04:41hrs and I’m loving this!
I work as a medic and my fave detail is when the police are training new bomb squad members so I get to watch them blow shit up. First time, the geek that I am wanted to know the formula for how far back we had to stand based on the amount of explosives and how fast the shock waves travel. They snickered at my naïveté and said to back up a couple more steps. Ok. Looks good. Lemme know if you get hit. Of course I didn’t, but damn that was a super fun way to spend 12hrs in an old gravel quarry on sunny day.

i'm not sure what's so bad about this ? When i think mining the old fashion way, it's going into caves with a pickaxe and a canary, destroying your lungs with underground air and dust, and if you're lucky you catch your canary dying and that's your cue to gtfo because that means there's flammable gas and the slightest spark means you and your mates are gonna get buried alive.
At least with blast mining, you just blow up the ground and then pick it all up to be sifted with big machinery.

Strip mining is way more ecologically and environmentally catastrophic, with much broader health implications. For instance, in traditional mining, the dust is somewhat contained. However with blast mining, the debris is thrown high into the air and the debris cloud can ride the breeze pretty far. Hell, there could be some particulate in your lungs as you type this, just waiting to pop back up in 30 or so years.

Less dangerous for the humans involved for sure, but strip mining is criticized for its environmental impact. As shown in this video it destroys huge swaths of land which means it destroys whatever ecosystem was there.
And all the explosions release massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.edit: transporting the dirt to get to whatever they're mining for produces a lot of CO2. Plus the explosions can poison local water systems with whatever they are mining for and the byproducts of the explosives. All mining is pretty bad for the environment but strip mining is one of the worst forms•

Oops I misremembered. The explosions don't release CO2. But to get to the important stuff they're mining for they have to remove all the overburden, the regular dirt and rocks, that they just blew up. Transporting the overburden is what produces a ton of CO2

I guess that makes sense. But I can hardly believe we can have eco friendly mining operations. What is being typically mined in those videos ? And what is it used for ? Are there alternatives ?

Strip mining is usually used for coal but it's also used for other materials like copper and gold. You're right that eco friendly mining isn't really a thing, all mining is various degrees of bad. The best thing we can do is reduce our reliance on fossil fuels which will reduce the use of all mining

But... We kinda need copper and gold. Those are refined metals used in major amounts in all kinds of electronics.
Coal sucks though. It's 8000 times less efficient than nuclear. And it pollutes infinitely more.

Absolutely, we don't have good alternatives for copper and gold. Even with solar or nuclear power we need batteries. I'm not saying strip mining is purely evil or that we should stop mining completely, but that we should limit both wherever possible particularly in delicate environments. Definitely move away from coal though, we do have better alternatives there

To name just a few methods that would help mitigate the environmental damage:
1. Urban mining using HPMS, Noveon's magnet to magent process, and Cyclic Materials approaches.
2. Re-mine the waste that already exists using methods like AMD, Coal fly ash, Mine tailings and red mud.
3. Extract without blasting using technologies such as EKM, changing from ammonium sulfate to magnesium sulfate as an example of a less damaging chemical, or Ion-absorption.
4. Biological Gathering such as Bioleaching or Phytomining.Of course cleaning up the chain around this mining is also very important but critically, these are the ways that the mining itself as shown in this video can be made significantly less damaging to the environment.
On the slavery side of things, I don't know what country you live in but I would hope one that has signed up for all efforts possible to put a stop to slavery. It won't be an easy job, but it is worth doing. If we can't save both our environment and humanity, I am not sure of the point.
