The past and possible future here

Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is all to the best of my knowledge.

9 months ago - This sub started as an offshoot from /r/poetry when essofluffy had the idea to put together a book of 100 poems from 100 different redditors.

~ 5-6 months ago - We hit that 100 poem/unique submitter mark, and started trying to figure out where to go from there. (Licensing, Funding, Editing, etc).

~ 4 months ago - "Licensing We will vote on the licensing in the coming week. I personally am for just having the poems be copyrighted as all works are the moment they are created by the author. Crowd funding I am going to set up a indiegogo campaign hopefully by next we and we will need everyones support to do well" (via http://www.reddit.com/r/poemsbyreddit/comments/1tjwtc/update/ )

Currently - Limbo, basically. essofluffy's still active on reddit, as am I, and I'm not sure about the other mods here. My job (and by extension, living conditions and free time) changed significantly ~4 months ago as well, so I've not really been active here very much. I know some people have a "master" copy of the poem listing, or at least a master up to a few months ago.

Editing: There's a master copy floating somewhere.

Licensing: Some talk was had about various Creative Commons formats, but a 100% contributor vote never occurred (IIRC, we got about 10 people to comment what their preference was).

Funding: essofluffy talked about an IGG campaign (as noted in the update link above), though I don't recall ever getting a link to the campaign.

Other: some contributors deleted their profiles after submission. We've had more than 100 contributors at this point, and there was some talk of "Let's not just take the first 100 to contribute, but take whoever wants in until publication time", or "Well, we still want to stick with 100, but we're gonna (somehow) determine what's good enough to publish instead of taking the first 100."

At this point, given my perceived role as sort of logistical support for this project (which I've failed somewhat at) and my perception of essofluffy's role as nominal leader of this project/sub (ergo, the one who should be making the updates regularly and pushing for more interaction from subscribers), I'll be leaving this up as the stickied update for a few weeks, then stepping down as a mod here. I've reached near the limit of what I'm able to do for this project, such as it is, and my free time's significantly more limited than in the past.

I can't speak as to whether there's a realistic future for this project, but if essofluffy doesn't put out a serious and detailed update within the month, I'd say it's probably safe to call it dead.

You stoke my fire NSFW

Upvotes

Bored at work, I sit and ponder,
just wanna crack you like thunder.

Eating you out, I feel most alive,
in your pool I love to dive.

Got me craving and restless,
the way you drain me leaves me breathless.

Your curves and breath I desire,
'cause you're the woman to stoke my fire.

I look for you on every post.

Upvotes

I look for signs.

I look for hints that it might be you.

For a subtle, definitive clue that you are the one that wrote something.

I want you to miss me.

I want you to care.

I know you don’t.

I want you to need a way to let it out.

But you won’t.

You don’t write.

I know this is a waste of time.

Yet I choose to waste all of it, hoping that you might.

(my first attempt at poetry, Is it bad? 🫣)

Since this is my first ever poem, I am extremely proud of myself that I was able to be satisfied and make it rhyme lolol, also the “two deadly spiders”, I had no idea it actually had a symbolic meaning , I just put that because it rhymed perfectly :3

Memories of You

Upvotes

Your memories stood like mighty oaks at the forefront of my mind.
One by one I stopped watering the ground they were tethered to, purposely starving them.
Not because they weren’t beautiful to look at but because they stole daylight from the part of me that needed to grow.

They always served a purpose but everything runs its course.
Their meaning not dependent on how long they stood for but how they shaped me over time.
Fallen, they offer themselves to my psyche like nutrients to the earth.
Learning from what they meant to me as the once healthy pillars are broken down.

Upon their return, the deeply rooted foundations tore at the soil and ripped at adjacent memories.
Altering a landscape that became so synonymous with the thoughts of us that entering it felt like seeing you again.
Days of the year, visiting annually like wildflowers, basking in the shade of time we spent together.
This once sanctuary will still see the wildflowers bloom, but in the canopy of a healthier forest.

