It was supposed to be just a school presentation, but a John Bonham came over the kid, and that was the result 😅

The only comment I wanted to see!

u/pykemann 1h ago

But did you expect this comment? 🙃

Weird Al Gets Whiplashed

https://youtu.be/mVt_1lGTUcg?si=jq9IIJ-2vEg0oCIY

Just saw him last night and he’s been including an edited version of this in his set for a few years. I can’t see any mention of Whiplash without my mind playing his version.

Thanks Al for “ruining” another form of media for me. 😂

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos 1h ago

I’m going next month to Toledo to see him and I can’t fucking wait.

u/pykemann 1h ago

I've caught 20 years of his concerts that have been within an hour of home. Even had a meet & greet once through a friend at a radio station.

I also got my wife hooked as soon as we met over 15 years ago 😄

u/magomich 2h ago

I came looking for this.

u/RagingClue_007 1h ago

Salacious searching strikes again.

u/yborwonka 2h ago

Only came here to see that other people have already said that they came here to see that.

u/XanZibR 1h ago

I came like John Bonham over a kid

To the untrained ear it sounds great. I wonder how a pro drummer would rate without taking this kid’s age into consideration

u/drumbum37 39m ago

I’m a (not pro) drummer and I give it 2 thumbs up. Starts with an idea and builds on it. Throws in a few different dynamics. Adds in some triplets then some nice footwork on the beat. My only knock is that he didn’t toss his sticks into the crowd at the end. Bravo young man.

u/StrobeLightRomance 21m ago

I'm a multi-instrumentalist of three decades (started at about age 11), including drums at a professional level, and this kid is better now than a lot of drummers will ever be as adults.

The biggest thing is the syncopated tom fill hits in between the standard beats that are intentionally just a little off the standard 4/4 measure.

It's very jazz fusion coupled with big band ideas from wayyyyy before this kid's time. Whoever is teaching him and influencing his taste in music is providing a very eclectic palate.

u/vega455 2h ago

The only thing I could think of

u/Outrageous_Act2564 2h ago

Lol. Perfect.

Incredible stuff but his classmates must be so tired of him

u/Best_Sail5160 1h ago

Agreed! We had a kid like this in my high school jazz band. He was awesome the first year when he would have a drum solo in a school concert. His solos would go on for about 3 minutes, would get pretty boring and annoying. Eventually the band got annoyed with his showboating.

u/Wind_Yer_Neck_In 1h ago

This is the problem with drum solos in general. They can be utterly masterful and creative but at the end of the day it's still the drums and nobody wants to hear a drum solo for more than a minute.

u/calmdownmyguy 1h ago

That's almost certainly going to be the best part of any high school jazz band performance

u/PunkandCannonballer 43m ago

You could say that about any solo.

u/MoneyCock 27m ago

No way. A good drum solo gets the people dancing like no other, and the rest of the band gets to rest and recharge.

u/RcNorth 20m ago

Watch the kids in the background, they are definitely tired of his solos.

u/GetchaPullSCFH 20m ago

You clearly havent seen gojira live. Mario Duplantier 😍🥁

Same experience but a Stratocaster and “Eruption.” After about 10 times, I’d just get up and go for a walk outside.

u/sunkissedsoda 47m ago

I remember years ago there was a “Guitar Prodigy” but he only played Eruption (or maybe it was into the fire and flames?), he was like 12 but his dad just had him learn the one song over and over, kid was on Ellen and shit and everyone was all impressed but he fizzled out bc he does not know how to play guitar on a fundamental level

Oh boo hoo. This is awesome. This kid is seriously talented. Best to teach kids how to kick back and enjoy instead of hating

u/red58010 1h ago

The kid can do that another time. It's also important to be mindful of your relationship with your bandmates. The kid can absolutely find another stage to show off with the kind of talent he has. It doesn't need to be this one. He'll be talented but extremely lonely if he takes every opportunity to show off. An adult will need to talk to him about how what he did was amazing but there is a time and place for everything. He could've showed off just a little bit without making the whole thing about himself.

u/tragedyisland28 1h ago

The thing is:

from this clip alone, we don’t know WHY he’s performing this solo

An adult MAY have encouraged him to do this.

u/jcg878 49m ago

It was clearly according to plan. Those other kids were expecting it.

u/Conninxloo 1h ago

What? He most likely had a specific spot in the concert program to do a solo performance (as would have others). Of course he plays his practiced piece there.

u/RudePCsb 1h ago

There are kids moving to the beat and smiling. You can see some taping their feet

u/thefeltmonkey 51m ago

You're taking the thread title at face value. It's obviously a scheduled part of the show. 😂

Kids going places. I drum myself and this kid is very talented. Dudes just up there having a good time while leaving mouths on the floor.

10/10 no notes. Kids got serious talent.

u/CynthiaG92615 1h ago

I agree. The kid is feeling it!

Downstairs neighbour at 1:16 AM

u/DigNitty 2h ago

My neighbor knocked on my door at 320am last night.

Beyond rude.

Luckily I was awake playing my drums.

u/Hopey-1-kinobi 2h ago

I know how you feel. My neighbour is always up banging on the wall at all hours. Sometimes I can barely hear myself drill!

I'm getting more Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich vibes.

Exactly my thought! Krupa then a smidge of Bonham in the middle, the Krupa/Rich at the end.

Not done with the video yet.
There’d better be an insane amount of clapping at the end of it. SPOILER: Some cheering.

Next up: Bobby Snickerford on his RECORDER!

u/MadcatFK1017 2h ago

Absolutely stunning, not even just for his age, just wonderfully done

u/NativeMasshole 2h ago

Now play the rest of Moby Dick

u/eternal_casserole 2h ago

I was really hoping the rest of the orchestra was going to come in with that, but in the typical style of an eighth grade orchestra.

u/damian1369 1h ago

Same here! "And now, here's Jimmy Burbacker with his rendition of Twinkle twinkle little star on a triangle!"

other kids: "**** this showoff"

u/Kingkongcrapper 1h ago

The guy in front looks like he found the drummer to a band he just decided to create. The girls in the back are looking like they’re deciding who’s going to talk to him first.

u/graemehammondjr 2h ago

u/Large_Debt6660 1h ago

Those other kids have no idea how cool this kid is.

u/somebob 1h ago

They had a camera set up and focused directly on the drummer, so I’m pretty sure this was pre-planned not some wild improv moment the kid just broke out. And it looks like my old band classroom.

So idk why you’re implying the spirit of drummers-past possessed this kid and he did a solo out of nowhere

u/JohnLuckPikard 1h ago

Kid to the right could not be any less impressed.

That dude is sick of this kid's shit.🤣

u/tiredofnamechoosing 1h ago

I find it interesting, the number of comments saying this kid is show-boating/soloing for too long. If I were the music teacher/conductor for this group of kids and one of them had this level of skill, they’d be getting a solo spot every single performance. He’s fantastic.

u/PNWest01 1h ago

With that kind of talent and skill, you let that kid showboat all he wants. He’s just doing what God put him on this earth to do. I’m always in awe of drummers, lol, how in tf do you get your four limbs to do completely different shit? Amazing.

u/See5harp 1h ago

u/Commercial_Ad_3687 2h ago

u/yojoewaddayaknow 2h ago

Looks like a jazz band UIL competition. This kid just brought home the soloist award and outstanding performance for his age group. I’d place money on it.
