to follow. Please review them again before posting/commenting.

Some of the biggest changes include:

  • Be Civil now explicitly covers harassment and demeaning comments directed at both users and animals.
  • Stay On Topic now covers both off-topic posts and discussions that derail otherwise relevant threads.
  • Adoption/Foster/Rescue networking has been consolidated into a clearer format.
  • Donation and fundraising requirements have been updated, simplified, and clarified as well as added a disclaimer.
  • Pledge rules have been updated to make the process clearer.
  • No Spam has been updated to cover a broader range of abuse.
  • No Breed-Based Hate or Dog-Directed Harassment has been clarified.
  • Good-faith discussion about breeds and related topics is allowed, but inflammatory comments and attacks on breeds or individual dogs are not.
  • Safety & Bite History now focuses on dogs with a documented history of biting a person that drew blood, made more consistently enforcible, and added a disclaimer.
  • Outdated and redundant rules have been removed.

We've also cleaned up the post flairs and consolidated several categories to make choosing the appropriate flair easier, as well as adding an 'Outcome' flair for adoption posts that have had outcomes.

šŸ¤– Automod & Moderation

  • We've cleaned up the Automod configuration and removed a number of outdated or unnecessary rules and automated messages.
  • The welcome message has also been simplified. New users are now directed to review the rules and report rule-breaking content rather than engaging with it.
  • We've also standardized our saved responses for removals, bans, and common modmail questions so that moderation decisions can be communicated more consistently.

šŸ• Networking & Euthanasia Posts

  • We've updated the formatting requirements for adoption/foster/rescue pull, and euthanasia/deadline posts.
    • The goal is to make these posts easier for people to find and understand while keeping the process as simple as possible for the people doing the actual networking.
  • We've added an Outcome flair so that posts can be updated by OP when we know what happened to an animal.
  • Comments are now set to display oldest first, which should make it easier to follow updates on networking and urgent posts. Votes are also hidden for the first 60 minutes.

šŸ’° Donations & Pledges

  • We've clarified the requirements for donation requests and added a disclaimer that verification is not a guarantee or endorsement and that users are responsible for doing their own due diligence before donating.
  • A new form has been created to streamline donation plea requests.
  • We've also added saved modmail responses to help people who want to make donation requests understand the verification process.

šŸ”— Community Resources

  • We've updated the sidebar and added links to other communities and resources that may be useful for adoption, fostering, pet help, lost animals, and other situations that don't fit within r/rescuedogs.
  • We've also added the ability to sort posts by post flair, so users can tailor what they want to see.

šŸ’¬ Community Feedback

  • We're also reaching out to established members of the community, including people who have regularly used r/rescuedogs for rescue networking, to hear what has and hasn't been working.
  • We know that changes to a community are much more useful when they're informed by the people who actually use it, so if there's something you think we should know about, please feel free to send us a modmail.

This is an ongoing process. We don't expect to get everything perfect immediately, but we're committed to making r/rescuedogs a useful, welcoming place for people trying to help dogs in need.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around, contributed, reported problems, networked dogs, fostered, adopted, or otherwise helped make this community what it is.

~ The r/rescuedogs Mod Team

MOD POST FAQ: PLEDGES AND VISIBILITY.

Upvotes

Hello!

The modmail (and my own) inbox has been flooded with questions about pledges and boosting posts. This post will be pinned at the top of the community with the rest of our guidelines and updates. I will also be creating a spreadsheet of FAQ answers for new questions that arise. If I miss any questions in this post, please leave a comment or shoot a message.

Thanks!

  1. Q: What is a pledge? A: Pledges are promised amounts of money that will be donated if an animal is pulled by a rescue group. A pup with pledges is likely to attract a rescue's interest.

  2. Q: How much can I pledge? A: Whatever you feel comfortable donating.

  3. Q: How do I pledge for a dog I see on r/rescuedogs? A: Comment on the post with your amount. Networkers that are posting should be keeping a list of pledges for the pups they have posted.

  4. Q: How do I know when and where to send money? A: The networkers will post a public update if a pup was saved and pledges need to be honored. All information should be included in this update post. PLEASE DO NOT SEND MONEY TO ANYONE THAT REACHES OUT VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE TO COLLECT PLEDGES.

