𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝑰𝒏𝒇𝒐 I am an 18 year old college student. Any suggestions?

•
u/nad242 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
In the friendliest way possible, I would simply recommend that you stay away from the "recommendations" on Reddit. The only losses I've had along the way have always been related to Reddit. There's nothing innocent here, and it's really rare to find any pure and good advice. Just find another source to use.
•
u/Remarkable_Basis_642 Feb 12 '26
I agree but reddit is just a good place to find companies, then you should do the analysis by yourself using other sources. But i found many stocks that ended up well for me here
•
•
u/Practical_Ad_5875 Feb 15 '26
If Reddit tells you to buy a stock that’s hit ATH do not buy it yet. I saw people telling investors to buy ASTS at 120+ when I said wait for a pull back I got downvoted. 120+ might not matter long term but a better entry saves a lot of money and feels a lot less stressful.
•
•
u/SDAztec74 Feb 12 '26
Not the advice you're looking for so grain of salt it if you'd like, but (admittedly without any other knowledge of your financial situation) you're a college student, playing highly volatile pennystocks with what limited funds you may have is not the best idea.
Everyone here is going to give you a "sure thing", maybe they're right, but more likely they're wrong. It's your money, not mine, but when I was in your shoes 10 years ago, a nearly $300 loss would have been pretty devastating.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
Yeah i completely agree with this take. I still have a high yield savings account with a reasonable amount i put in every month but yes this $300 is still pretty devastating 😭. I try to do as much research as possible before going in on a stock but about 80% of my loss has been with RKLB. I bought it at an average of $81 and it’s recently been hovering around the 65-70 area which has been killing me.
•
u/gosmurfyourself69 Feb 12 '26
If 300$ is devastating then you shouldn’t be playing around with that money.
•
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
its mainly devastating due to the fact that I really had faith in my stocks that i pretty carefully picked. By no means do I have a crazy amount of money but the 300 mainly sucked because of the fact that I just had so much faith in it.
•
u/gosmurfyourself69 Feb 12 '26
Dude that’s the first problem, having faith in stocks? Cmon now. Easy come easy go homie
•
•
u/InitialBison8532 Feb 12 '26
i agree with buddy above, u need to do bracket orders with stop losses so u dont lose anything more than your comfortable with, i would recommend day trading with trading view, and just screening for high volume stocks a few minutes before market open, mark yesterdays highs and lows, get the VWAP addon on trading view and buy on the lows and sell on the highs and don't diddle in the middle, best advice you'll ever get if u wanna trade daily as a hobby and be profitable, if you don't have the time... research and invest or Run. Spent enough time on this thread - L8R.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
Thanks so much brother, Just really new to this and im trying to bet the absolute best understanding of what I can do with my money in this field. Plus i have been wanting to dabble in a little bit of small day trading anyway so maybe this is my sign lol. Thanks for your time and best of luck with your portfolio aswell ✌️
•
Feb 12 '26
Stay away from day trading. If you want to invest, buy dividend stocks and hold them. You won’t get rich quick day trading or playing pennies, you will go poor quick tho!
•
u/Responsible_parrot Surprise me Feb 12 '26
Just keep in mind that the groups and people on social media telling you to buy a stock already own it and want it to go up. Doesn’t mean they are wrong but make sure you really research it and look at the bear cases too. If $300 is painful then you need to make sure you have a lot of conviction before you buy and know where you will cut it or have a plan like selling covered calls.
•
u/hansalvato Feb 12 '26
Yes. Quit while youre ahead. Just but index funds and be smart
•
u/Grouchy-Dot2891 Feb 12 '26
This. Some get lucky, but you are better off indexing with VOO or SPY or QQQ. You'll have a lot more time also.
•
u/usernamedottxt Feb 12 '26
Or get completely out and focus on education. OP is trying to double invest.
•
u/Repulsive_Roof6790 Feb 12 '26
Financial advice here, don't take financial advice from reddit

•
u/LuRo332 Feb 12 '26
Also, dont read comments in the discussions inside the app you are using. Im on Trading212 and the people there are literal apes that dont know what they are doing or saying lol.

u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
Yeah, Im taking everything with a grain of salt. I just appreciate feedback, good or bad and true or false. Its all helpful in its own sense

