When will my payroll update to reflect my Step Increase/Union Contract Increase/Lump Sum Payment/Geriatric Pay/Slug Pay. SAVE THIS LINK.

Literally no one except the 4 or 5 people on one team within OSC know if and when the payments will be posted. The calculations take time, and are checked manually. The people who check the link above will be the first to know!

"But, it should be automated"

Absolutely, ask your legislator to invest in a better payroll system. As it stands the change is made, then they go back in and make adjustments for: Retirements, Promotions, Voluntary Leave without Pay, Involuntary Leave without pay, Voluntary work reduction schedules, New Hiring and any other reason civil service can come up with to mess with it. THEN they recalculate everyone's salary using a different method to make sure the first one was correct and audit both. THEN we get the payment.

"The taxes are extortionate"

Correct. Lump sums are taxed at a higher rate, both federal and state. if our unions and civil service negotiated contracts before they expired we wouldn't be taxed at the higher rate for the back pay. (I THINK it's supposed to even out at the end of the tax year, but I'm not positive of that, someone can weigh in below who knows more. Frankly I understand why people are shocked when they do see it)

KEEP IN MIND: for PEF the last contract was settled on June 2, 2023, Payroll was processed on checks on August 30, 2023.

I (Or another Mod) might pin this post for a bit if enough people ask, the link is valuable and would reduce the number of posts demanding a date for back pay.

Former State Retirement Call Center and Benefit Calculation Agent With Deets

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I see lots of people talking about Retirement here, saying they've heard this rumor or that, they've been hung up on, they're frustrated, an Info Rep ate their puppy, etc. The common thread I'm seeing in these posts is that they're shocked that the unmitigated disaster that is the administration of the Retirement System is not a bigger scandal, more discussed, more public, etc. I would love to hear some stories and, best case scenario, put together some kind of petition. Let's start the conversation.

Advice Wanted Non-Competitive Transfer for Judicial Grades (JG)

Upvotes

As an Analyst within the NYS UCS, those roles are all Non-Competitive. I’m new to the system but what’s the difference between the non and permanent competitive.

I want to transfer into a different unit but idk if I have protections. I also know that there’s no Tests for analyst roles. Should I start applying at my 6 month mark although I’m still on probation or should I wait the year then apply?

I don’t want to stay in the current role that I am in for more the 1 year since Im over qualified and meet the minimum qualifications for higher grades

Currently a JG-21 and trying to find a perfect timeline as to when I should apply for higher grades.

I need advice about a Department of Corrections Office Assistant (keyboarding) job.

Upvotes

I lost my job in June and after lots of applications and interviews I have an offer for an Administrative Assistant position in a health and human services field. While signing employment paperwork for this new job I got a message to schedule an interview for the Office Assistant position. I'm looking for advice, is it worth even pursuing this job? Has anyone worked at this job? What is it like?

The Admin Assistant job comes with pretty good benefits, the commute is 15 minutes, and there is potential, and space, for promotion.

The Office Assistant position has state benefits, union membership (I would never have lost my job in the first place if I'd been in a union), the pay is a little bit more (around $1,000-$2,000 more), commute is 30 minutes. I do have some money in NYS retirement from a previous job, if that context is helpful.

Please comment any thoughts, observations, and advice. Thank you!

Question Am I crazy or am I missing OT on this week’s pay stub?

It was submitted on time and approved, I get that I called in for two days and charged it to my time, but even if that was factored in 208$ is not 7 hours of Overtime? I’ve never really had payroll mess up on me before so I don’t know if I somehow missed something?

Advice Wanted How do transfers work while on probation?

Upvotes

I've been with my agency for 6 months. While my coworkers and supervisor are nice, I really hate the work itself. It's not at all what I had hoped. From the horror stories I see here, I fear moving to a different agency and getting stuck with a crappy supervisor and/or team. But, I also don't want to work in a position I absolutely hate until I retire. My probation is a year long. Can I even transfer? Any advice?

Raise and Probation

Upvotes

Hi!

Likely a basic question, but I wanted to ask. I’m off probation at the end of the month and our raise from CSEA kicks in. Does anyone know how much the raise will change our check, and does coming off of probation change the rate of pay as well?

Thanks!

Has anyone switched offices within NYS Tax and Finance?

Upvotes

I currently work for the New York State Department of Tax and Finance as an auditor, and I have been thinking about trying to switch offices.

I do not have any complaints about my current office or the people I work with. I have just been really itching to move somewhere else and was curious about what the process looks like.

I honestly do not know where to begin. Is this something you bring up with your supervisor or HR, or do you usually have to wait for a position to open at another office and apply for it?

If anyone here has transferred between offices, or knows how the process generally works, I would really appreciate any insight. I am mostly trying to figure out where to start and what I should expect.

Question Suspicious of DOH job listing

Upvotes

Hey there! I'm job searching right now for a state IT role. Today I applied for a backfill position with the DOH. The recruiter reached out to me through Indeed chat and later sent me an email asking for my resume, references and DL copy. I have two questions.

  1. Is it normal for a state office to recruit through a recruiter? I know the DOH can be a bit different with their process, but I've never seen that with any other state position.
  2. Is it normal to provide a recruiter with a DL copy before an initial interview?

Edit: I've decided to rescind my application on this. There's too many red flags. Thanks to those of you that provided me with more information.

Question Health Insurance Q

Upvotes

Not sure this is the right place to ask this, but I’m stumped and hoping folks here can help:

United health care family plan

Kid in college in MA, which forces you to buy the campus health insurance, unless you can provide proof of coverage, which I can get from United Healthcare.

However, the standard proof of coverage letter is not good enough for MA, unless it also states something like “there is national coverage through a national network of providers.” But United Healthcare won’t edit the letter.

How have other people gotten around this? I don’t want to pay twice for coverage.

Thanks for any insight.

Rant Please, For the Love of God, Check Your Camera Before a Teams Meeting

Upvotes

We had a virtual staff meeting recently with about 25 people on it. One employee apparently didn’t realize their camera was on.

About 10 minutes into the meeting, they got up from their desk, walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator and just stood there staring into it for what felt like an eternity.

Then they took out a rotisserie chicken. No plate. No utensils.

They came back to the computer, sat down, and proceeded to eat pieces of the chicken directly off the carcass with their hands while our manager was explaining a new workplace procedure.

At one point the manager asked, “Does anyone have any questions?”

This person — still holding the chicken — UNMUTED and said, “No, I think that all makes sense.”
Then muted themselves and continued eating.
Nobody acknowledged it.

About five minutes later someone finally messaged in the Teams chat:

“Just a reminder that cameras are optional.”

I genuinely don’t know how everyone kept a straight face.

Question Question about CS exam score & chances

Upvotes

I took the office assistant exam recently and scored a 90. I have gotten a few canvass letters and replied, but not feeling too confident, as I heard that there is no chance of getting hired given this score. Is this true?
How long does it usually take to hear back after responding to a canvass letter? Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated!

NYHELPS Minimum Qualification

Upvotes

Does anyone know how strict they are on the substitutions when it comes to a degree substituting for the years of experience? Currently the job that I applied for, if you have a degree in digital marketing, it can substitute for two or four years. But I have a marketing degree. Do you know if they will still accept me, or are they very strict?