  5. Q: I'm a networker, how can I keep up with pledges? A: We recommend google sheets or excel. Creating a google form for pledges is also a great idea.

  6. Q: I'm feeling uncomfortable with someone reaching out about honoring my pledge, what do I do? A: Report to moderators immediately.

  7. Q: How do I know who and how much I've pledged for? A: Look at your comment history. Moderators DO NOT handle any aspect of pledging.

  8. Q: What type of posts get the most visibility? A: Specific and structured posts. Our euthanasia rule states no emojis and has a format for a reason: the algorithm improves when the format is followed and your posts reach more home pages. Posts with a picture or video see more traffic as well.

  9. Q: I can't pledge, foster, or adopt right now. What can I do to help? A: Like, comment, and share.

  10. Q; I see "boost" in lots of comments, what does this do? A: Comments boost a post to increase traffic.

  11. Q: Does commenting "boost" actually boost a post? A: Commenting the single word does not. Comments with 5 or more words DO boost a post. Remember that multiple comments or spamming boost on a post NEGATIVELY impacts its visibility. One longer comment does more than multiple small ones.

This should cover all of our most asked questions. If you have additional, please leave them in the comments and we will answer as we can. As always, rescuing takes a village and on behalf of the mod team, we're so grateful to have as large of a village as ours. <3

Donations/Supplies Plea Monty Made It! Amazon Wishlist to Help Him Start His New Life

Monty’s Amazon Wishlist

https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/PFKY3UHL9PTL

Hi everyone! I thought I should introduce myself and share some good news about Monty. I adopted Monty #A2093543, an 11-month-old puppy who came into BARC in Houston, Texas, as a stray. BARC then placed him on the euthanasia list for September 2nd. Thankfully, that won’t be the end of his story. Monty is now coming home to me in Massachusetts!

When I first saw Monty’s post and read his shelter notes, I knew I had to save this poor baby. Monty is shy, timid, and scared, and the shelter environment completely overwhelmed him. He would hide his face, avoid eye contact, and freeze when someone tried to walk him. Sometimes, shelter staff had to carry him because he was simply too frightened to move.

He wasn’t a bad or aggressive dog. He was a terrified puppy who had completely shut down because he didn’t understand what was happening to him.

BARC is a very high-volume municipal shelter with limited kennel space. Unfortunately, dogs can be at risk of euthanasia when space is limited, especially when behavioral or medical concerns are also present. For a frightened puppy like Monty, shutting down in that environment can make an already difficult situation even harder.

I couldn’t just scroll past knowing what was going to happen to him. September 2nd could have been the end of his story, but instead, I adopted him and saved him from being put down. Now he gets the chance to grow up and experience the life he deserves.

Because I live in Massachusetts, getting Monty safely out of a shelter in Houston and all the way to his new home isn’t something I could do alone. I am incredibly thankful for Save Some Souls Rescue, which stepped in to help make his out-of-state adoption possible and coordinate his safe transport from Texas to me in Massachusetts. I truly cannot thank them enough for helping me bring my boy home.

I know arriving here won’t instantly erase Monty’s fear or everything he has been through. My biggest priority is giving him a quiet, safe, and stable home where he can decompress at his own pace. He’ll have patience, stability, love, his own bed and toys, and all the time he needs to come out of his shell, learn to trust, play, explore, and finally just get to be a puppy without having to be afraid.

I’m currently getting everything ready for Monty’s arrival and have put together an Amazon wishlist with some of the things he’ll need when he gets here. I’m taking on the responsibility of giving him the home and care he deserves, but any help getting him settled and giving him a little head start in his new life would mean so much to me.

Monty’s Amazon Wishlist

https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/PFKY3UHL9PTL

If anyone would like to send Monty something from his wishlist, I would be incredibly grateful. I’m not asking for money, and there is absolutely no obligation to purchase anything. If you happen to find a better or less expensive alternative to something I’ve listed, recommendations are always welcome, too.

I also want to thank everyone who shared Monty’s post, commented, advocated for him, or helped keep his face visible while his time was running out. Whether you supported him directly or simply celebrated that he made it, you helped give this scared little puppy something more meaningful than anything on a wishlist. You gave him the chance to grow up.