Maybe We’re Just Fire

Upvotes

War rages within me -
who I am, and meant to be
Star crossed and ill fated,
A cautious tale of tragedy

wrestling with the demons
generations left behind.
I’ve lost reality,
Disconnected space and time.

A soft heart, too big,
for the life I was given,
A wanderers spirit
With no place worth living

Passing nights counting stars
And days losing time
In search of a soul
That would truly see mine

Then there was you—
all hunger, all flame,
with bedroom eyes
that called out my name.

No vacancy,
yet I knocked anyway.
I knew I should go
but you begged me to stay.

Does the beautiful journey
Justify the disaster?
Is the yearning and burning
Worth what will come after?

But I don't want that lesson.
I don't want to be wise.
I don't want to be rescued
from the fire in your eyes.

From this fire burning brightly
From the thing that could destroy me.

I want you.

I need you.

Even if the meaning
only comes when we are through,
when hindsights in the rearview mirror
and it all points back to you.

A life I almost lived.
A love I almost kept.
A version of myself
I could have been if I had left.

The world is littered with empires
that believed themselves eternal.
So what makes us different?
Able to survive the inferno

You burn like I do.
All passion, no fear.
We know what this will cost us—
and still we stand right here.

Our hearts wear matching scars,
we're branded just the same.
Two fools beneath the heavens,
still reaching through the flame.

And that’s the tragedy.
Maybe that’s the curse:
to find the thing you’d die for
and somehow lose it first.

Maybe we're just fire—
beautiful, wild, and untamed,
destined to become ashes
for the privilege of being flame.

And when the night is silent
and the stars have lost their light,
when everything we wanted
has surrendered to the night,

The restless winds will rumble
Of a spark turned to flame
Now left scattered in ashes
Whispering your name.

William Tell

Lets play a game called william tell
You look dumb enough to try it so we’ll have some fun
You stand right there with this apple on your head
And ill try to knock it off ya with my daddy’s gun

A couple for your cheeks and a couple for your chin
You were dumb enough to trust me when i called you “friend”
Now keep yourself steady and your mouth shut tight
Cause if you jostle that apple ill hit you again

I leave a stray hound barkin in the rain
Never know the kind of puddle that done wet his nose
A good dog sits while a starving dog begs
And a sick dog you kick when he gets too close

Beatin on a dead horse to work him into glue
Snatch the straw from a gift horse’s mouth all day
An old blind fool wouldnt stumble over me
And yet you reckon when i beckon you to come and play

No one likes like a poet till theyre dead and gone
Cause life aint sweet on a silverstein
So if you see me coming better run and hide
Cause no ones gonna save you even if you scream

A proper jolly roger, rusty razor in hand
With a black-toothed grin gonna rattle some bones
the inferno come screamin just draggin me down
You can hear me crying softly “just leave me alone”

Aint my fault that youre easy to pick on
Nothin quite right in the head you hang low
Ill throw rocks and things at you and sing;
“I got a heart as pure as snow”

Lost

Upvotes

Lost
Losing myself in a void of desperation
Mental turmoil
Una cruda moral y es mi culpa
No excuses, just reasons
Just reasons and excuses
It’s too late to for me
My soul is tainted
I was mistaken to think I could change
Loose nickel and dimes no penny’s in sight
Buy a dub to feel loved
When a door closes my windows don’t open
Peeking out expecting something
5 am again no dreams no shut eyes
Restless nights don’t cry
The facets run dry
An empty well is just a hole
I’ve hit the bottom
Shit out of luck as my friend once said
I’ll just have another drink from the bottle
Hoping I’ll be worth more than the tears I shed
Game over is what gives me hope
Not an option and not for good reasons
To the end of her mind is where I drove her
Wish I did more than just pass on fear
I don’t blame her
I don’t blame her
I don’t blame her
I talk like I’ve drank all the wine
Knowing i don’t have a clear mind
Lost in void of desperation
I quote famous people like I know what they talk about
I could never understand
Strike 3 coming from the pitchers mouth
Home run is something that’s impossible
I give up I’m done I wanna call it quits
I’m to much of a coward to go through with it
Maybe one day I’ll man up and it’ll happen
Going backwards I will never manage
Fast forward I’ll still be the same
Living life poetically pathetic is not how want to exist