You will not like this but if you are in college Penny stocks are stupid. Even if you are filthy wealthy they are stupid, your account should be generating fun money or at least paying for condoms.
First off any investment you do needs to be researched by you, don't take suggestions from the peanut gallery do your DD. Nothing on this forum is good advice, even the suggestions I'm going to make.
I'd certainly consider a reliable income fund that pays weekly. $1800 isn't going to get you much in the way of shares, but you might be able to work out something that pays you $30 a week in fun money. Yeah that doesn't sound like much but a little cash is better than no cash.
The other option is to put in into a market growth fund and don't even look at it for 4 years. Well other than to make more deposits. Done right this fund could be your base fund for when you are out of school working full time. Build wealth in that fund and play the penny's by them selves. This take discipline and frankly it is a good reason to have two brokers. Literally have a "retirement" account, at a brokerage, that is one way, and a trading account someplace else.
Here is the thing, most people playing penny's don't make a lot of money and many lose huge amounts of money. The reason is simple they are addicted to it just like some are addicted to Whisky. I never considered Penny's at all until a retired as I never had a surplus of cash that I felt like throwing away. Now I have a little surplus and frankly I put that into various pharma stocks. Making money would be nice but ending cancer and other diseases would be wonderful. Yes I have a portfolio of other stocks, but that is for retirement, gambling is kept under a few percent. Believe me pharma,, especially bio-tech research, is a gamble - so far zero profits. Now don't get me wrong there are lots of stocks beyond pharma, anything related to space will likely be long term buys with a lot of volatility.
By the way another option is to buy single stocks noted for dividends. $1800 will not get you many shares but hopefully you can chose one for keeping the dividend every year even in there is an economic down turn. For example Coke-Cola is around $79 with a fifty cent dividend. If you purchased 2 shares a week for 20 years you would have 2080 shares paying you a good dividend every quarter. Not enough for retirement but it is part of a plan. Sure the price of KO might go up and down but you are not buying for price movement in this case. All you care is that the dividend check comes every quarter. You could give yourself a head start with the remaining bucks and buy 20 or so shares. You can also buy dividend producing ETF's but I'm not convinced that such ETF's make sense for dividend investing.
The point I'm trying to make here is that penny's are the wrong place to focus your attention at the moment. Work on college, study a bit and find at least two girl friends. Get a job, Mary one of those gals and start to work hard on your financial future. Actually while in college see if there is a course, seminar or something that cover persona finance and wealth management. The more you know the sooner financial freedom comes. In the end avoid the idea of putting everything in one theme. I hear about these all in people, be it Tesla, NVIDIA or whomever. Going all in on anything is stupid and can really put you behind if something goes wrong. Start building a base level of security and then work the wild ends of finance.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
I truly appreciate all the time you put into this, And i agree completely, i took the wrong approach at the start and have recently been selling most for losses and putting it into things like voo, spy and other etf’. Thanks brother
•
u/happy123z Feb 15 '26
Learn all you can. Use a play money account to practice without losing anything for a few months. RKLB is a good company and stocks go up amd down. If you're investing you want it to go up over months or years. If your swing trading you want it to go up for a few days or weeks and sell. Thats jard to do and if you're only doing it with 100$ you're only gonna make $20 sometime. Focus on becoming valuable yourself so you can make more money and have more to save and invest.
Many people will tell you too Voo and chill and that will be profitable in the future. If you want higher returns split up your investment money and pick 4 or 5 stocks and etfs that are in different fields and buy them. But stop losses on them. I do 15% below the price I paid. I like stocks that are already doing well and when they go up a good amount I change the stop loss to 15% under the new price. Here are some of my faves right now: IEZ, UWY, FIX, SII, DRTS. Good luck bro! STOP LOSS!•
•
u/Deskbot420 Feb 12 '26
Option A: index funds. In 10 years you’ll be thanking 18 year old you.
Options B: develop a strategy that works for you instead of listening to people on a website that literally know as much as you tell you what to do with your money.
For instance, I used to be a penny stock gambler but lost too much money chasing the dragon. I make smart investments and find stocks that’ll rise 10-20% over the next few weeks or months, and then sell.
It’s not sexy but at 1000$, if you can make 10% off a trade 72 times it becomes a million. At 10k, that number is only 49.
When you look at it from that perspective it becomes a lot more feasible. Difficult but feasible
•
•
u/Buy-NVDA Feb 13 '26
Not enough money that it makes sense to put on etf’s unless you are regularly contributing to it. Id say pick a company you really believe in and full port it. This is what i did when i was a little younger than you and it turned out quite well.
•
u/dr302 Feb 12 '26
Do more research, learning, and always have a stop loss.
I also started investing when I was a freshman in college and I lost $2K in a year. After that, I took a 3 year break and spent a lot of time doing research and trying out different strategies on a paper trading account.
Now, within the last year, I 1000% my portfolio.

