These two homemade jars of blackberry jam

Post image

I recently made blackberry jam for the first time and while I had bought small weck jars specifically to store it all in, I had some left over and poured it into these empty jars I still had in the cupboard.

I pretty much eyeballed filling these two as it was the last dregs from the pot, but I'm shocked at how perfectly equal the amounts are.

If you had those jars you buy good jam as it is, but yeah you can't beat homemade.

Way too many seeds for me

Nobody asked you...

Same. I’ll press the hot jam through a strainer/sieve to cut the seeds down by half. Some seeds are great, but I don’t enjoy my jam with that much texture in every bite.

My wife used a strawberry jar to make some homemade chili sauce. The best part is that it looks exactly like strawberry jelly, and it's even in the strawberry jar. Can't wait for someone to raid our fridge and be in for a surprise

What's satisfying about this?

The number of seeds in the left jar equals the number in the right jar.

You're now required to pronounce it "blackburry" forever.

How does homemade jam taste compared to original jam that was in those Bonne Maman jars?

u/Mee_Kuh 2d ago

The original jam was not blackberry, either strawberry or raspberry.

And I find enjoyment in making things myself, especially because the blackberries were all from my own garden, and I think gifting this to people has more meaning than a store bought jar. So it's not important to me if this doesn't taste better or the same as the Bonne Maman jam.

Completely agree with everything you said. Making your own jam is so satisfying, and the smell of the kitchen alone could make it worth it.
Bonne Maman is good but far from perfect, I have not yet tasted a homemade one that i didn't like better than store bought. And I love recognizing the own touch of who made the jam by the differences in acidity, texture, and sweetness

I grow raspberries and do the same, but get so sick of seeds because I like my jam thick. If you want to smooth it out or go seedless - oxo food mill with the smallest plate set. Adds some manual labor turning a handle but I can do 3-4 pounds of berries in about 30m.

Unless the OP is blowing their own glass jars then I dare say the vast majority of them come from a factory.

u/Mee_Kuh 2d ago

Yes they are, I keep empty jars for storing all kinds of food stuff and after I had filled all my weck jars I still had jam left so cleaned these up to use the last of the jam.