I’ll make sure to share updates as Monty arrives and begins settling into his new life.

From a scared stray puppy in a Houston shelter to a home waiting for him in Massachusetts, you made it, Monty. You’re safe now, and your new life is waiting for you.

CW: Euthanasia URGENT FINAL NOTICE - DEADLINE 9/10 AT 2:00 PM PDT Confirmed Pregnant Long-Stay Dogo Argentino Mix Sprinkles (ID: A595517) at San Bernardino City Shelter, CA. 70 lbs, friendly, facing severe kennel stress. Transportation is available across the US and Canada!

Hi everyone, I am a volunteer networking shelter dogs, and I am begging for a miracle for a beautiful young mama before her final clock runs out. Sprinkles has an urgent final notice exit deadline of Wednesday, September 9th at 2:00 PM PDT. She has spent nearly two full months at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.
Sprinkles is a gorgeous 1-year-old female white Dogo Argentino mix (Animal ID: A595517)who weighs 70.00 lbs. She was brought into the shelter as a stray on July 9th. Her finder fell in love with her sweet nature, noting she was incredibly friendly and curious from the moment she was found. However, her stay has reached a critical tipping point:
Confirmed Pregnancy: On September 3rd, shelter veterinary walking rounds officially confirmed her pregnancy. The paperwork notes she requires prenatal and postpartum housing conditions that exceed the municipal facility's current resources.
Severe Kennel Stress: Because she has spent her critical youth behind bars, shelter logs from August 26th indicate she is at an extreme risk for severe mental distress and mental decline from the constant isolation.
The loud, crowded shelter environment is highly detrimental to a young pregnant dog, and the paperwork states clearly that "this animal requires monitoring, care, or housing conditions that exceed the resources currently available at our municipal facility." She desperately needs a dedicated foster home or an approved 501(c)(3) rescue group to pull her immediately so she can safely decompress in a calm environment and prepare for her upcoming puppies.
āœˆļø TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE US AND CANADA! Distance will not stand in the way of saving this little family—transportation can be fully arranged for an approved foster home or rescue backing! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦
How you can save Sprinkles right now:
Foster or Adopt: Call Heather immediately at 847-445-4036 and reference ID A595517. Please act fast, call right away!
Pledge Donations: Taking on a large-breed pregnant dog and an entire future puppy litter is a massive financial commitment for independent rescues. If you can pledge any dollar amount to help cover her prenatal care, please DM me directly. Every bit helps us find a rescue pull!
Upvote and Comment: Please upvote and comment on this post for visibility so it hits the Reddit algorithms quickly before Thursday afternoon.
Let's find this beautiful white mama a safe, soft place to land. Save Sprinkles! šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½ā£ļø

CW: Euthanasia URGENT MEDICAL DEADLINE - 9/10 AT 2:00 PM PDT Unnamed 9yo Senior Cane Corso Gentle Giant (ID: A597712) at San Bernardino City Shelter, CA. 120 lbs, "Very Sweet," marked RESCUE ONLY due to masses and hind leg weakness. Transportation is available across the US and Canada!

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am a volunteer networking shelter dogs, and I am begging for an immediate rescue plan for a truly special senior gentle giant. This unnamed boy has an urgent medical placement deadline of Thursday, September 10th at 2:00 PM PDT. He is out of time at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.
He is a magnificent 9-year-old male blue and white Cane Corso (Animal ID: A597712)weighing 120.00 lbs. He was brought in as a friendly stray on September 5th. Despite his massive size and the clear discomfort he is in, shelter veterinary staff explicitly noted: "Dog is BAR, very sweet, easy to handle. Very sweet!" šŸ¾ā¤ļø
Because he has severe geriatric medical needs, he is designated as RESCUE ONLY. His intake and evaluation logs detail:
Multiple Masses: He has a large, baseball-sized mass on the front aspect of his lower back leg (left tarsus) and a second golf-ball-sized mass on his left side near his hip. He needs a comprehensive senior exam, blood work, and biopsies.
Mobility Issues: He is ataxic (wobbly/uncoordinated) in his back legs, slow to rise, and moves very cautiously, which may be due to severe age-related arthritis or neurological changes. He is currently on Rimadyl for pain management.
Advanced Dental Disease: He has heavy dental wear and severe tartar build-up.
Temporal Muscle Atrophy: He shows muscle wasting on the sides of his skull.
The shelter paperwork states explicitly that "this animal requires medical care beyond what can be provided in a shelter environment." Because he is Rescue Only, he cannot be directly adopted by the public from the facility. An independent 501(c)(3) rescue must tag him, but they need an immediate breed-experienced foster home with no stairs to accommodate his heavy weight and wobbly back legs, alongside financial pledges to back his upcoming veterinary care.
āœˆļø** TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE US AND CANADA! Distance will not stand in the way of saving this gentle giant—transportation can be fully arranged for an approved foster home or 501(c)(3) rescue backing! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦
**How you can save this sweet boy right now:

Foster or Adopt: Call Heather immediately at 847-445-4036 and reference ID A597712. Please act fast, call right away!
Pledge Donations: Senior giant-breed medical cases are very expensive. If you can pledge any dollar amount to help a rescue group cover his senior blood work, x-rays, and mass evaluations, please DM me directly. Every dollar counts!
Upvote and Comment: Please upvote and comment on this post for visibility so it hits the Reddit algorithms quickly before Thursday.
Let's find this "very sweet" senior giant a soft place to rest his head. Save this Cane Corso! šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½ā£ļø

Adoption/Foster Plea Houston German shepherd Dog Roxas needs a foster or a forever home ASAP

ROXAS DESPERATELY NEEDS A FOSTER HOME -- HIS LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!!!!!!

Roxas was rescued from Harris County Animal Shelter of Houston with good intention to save his life, but his foster's work scheduled changed and now Roxas basically stays in crate all day.

He is a 2 year old German Shepherd, who needs to be able to run, play, and get socialized. But now, he is just living confined in a kennel. This is unhealthy for him emotionally and physically. Foster's elderly mother is unable to handle him when she lets him out in the yard, as he does not like to come back inside.

We desperately need a foster home so that he can become a dog again.

Roxas is not getting any socialization and lack of socialization can put dogs in so much danger.

He is a beautiful boy, 2 years old, 75 lb, and we really need your help to Save him.

Please share far and wide to get him the right foster home or a very experienced forever home.

Apply via savesomesouls.com to adopt Roxas. Foster Application available by clicking

Out of state adoption available. Fosters must be in Houston, TEXAS or within 70 miles radius

šŸŽ„ Watch Queen La's beautiful video right here first to see her sweet soul:https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1C8tadh9Sw/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Hi everyone, I am a volunteer networking shelter dogs, and I am begging for a miracle for a stunning girl before her final clock runs out. Queen La has been granted a brief extension until Tuesday, September 8th at 2:00 PM PDT. She is completely out of time at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter. [1, 2]
Queen La is a breathtaking 2-year-old female black and brown Doberman Pinscher mix (Animal ID: A595023). She has been waiting patiently behind bars since June 27th, spending her entire summer overlooked in a cramped cage. Due to her extensive length of stay, the shelter has issued an emergency placement notice because she is developing severe kennel stress and mental distress from the constant isolation. [1, 2]
Shelter evaluations note that she is a very smart, striking dog who will benefit tremendously from additional training, structure, and decompression outside of a facility setting. Dobermans are incredibly loyal, sensitive, and family-oriented companions who do not thrive in loud shelter environments. She desperately needs an experienced foster home or an approved 501(c)(3) rescue group to pull her immediately so she can stretch her legs and decompress. [1, 2]
āœˆļø** TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE ACROSS THE US AND CANADA! Distance will not stand in the way of saving Queen La—transportation can be fully arranged for an approved foster home or rescue backing! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦
**How you can save Queen La right now:

Foster or Adopt: Call Heather immediately at 847-445-4036 and reference ID A595023. Please act fast, call right away!
Pledge Donations: Financial pledges make it significantly easier for independent rescue groups to take on long-stay dogs. If you can pledge any dollar amount to help a rescue cover her care, please DM me directly.