You're 18 and in college. Is it a good one? If so, the best investment you can make right now is forming friendships. Instead of flushing your money down the toilet messing with the markets using bogus advice on Reddit, use it for beer money and turn it into lasting friendships. Go have fun with real people in real life. Later on, some of those friends will do good and the network you build now will pay off later. It's less stressful and more fun. And don't forget to study.
•
u/captain_casino Feb 12 '26
Stay away from options and volatile stocks until you're out of school and your finances are stable.
•
•
u/ApprehensivePeak6657 Feb 12 '26
Be super careful. Read a lot, listen to smart people. Less chance to get burned, like I did - lost a 100K right away
•
•
•
u/xRolox Feb 12 '26
Invest what you can afford to lose/not lose in ETFs tracking the S&P in a tax advantaged account like a Roth.
Wait to diversify once you have a big boy job.
•
u/diehard10003 Feb 12 '26
1DTE or 0DTEs and hope for a lottery ticket. With how volatile the market is, viable!
•
u/teh_herper Feb 12 '26
Today, at 9:30 AM, buy 5 call contracts of SPY at the 691 strike price, expiring on the same day (0DTE), and sell before 10:30 AM. Thank me later.

Buy gold. Real, in your hand, gold. Beaten the market for the last 25 years. Been a store of value since before the Bible. Lasted through every war, famine, natural disaster, you name it. Redeemable in any currency. Some countries won't even take dollars right now. While you stack gold, learn from hyper successful people. I mean chronically successful and always be learning.

Stay in school

gonna have to cuz clearly i was an idiot not putting anything in etf’ at the start lmao
•
•
u/Turdtastic Feb 12 '26
Have you looked at Acorns? Dump your money in there add what you can afford to the account each week. You’re young, invest your money wisely now and you can retire early. Trading penny stocks is gambling, only invest what you can afford to lose.
•
•
•
u/hiskias Feb 12 '26
Only gamble what you don't care losing.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
my dad also told me that, Thats why i only have 2k in but its so tempting to just dump it all in 😭