Billions

Upvotes

There’s a million reasons I should hate you. Probably trillions why I fell for you. But the billions, the in between. That’s where I pay attention, that’s the number of reasons I have to just live in the moment, where I don’t yearn for you anymore but I hold the memories like fragile glass. Delicately, remembering the fun but not the feelings, applying to much pressure cracking the art and unleashing the grief of a lost companion. Where I remember the reasons we didn’t work but find comfort in knowing what once was. Because even in the billions it comes back to a cliché I never quite understood until I met you. It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all

September

Upvotes

It is September

I wouldn't have been able to face that then.

All the heaviness it brings

A nightmare, I'd call it.

And that I still do.

But the freedom I chased,

To move about in peace,

Freedom comes from within.

The mind cannot be broken or ran from

So I can walk towards September now,

Someday I will understand,

And nightmares are supposed to end

Only am I left with myself upon waking

So in this nightmare, in September, maybe I can stop running away and chasing

For it all isn't mine to obtain.

Instead I can move like a river

I won't silence myself, I won't run and chase

What I thought I once was,

A mind confused, ignoring, living and broken still, and to always be.

Or I can lay like a stargazer, feeling the vibration of travelling footsteps around me

Each on a grand adventure

And I will be at peace with it

As will I embark again in due time.

The big dipper may even run circles around me

And I will let myself be filled with awe

As I lay there sunken deep in the soft trodden grass, studying the hour.

Someday I will move on from this hour,

But maybe sooner will the crickets of summer still

and the winter wind begin to howl.

Even then, will I laugh along with the stars.

This isnt my home anyways.

Somehow I can still recall the second half of my mantra,

A repetitive, ancient reminder.

Even in the uncertain,

It will not be the same forever.

September's strength is only a nightmare

And a nightmare is only a dream.

And a dream makes its home in a suitable mind

This isn't my home anyways.

I live for autumn

Thumbnail
Upvotes

fell in love with her in the autumn,

and I fell out of love in the winter.

Her eyes, once brown as autumn leaves,

have now turned bleak.

Her skin, once tan as the autumn sky,

is pale as winter snow.

Her hair was golden as the autumn trees,

now withered away.

Her smile, once seen from a thousand miles,

is nowhere to be seen.

Her soul was as sweet as harvest fruit,

now rotting in bitterness.

She rots in the winter,

but grows in the autumn

An Angel Beyond Words — my first poem 🪽

Thumbnail
Upvotes

This is my first poem. I'd genuinely appreciate feedback, especially on the imagery and flow.

An Angel Beyond Words 🪽

I searched through countless words

trying to find one that could describe her,

but even if every beautiful word were combined,

none would come close.

She is so beautiful, even words fall short.

Perhaps no language was ever born to describe her beauty;

she is so majestic, even words fall silent before her.

Then I understood why words failed me.

Perhaps when the clouds burst,

an angel fell to Earth.

And that angel was her.

Ambition

Upvotes

Mind trapped in facade forced

uncomfortable

Scared and alone truly.

Continue on.

Must..............

empty.

RAGE lingers

below thought.

discreet low to core.

deeper than will.

will to love.

love to will.

Paradoxical

Just dipping my toes into some poetry while I continue trying to improve as a writer. Went for a minimalist approach but I put emotion into every line. Would appreciate feedback, keep in mind the raw approach was intentional.

