The empty case looks and feels like metal - can it be recycled?

I've looked around the Internet and can't seem to find this out, so I'm hoping some redditors will know.

I am final year chemical engineer and got placed with 15LPA. I don't think of working as an employee forever and want to do something of my own. And found interest on the plastic recycling unit. I have a lot of free time of about an year which I can spend building a recycling unit.

I’ve been reading about Hong Kong’s regulated e-waste system and one planning issue caught my attention.

During the early planning stage, the expected number of relevant electronics sellers was around 600.

After the scheme was implemented, the number of registered sellers was 3,296 in 2018.

That doesn’t automatically mean every later logistics cost came from the forecasting gap. There were other operational factors involved.

But from a recycling operations point of view, it raises a useful question.

If a collection network is designed around one level of demand and the real service base turns out to be several times larger, when do you stop adding vehicles, routes and handling capacity to the original model and instead redesign the network?

Hong Kong is now re-tendering collection and operation services for WEEE·PARK, so this seems like the kind of issue that should feed directly into the next system design.

Discussion question:
For people who work with e-waste or other take-back schemes, what data would you want before redesigning the collection network — pickup density, appliance mix, route time, storage capacity, failed collections, cost per tonne, or something else?

I just do it for funsies, and you know to recycle stuff.

I have pounds and pounds of used AAs at my workplace. We hold them because Staples used to take them back and give a rebate. That program is over. Can anyone provide me with some hope? We are in NYC. I know the city has special collection programs, but they seem to only welcome rechargeable batteries.

Last week, a federal judge in Portland handed down one of the more consequential recycling-policy rulings of the year — and it happened right here in Oregon, our home state since 1977.

On August 27, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon ruled in National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors v. Feldon that Oregon's Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act — the state's extended producer responsibility (EPR) packaging law — does not violate the dormant Commerce Clause, due process, or the private-nondelegation doctrine. The 71-page decision followed a five-day bench trial and reverses the same court's own preliminary injunction from this past February. Trade coverage is calling it the first time a federal trial court has upheld a state EPR packaging statute against a full constitutional challenge. NAW has indicated it's reviewing an appeal.

For those of us who supply and service compaction and recycling equipment, this matters beyond the legal trivia. EPR laws redirect real money toward producer-funded recycling infrastructure — which tends to mean more MRF investment, more sorting capacity, and steadier demand for the compactors, balers, and chute systems that move material through the system. Similar EPR challenges are pending in California and Colorado, and how those cases land will shape equipment demand up and down the West Coast for years to come.

We don't have a dog in the litigation itself. But whichever way these rulings go, they change what our customers are building toward — so we're watching this one closely.

Quick note first: it's Europe only for now (UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). Sorry US folks, your system is a different beast.

I'm one person, not a company, and I spent the last few months building this because I was tired of standing in front of the bins guessing. Pizza box, coffee cup, foil lid, blister pack. The rules are different in every council and municipality, and the item never tells you.

The app is called Kur Mesti? which is Lithuanian for "where do I throw it?". You pick your municipality once. Then you either take a photo of the item or describe it in a few words, and it tells you which container it goes in where you live and why. There's a short prep tip with each answer (rinse, lid off, scrunch test for film) and a map of nearby drop-off points like bottle banks, deposit return machines and recycling centres for the stuff that can't go kerbside.

In the UK it covers all 361 councils. Same for every other country, down to the individual municipality.

Things I decided at the start and won't change:

• 100 percent free. No premium tier, no paywall.
• No ads.
• No account. No email, no name, no profile. Just an anonymous device ID.
• Photos are used once to identify the item and deleted from the server within 48 hours. Your history stays on your phone.
• Not affiliated with any government or waste company. Rules come from official municipal and national sources and every source is listed inside the app.

It gets things wrong sometimes. Odd items confuse the recognition, and local rules change. Every answer has an "incorrect" button and I read every report and fix the data by hand.