This is actually the answer. Study and develop your skill to be unique and profitable.
•
•
•
u/Professional_East281 Feb 12 '26
Yeah my suggestion is dont do penny stocks. You might get lucky, but youre more likely to end up with losses. I know its not exciting or fun, but just buy index funds periodically.
VTI and VXUS is pretty much all you need. I started around 20, and 7 years later im at $150k. Of course I didnt even have a salary job until I was 23. Its slow but steady.
My first few years I also tried picking stocks. I didnt have much success…
•
u/jj_olli Feb 12 '26
It's actually pretty easy, invest all your money in something that everyone else undervalues and sell that stuff when everyone else is overvaluing it. In the meantime you have to hope that the business you invested in doesn't drop in value.
•
u/ApricotFancy889 Feb 12 '26
Stop playing penny stocks. Jump on SPY or SPX options. If you want a no bs starter, read Step One by George Herrera on Amazon. You need to type the title and author to find it since it’s fairly new. It focuses on execution, not on theory—a practical guide for day trading.
•
u/Accurate_Pay_2242 Feb 12 '26
You don’t have enough to risk chasing short term gains. Look into long term plays.
Look into SLS, ASPI, RDW, and SERV.
They are cheaper stocks so you can accumulate more, riskier yes.
Avoid all the spammers on Reddit posting a new ticker every day.
•
u/Nibblesweasel Feb 12 '26
Get a better, higher paying job before gambling in the stock market.
If you can't find a job that gives you fun money to play around with, then don't gamble in the stock market, dollar cost average a portion of your paycheck into an ETF like SPY and sit on it for the next two decades.
•
u/Moustachiou Feb 12 '26
Research ETFs and Index investing , set it and forget it. You are are18 years old, Penny stocks are basically gambling for you!!! that 1845$ could go to zero if fully invested in penny stocks.
Look into SCHD ,VTI, VOO, REIT, bonds (BND) and diversify with like international ETF.
You can also buy some individual stocks like HOOD, BE, PLTR, RBLX, Apple, Amazon, or Microsoft. Pepsi, KO, Solid business. forget about the bubble , market will adjust and correct eventually..... You could also consider Joby or Archer if you’re interested in emerging technology, but only after doing proper research. They’re still speculative, but way better than whatever you’re doing with penny stocks.
For the love of God or the universe, whatever you believe in , sell your penny stocks and invest accordingly. With your high-yield savings account already in place, you can focus this account on growth ETFs and index funds instead.
•
•
•
u/hotmoma_donna Feb 12 '26
Buy gold and silver is what I would recommend. Or some ETF's VTI, or maybe VOO
•
u/IditarodDays Feb 12 '26
If you want some real advice:
Don’t touch options Don’t touch pennystocks Don’t touch regular stocks
Invest in ETFs, BONDS, CDs. Don’t make the same mistake as me. You are in the best position for medium risk, high return.
Don’t burn your capital because you wanted a quick buck.
•
u/NandersPvP Feb 12 '26
Advice:
watch people like Humphrey Yang, Graham Stephan, heck, Even Dave Ramsey for some strict principles. But don't entirely follow everything from anyone. Experience is a teacher on its own.
Have an emergency fund that covers a few months of bills or income if you want to be extra safe.
Index funds first, extra or small allocated percentage into single stocks next.
Diversify. Don't do all one into one thing, don't do pump and dumps.
invest in what you understand when you know something that no one else does about the company
Trade with conviction, knowledge and advantage on the market about a company, and research. Buy on your own research and due diligence supported (not started) by others.
•
u/Darth_Gandalf-6969 Feb 12 '26
Max a Roth and your HSA each year, keeping them in index funds, then retire a multi-millionaire in 40 years.
•
u/Sensitive_Frosting35 Feb 12 '26
I have the best advice for you ever! Fund an ETF with 200 per month until you reach age 65. You will be in the top 5% of people your age throughout your entire life and very wealthy when you get ready to retire.

u/goldencityjerusalem Feb 12 '26

18 years old....oh man if I would have done it over it again (I am 40 now) dont finance a car, instead drop that into an index fund. Dont worry about the crashes and money loss. You have YEARRRRSS ahead of you. Get out of the get money fast scheme, its gambling. I would drop in VOO/SCHD/VXUS equally - fast forward 20 years you will thank me. Biggest advice I can give, you dont need much money to be happy, despite media and BS reels/post tell you

•
u/Viewtiful-Derek Feb 13 '26
Learn options on bluechip stocks. Chase stability not volatility. Learn to strategically capture dividends. If you can learn to make more than 5% apr on your investment, you're in a good place and already ahead of most apy on savings accounts, if you can make more than 10% even better. Flashy stock tips and big payoffs are few and far between. Look for a steady grind. Feed your investment like a savings account. Stay disciplined. Don't over leverage.

If i had to give financial investing to myself as a 18 year old. Live your life have fun. DCA 5-10% into the big ETFs like VOO, more when you can afford it. Dont try to get rich quick.
•
u/Careful_Economist352 Feb 13 '26
Its okay you can make that up. I would say GCTS. Not too long until it shows the move. I also mentioned on my post at the dip. Do your own research tho. I'm currently in EONR for swing buy the dip and sell easy10 %. I'm also about the same age as you so this kinda relatable😂 wish you luck!

•
u/XelaXanson Feb 13 '26
Buy as much as you can while everything is on sale. IN GOOD GROWTH companies. Was the best idea I made last February-April during the tariff drama when everyone thought the world was ending!!! Buy when people are fearful, sell when they’re cocky! Also PRECIOUS METALS!
•
•
u/Average_Pelican Feb 13 '26
I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but don’t get into day trading. Just buy solid tech stocks like Apple/Microsoft/Google plus ETFs like SPY and QQQ. If I wouldn’t have sold the tech stocks I had when I was your age I would be rich by now. So, yeah, I guess my biggest piece of advice is DO NOT SELL. That’s why it’s called an investment, cause the RETURNS GROW OVERTIME.