This is a twin cinema poem :) second time writing one... To combine them, start from " once upon a time, a girl and a boy that man", the two lines are slightly staggered so it may be a bit confusing to read

Start from" that man," and hold like some sort of a ruler(to help with reading boy do I hate this formatting) while you progressively move down the combined poem, and read the lines right above the ruler, and if both left and right appear FULLY than read from left to right...

I'll fix the formatting in the future but I am rather proud of this :)

(Ignore the part outside the table it's my drafting hehehehe)

The sun is soft and golden
The day has turned to dawn, I fill my lungs with the air of mildew all my storms are gone

My flowers have been watered it’s time for skies to clear, let the birds sing their song sweet symphonies in my ears

Let my boat set sail down winding rivers and fill it with the waste left from time, some set fires to their past but put a bow on mine, without the steps behind me I can’t get very high so even with the splinters my body is sublime

My smile goes to my eyes I want my joy to scream, my fields no longer filled with trash the futures clear to see, let the wind blow away all that’s done all that’s old, and let my new found aspiration shield me from its cold

I have no more to fear to climb my mountains I know what’s at the peak, a soft and golden sun, a serene and placid creek, a whole new world beyond my garden waiting to be seen, a future so full of promise but this presents good for me.

have you ever? (random poem)

Upvotes

have you ever felt so looked at but not seen?

have you ever gone through life looking through a glass window pane

seeing yourself but not recognizing the reflection?

have you ever spoken to a brick wall that is your soul

a wall so thick, yet translucent

like sticky fingers on a foggy window

you can't see, but the vision is there

you see yourself through a veil, through animals and feelings humans cannot prevail

it's dark and it's scary, but it's also serene and bright

but nobody can see it, they can only view what they choose to see

they can only go as deep as they have

they are bleak, dissident, yet precious

they perceive only what they can comprehend

it's like touching your own hand through a glass door, a mirror, a mirage

an image, tangible yet non existent

the feeling is but a memory, you've been here before

you don't like it here

you're soft and fuzzy, like an undeveloped picture

the dark room feels cool and comforting,

the light is vast and shocking but it forces you to open your mind

it's painful and gauging

eyes are blind, heart is sore but the mind is reckless and damning

a curse and a touching gift.

to give and to take, to return and retrieve

oh have you ever felt normal?

willow

Upvotes

I walked the road I used to walk,

and caught glimpses of memories,

that were clinging to the bottom of a blanket.

I walked the road I used to walk,

and tried to imagine where what part of school was,

seeing a woman walk around in her new apartment.

I walked the road I used to walk,

and the willow that used to skim over my head,

gave my face a nostalgic embrace.

I walked the roads I used to walk,

and when I cried,

it was finally just because of

me.

_________________________________________________________________

okay this is my first poem I'm sharing, I hope you like it! I needed to bring away some stuff and on my way back I saw the road i used to walk home from school, and I really cried again for the first time again in a long time, so i felt I needed to write something as the moment felt really poetic :))

J is for Judas

Upvotes

J is for Judas

Lord, save us from false prophets
draped in flags and selling fear.

From golden idols,
borrowed Bibles,
and crowds that cheer the lie.

Judas had followers too.

Give us wisdom
to recognize the kiss.

Amen.

Poem - Poetry

Upvotes

Why did I turn to poetry?

To fill an aching heart, a heavy hole

That I have no idea who dug?

Filled it full with empty words

Some were said and some were sung

Some came from hate, but were any from love?

I say it is how the heart speaks the soul

But if it is so bleak, so dark down there

Then I would hate to see the colour of my blood

Rage and grief flowing through my veins

An empty heart for these empty days

Where I struggle to know just what to say

So I write my words, this poet’s bricks

Build a wall around the hole, built to the sky

And in this now fortress, I wonder why I cannot cry

Not a tear shed since that day, not one

To mourn the loss of little boy lost to my past

Instead I write this poem, I hide my heart

And I hope to a God I no longer believe

That this storm, this darkness, cannot last.
