Hello. Im thinking about buying a house with a pool.

Ive never owned a pool before, so im concerned about the costs and if it would be worth it?

Has anyone here ever regretted getting/buying a pool? If so, why?

Again. Im not building the pool. The pool is already there, so no real big initial costs.

My pool is old, about 35 years old. It's small but we get heavy rain storms and it fills up pretty fast. I have nowhere for the water to go when I pump it out. I have a backwash hose that I use and the only place for the water to go is into my yard. There is no grass there only weeds because the chlorine kills it. I can't run the hose out to the street because it would have to go across the sidewalk and the HOA would have a fit. Any suggestions?

Assume a 120k litre in-ground pool in southern Ontario with a mesh cover. The pool is going to be closed for 6 months due to cold weather.

Surely by the time you open, it the pool is going to be green no matter what you do when closing won't it?

If you put lots of liquid chlorine in and filter as part of closing, you are going to dump a lot of it out as part of lowering the water. The chlorine isn't going to last very long anyway and water is going to get in via rain and snow and leaves blowing onto the cover over the closed time isn't going to help.

So surely the pool is going to be green when you open whatever you do. I can't see what you could do to keep it clear for 6 months when closed if there is no way to keep it clear for 3 weeks without shocking when it is open.

If there is no way to keep it clear from close to open wouldn't you be better off just spending your money on liquid chlorine when opening rather than any chemicals when closing?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm doing the rest of the closing and this is just about putting chemicals in after the mechanical side if it - lowering water blowing lines etc

**UPDATE: I’m moving FC to 40. Before commenting on phosphates - Uncle Jacks Purple Stuff has Phosphonates in it which tests the same as normal phosphates. Algae cannot eat phosphonates.

8/28 8lb of ascorbic acid to clean iron stains - did an amazing job.

8/29 overdosed by 40% Uncle Jacks Purple Stuff….

Pool turned whitish cloudy - over the next day. See pic.

8/30 cleaned cartridge filter and salt cell - broke connecting nut - pool down for a couple days in 100+ heat and had low chlorine - I believe due to ascorbic acid.

Pool turned green and murky

9/1 - pool fixed - ran pump overnight

9/2 - no change to clarity or color - added 3 gallons of liquid chlorine plus 3lb of shock.

9/4 - pool is clear, but green - like a sprite bottle.

9/7 - no change - I’ve cleaned cartridges 3x in the last 3-4 days. Barely anything coming out of them.

I’m assuming this is metal oxidation - our tap water also has iron and copper.

I’ve read that if I use phosphate remover that the metals will be released back and stain the pool.

I’m also told that the phosphate jumping up is most likely from phosphonates from uncle jacks - not organic material.

Anything I can do besides empty/refill?

Our house burned down in April, we’re in the Charlotte NC USA area. We’re still a year out from moving back in. Our neighbor has been great, offering hose and setup a small pump. We’ve been adding liquid chlorine to keep things from growing. We’ve got a robot running to pickup larger debris. Demo of the house is almost complete, but at one point I think they yanked out the pool light wire and since then we haven’t been able to maintain water level above the skimmers. Or maybe cracked some pipe.. not sure.

Looking for maintenance advice over the next year and then based on photos and above, what we might be looking at as far as getting it up and running like new again. Resurface concrete, replacing pump/filter system etc. Any advice as far as When to engage in fixing up the pool area relative to the house and needs based on what you see. Anything I should make sure to coordinate with the GC on? I’ll take all advice! Appreciate you all.

We bought a house last year that has a inground pool. Roughly 33,000 gallons, and is salt water. The last owners just hired all the work to be done. We dont have that liberty. We found a local company which helped us get the water taken care of but now I have having issues with the Pentair Intellichlor IC40, the cell light (circled in red) keeps flashing. When I check the life left on it, it reads 60%. I have cleaned it twice this season. Just looking to find out if there is something I'm missing or if it needs to be replaced.

My original 2-speed pump locked up so I need to replace it. I've been told 2-speed pumps are no longer made, so I'm left with a variable speed pump ($$$) or a single speed. My current pump is 2 HP, which I'm also told isn't made anymore either. I have one quote for a 1.65 HP pump and another for a 1 HP pump. The guy who quoted the 1 HP pump said it would be sufficient but I'm concerned since the existing pump is 2 HP. My pool is inground, salt, 12k gallons, electric heat. It originally had a pressure side cleaner but I've switched to battery-powered cleaning robots so nothing runs off the pump. Thoughts?

Ok I know these things aren’t meant to last forever, but my lord this thing was completely rusted through after only 7 years of use. It literally was crumbling apart as I removed it - the mounting bracket just disintegrated.

Come on Hayward, can’t you build these things to be a bit more resilient to the elements? I kept this pump out of direct contact with rain and always properly drained and winterized it at the end of every season.

Oh well, another $600 replacement :-(

Looks like I have a leak at the out flow port of my multi valve when the rpm gets high on my pump. Appears to be coming from in between the MP and the PVC connection at the bottom

Not taken it off yet to look as it’s ok for now rather than not being ready for the job to fix the actual cause yet.

With the multi port valve being 9 years old, should I just plan on replacing it regardless since I’ll have the connection taken apart? Basically just order a new multi port valve to have on hand since (probably) is a hairline fracture and would not like to wait a bunch of days to get one if it’s the issue versus not having one handy?

Went into a depression, now my pool looks like a swamp. Any advice on next steps?

Last fall and since i have great trees around the pool to provide shade in the texas heat, now comes the results. LEAVES and more leaves.

Any innovative way to keep the off a cover? thinking of a pvc
Quanset hut over it. Any other ideas?

Looking for thoughts on this pool design! We live in a warm climate, so we’ll never need to cover the pool. I really like the social aspect of this layout and how it seems designed for people to hang out and enjoy the pool together.

DIYers — how do you blow out your pool lines when closing for the season? Curious what equipment/method you use.

My husband's grandparent's pool is constantly battling algae (including currently). I know there is a history of using pucks, so I surmised the CYA was likely too high with not enough chlorine being added to account for the demand. They didnt want to hear it so I just bided my time until I could obtain a sample on the sly. Finally had my opportunity today and here are the results...

i knew pools lost water fro. evaporation but didnt think mine was losing this much stared marking the water level every few days nd drop was actually pretty noticeable

for a while i tho i had a small leak somewhere now im just trying to fig out whats normal evaporation and whats not especially with the warmer weather

Hello, I noticed this crack in my plaster pool today. It had a bit of scale dripping down the side. I filled a syringe with some coffee and it doesn’t seem like it’s leaking any water. No noticeable increase in my water bill either. Is this cosmetic or reason to worry?

I am absolutely struggling with whatever this is on our gunnite. no amount of scrubbing with either a metal brush or a pumice stone gets rid of it. I can’t scratch it off with my fingernail. In assumed it was black algae but thought that a pumice would at least scrape it off. Any ideas? I have a salt generating cell, everything is balanced, it’s just these black spots.

I purchased a Haywood heater last year. Over the winter, mice made a nest inside and destroyed my ignition wire. How do you keep mice away? Thinking of disconnecting ignition wire and storing it inside for the winter. It cost be $160 to replace.
