It's because it shares the same germanic roots, from sauerkraut and derriere: sauerkratderriere, or screwdriver.

Yeah, but he wasn't alone, he had a crew with him, that's why it's "Philip S. and his crew", or 'screw for short. that's where the initial apostrophe in 'screwdriver comes from. Then language evolved and we dropped the apostrophe. I think Saussure wrote about it in one of his books.

I never realised! But it is. In French there is a saying: pédaler dans le screwdriver, in the olden times it used to be pédaler dans la choucroute but as language evolved and because choucroute means sauerkraut which is part of the root for the word screwdriver, the word got substituted/modernised in the saying