If i was starting out with that amount id be daytrading cifr. Buy in the high 15s and sell at low to mid 17s. Optx is another good one to daytrade, buy high 5s sell mid 6s. Dont get greedy, smart money takes profits.

Focus on college and securing a decent job after graduation. Nowadays it’s not just graduate and walk into a nice office job, especially with AI. You should be researching internships or how to get a job over trading. You can still trade on the side with money you don’t mind losing but just know penny stocks are always a gamble. You’d probably feel better learning to swing trade ETFS like SPY/QQQ if you’re passionate about trading.
But seriously, I’m not trying to knock you I’m just looking out for you. This time is crucial for you to set yourself up for stable income in the future. With stable income and investing, you could generate much safer and probably larger returns than penny stocks.
•
•
u/wteixeira444 Feb 15 '26
I wouldn’t even be worried about investing just yet, square away a decent emergency fund/income source first so you can build wealth responsibly. Once you get there buy up low cost index funds and should be good
•
u/aheadstandard Feb 15 '26
Stop trading penny stocks.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 16 '26
I dont even touch pennystocks, this was just the only page that would let me post it 😭
•
Feb 15 '26
Yeah, stop trading options. They’re designed to take your money just trade the shares. It’ll be slower, but in the end, you won’t have lost all your money.
•
u/AsisiSovai Feb 15 '26
I would recommend you use that money towards a marketable skill or certification. You’ll make more than that amount back in a year as long as you pick the right skill/trade/certification. The stock market is where over 90% of traders go to lose money.

it really is amazing the influx of small accounts on stock subs since the beginning of the year
they keep crying about losing a couple hundred dollars making posts like they are actual huge losses
they will never learn until they lose it all and give up this isnt asking for advice its karma farming "loss" porn
WSB is full of teenagers now with tiny accounts less than the average weekly paycheck like this one

•
u/MediumSinger8088 Feb 19 '26
A lot, but depends on your interests. Invest in yourself first. Get out and live. Experience life. Avoid debt as much as possible. Train your mind and hands - either go very strongly academic with a plan to monetize your degree, or very strong vocational with a plan to monetize that. Or both if you have the bandwidth. But train yourself to gain skills that you can monetize, while also experiencing life and learning to live a reflective life. Also try to find work/life balance. Learning about human relationships is as important (actually more important) than learning about money.

im all in on GCTS and they announced a deal with skylo today that people are sleeping on, IMO buy some GCTS and hold that till next few earnings report, not a financial advisor but, ive done my DD and I'm in, look up the facts to confirm yourself, or find another stock you like, Good luck and god speed bruv.
•
u/ApprehensivePeak6657 Feb 12 '26
GCTS? Why?
•
u/InitialBison8532 Feb 12 '26
52 week low 90 cents, high 2.47
yesterday Skylo announced they are supporting GCTS chip; i found it already posted as pending on the supported devices on Skylo's website and that company is no joke, privately owned, investors such as BMW, SONY, BOEING, and many many more on that project; recently director Shin Hyunsoo bought a whole bunch of shares, had a pump end of January when they delivered the partnership news and now its time to actually report on that news and earning that the company has been waiting forever to produce. They noted they will be shipping the chips as early as mid this year.
no brainer. so many up factors, they were down, now things are looking good - simple as that.
•
u/Chance-Building-4046 Feb 12 '26
Okay Cool thanks Man, Im gonna look into some of this when the market opens tmr. I appreciate it brother
•
u/Gr4n_Autismo Feb 12 '26
This is why you're losing.
•
u/InitialBison8532 Feb 12 '26
Not really when someone says do your own research and go as you please, if someone is spamming rockets or not i get it - but i rarely post and rarely tip off or hold any stocks so he might have got lucky with that comment and i guess only time can tell how the post ages ;) And don't buy GCTS i don't want you winning with me xD
•
u/InitialBison8532 Feb 12 '26
I had a good feeling when i bought Nvidia at 120$ and its half my portfolio 🤣- and ill probably hold that till robots are walking around, i'm having that feeling again with GCTS (some notable gains incoming) xD ; but thats a different game investing in stocks at $100+ (more reliable but less % movements). If you get lucky you find a cheap stock that bumps 1000% and you really get a bang for your buck; but never invest without some research! Use bracket orders and stop losses if you cant afford to lose certain amounts - and trade responsibly my brother! Cheers 🍻
