The Course by Ed Miller…
Is it a good book for a relative noob trying to take the game more seriously? Or should I take those ~$50 and invest them in an online course instead?
Thoughts? Alternatives?

His other books are better first reads for sure. But that book is okay too. I’d read it later tho. For a total beginner I’d recommend his ‘no limit theory and practice’, ‘reading hands at no limit’, and ‘playing the player’, first. Also there’s a book called ‘the poker mindset’ by Matt Hilger that a beginner should read. After that maybe you can read Eds ‘pokers 1%’ and ‘playing the course’. Goodluck sir

Absolutely the first book you should read period. It is one of the very few books that takes things from the beginning and tries everything to explain why the game works the way it does instead of just telling you how to play in various situations.

Yes. And don’t even bother to read the whole thing right away. If you master and follow the first three skills, you will be better than the majority of low stakes players.

I think this book still crush live poker cash game but i. Would be cautions with above 50 nl online limit

It has some good parts, but there’s also a lot that I don’t like. If you’re going to read one of Ed Miller’s books, Playing the Player is much better. Poker’s 1% is complete garbage, so don’t buy it.

Depends on how "serious" you are and what formats you want to play? I would guess almost all online stuff has more value these days and books are probably out dated

I think it's a very good first book to read, but I'm biased because it's the first poker book I read! It goes over very basic game strategy and increases in complexity throughout the book in a very easy to follow way. Free pdfs of it are out there online
